The British government announced on Wednesday that it had accepted that Bosnian Serb war criminal Radovan Karadzic, convicted of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide, be transferred to the United Kingdom to serve out the remainder of his sentence in one of its prisons..

Bosnian Serb political leader Karadzic, 75, was sentenced to 40 years in prison at first instance for genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. This sentence was however extended to life imprisonment on appeal in 2019.

“He is one of the few people who have been found guilty of genocide. He was responsible for the massacre of men, women and children in the Srebrenica genocide and helped carry out the siege of Sarajevo with his ruthless attacks on civilians,” said British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab.. “The United Kingdom has accepted that (…) he be transferred to a British prison to serve the rest of his sentence,” said a statement from the British Foreign Ministry..

“We should take pride in the fact that, from Britain's support for his arrest, to the prison cell he now faces, the UK has supported the pursuit of justice for these heinous crimes for 30 years,” Raab added.
