López Miras wins the elections in Murcia and ensures 32 years of PP government
The Popular Party has once again won the elections in the Region of Murcia and will add 32 years at the helm of the government. Fernando López Miras will revalidate his presidency and remains close to an absolute majority with 21 deputies. Despite winning five more seats than in 2019, he will need the support of Vox to govern. Abascal's party is, together with the popular one, the one that grows the most in representation, achieving nine seats in the Regional Assembly.
López Miras has regained hegemony after the PSOE surpassed him in votes in May 2019 and needed a pact with Cs to remain in the Palacio de San Estaban. Just a few months later, Vox was the party with the most votes in the general elections in Murcia. However, engulfing the Cs voter has given him the recovery of leadership on the right, which has become evident in a distance of twelve seats that give López Miras a cushion to negotiate the formation of a government.
“I have traveled 4,000 kilometers asking for a necessary majority for a strong government without ties. Murcians have given it to us. We have obtained the best result since 2011. The map of the Region has been dyed blue,” said the Murcian leader. “It hasn't been an easy four years. First the Dana of 2019, then the two worst years of the last century, those of the pandemic and then a motion of censure, but I think it was all worth it,” he said.
“Today Murcia has said no to Pedro Sánchez and the sanchista policies. Today Nuñez Feijóo's path to La Moncloa begins and we will continue lowering taxes, defending the Tagus-Segura and the infrastructures we need,” he warned, cheered on by party militants in a central hotel in the capital.
Setback of the PSOE
The PSOE is the party that has suffered a heavy defeat. José Vélez, the umpteenth socialist leader trying to overthrow the PP, seen how not only have they not been able to overshadow the PP, but have also lost four seats. United We Can resist with two deputies, which will not allow it to have a parliamentary group, and the surprise was given for a good part of the night by the Regional Citizen Movement, the formation that was born in Cartagena and that seemed to enter the Assembly with a seat and , first time regional representation, in addition to its eight councilors in Cartagena. However, at the end of the count, that seat was number 13 for the PSOE.
If López Miras has touched the majority, the one who has achieved it is José Ballesta, who will once again be mayor of Murcia with an absolute majority after the motion of no confidence in 2021 in the Murcian capital unleashed the electoral wave that has returned territorial power to the PP. It has captured the entire Cs vote and does not even need the six Vox councillors, which has doubled its representation, while the PSOE has lost an act and Podemos is left without representation. The PP, in addition, will be able to revalidate the mayoralty of Cartagena that has been in the hands of Noelia Arroyo for the last two years and recover that of Lorca for Fulgencio Gil by agreeing with Vox.
