The PP agrees in the Balearic Islands to govern alone: it gives Vox the Presidency of Parliament, Spanish in the classrooms and without talking about "gender violence"

SPAIN / By Carmen Gomaro

The PP and Vox have reached an agreement to unblock the next Balearic government. The popular formation chaired by Margalida Prohens has ceded the presidency of the autonomous Parliament to Vox and, late this Monday afternoon, has signed a programmatic preliminary agreement with some political axes that it promises to follow.

It is a framework document signed by both political forces that includes some of the issues included on Vox's agenda, already included in the Valencian agreement, although, in the case of the Balearic Islands, with a more elaborate development and with nuances typical of the program of the pp.

With this agreement, the way is paved for the PP to govern the archipelago alone and Prohens is sworn in at the end of the month with the support of the eight deputies that Abascal's party obtained in the Islands.

With these concessions, and in the absence of materialization, the first step is taken to rule out a coalition government in the Islands after the elections of May 28, in which the PP was the force with the most votes with a large difference , however remaining four seats short of an absolute majority.

The agreement signed between PP and Vox is divided into five blocks. The first, referring to freedom, commits both formations to “consolidate an educational model free of ideological indoctrination” and to guarantee the “free choice of the first language for their children” to parents in the Balearic Islands.. This has been the main claim of Vox, which nevertheless intends to extend it to all education, a point on which both formations differ.

The agreement also dedicates a section to the “protection of women”, especially for “guarded minors”. The first point promises to “guarantee all assistance, support and fight against violence against women” but also asks to “identify the repeated profiles of the aggressors”, in the Vox line of pointing out immigrant groups. And it is proclaimed that “victims of domestic violence will be supported and assisted”, “especially those suffered by women, children and the elderly”. At no time is there talk of “gender violence”, the usual terminology that Vox denies, and that “intra-family violence” that Abascal has always wielded is cited.

Shortly after the signing in Palma, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, president of the PP, justified in Ser: “Macho violence is obvious and should not attract attention that it is not in the texts. There are sentences that accredit homicides due to sexist violence. I read the text of the Balearic Islands and a paragraph says 'to eradicate macho discourses…'».

Among another series of theoretical declarations of intent, the document, signed by the parliamentary spokesmen of both parties, Sebastiá Sagreras (PP) and Idoia Ribas (Vox), also includes a point to promote the coordination of the State security forces and bodies to combat illegal immigration and the organized mafias that promote it, stressing that the Balearic Islands have become a hot spot on the Mediterranean migratory routes.

Negotiations had begun to unblock this morning, when Vox announced that its leader in the Balearic Islands, Jorge Campos, will go as an autonomous candidate for Congress in the next general elections. Campos was the main defender of Vox entering the regional government and his leap into national politics has paved the way for the PP to negotiate an agreement in the Islands.

This Tuesday the Balearic Parliament is constituted and the two parties will make this agreement visible with the election of the president of Vox. The next appointment will be the investiture of Prohens, which will be put to a vote next week.
