Vara leaves it up in the air if he will appear again before the scene of an electoral repetition

SPAIN / By Cruz Ramiro

The acting president of the Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, continues to raise the question of whether he will be a candidate again in the foreseeable scenario of electoral repetition. When he announced this Wednesday his intention to stand for the investiture, even without sufficient votes for the majority, after the clash between PP and Vox, he responded on this possibility that “I have not thought about it”, despite the lack of replacement. This Thursday, during an interview on Onda Cero, he left it on the air again, assuring that “I don't know”. “I have to speak with ours, with my family, wife and children, I was already in retirement,” he added to focus his message on the “frivolity” and “seriousness” of repeating the elections due to the cost and political and economic instability.

In Ferraz they leave no doubt that he is the main asset of the party in this territory. However, in line with his speech, they are now focused on emphasizing that “he won the elections and he is the president that Extremadura needs given the show that PP and Vox are giving”. The baron from Extremadura, who is part of the PSOE executive, has held two personal meetings in recent days with the leader of the Socialists and Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez.

Vara himself, who has asked the PP to abstain to let the most voted list govern, “to see if instead of preaching he practices it”, he wants to send the message that in his case he does not seek “personal interests”, but institutional ones. Faced with those who accuse of turning Extremadura into a “laboratory” and looking for “only armchairs”, it is presented as an option for the unblocking that avoids an electoral repetition, as the candidate of the popular, María Guardiola, already assumed..

His chances are practically nil as he does not add enough with Podemos, but along the way he is discharging responsibilities in PP and Vox, as a pre-campaign. If he is confirmed as a candidate if the elections are repeated, a phase in which the Extremadura socialists are not now to portray the right-wing bloc, his letter of introduction is clear. Despite not having options in advance, Vara has collected the argument of the PP from the most voted list to defend his decision.

A way of trying to portray the leader of the PP after she forcefully distanced herself from Vox's postulates, establishing herself as a dam against her denialist demands regarding gender violence or sexual diversity, as she has been denouncing.

investiture schedule

The acting president has reproached the PP and Vox for their “chess game” in which “we Extremadura put the pawns”. “They talk about everything except the problems of the people,” he lamented to warn that a repeat election would cost around 2.5 million euros to public coffers and would endanger the execution of the European funds from the recovery plan.

The investiture will take place within a maximum period of one month from the constitution of the Parliament of Extremadura last Tuesday. It is in the hands of the president of the Table, which has fallen into the hands of the PSOE due to the clash between PP and Vox, to set the date within the deadlines set by the autonomy statute. For Vara, “the clock has to start working”, also taking into account the possibility of “a complicated summer of fires, and the Government has to be putting out fires, it has to be there”.
