Osasuna will play the next Conference League
Osasuna will be able to play the next Conference League. This has been confirmed by the “rojillo” club in a statement, confirming the acceptance of its appeal by the TAS.
“In view of the new evidence provided by the club in defense of its participation in the competition, UEFA has concluded that Osasuna was a victim of the events that occurred almost a decade ago and has valued the initiative carried out by the institution to clarify them.. Consequently, UEFA considers Osasuna suitable to participate in this edition of the European competition,” the club's statement read..
Therefore, Osasuna “will be present on August 7 in the draw for the Conference League playoff that will be held on August 24 and 31”.
The Navarrese club was sentenced by UEFA not to play this competition, despite having qualified, due to the match-fixing scandal in which it was involved in the 2013/2014 season. According to the sentence, Osasuna paid Betis a total of 400,000 euros so that they could beat Valladolid and avoid being relegated to the Second Division.
However, this decision by UEFA and the TAS, “puts an end, both in the ordinary courts and in sports justice, to the fight that the Navarrese entity has maintained during the last two months in defense of its rights and those of its partners”.
Due to presenting this appeal, “UEFA has opened a disciplinary procedure against Osasuna, which will not prevent its participation in the Conference League. The club will accept the penalty imposed by UEFA, before which it will not appeal.”.
