China accuses the US and NATO of being the biggest threat to world peace

China has accused the United States and NATO of being “the greatest source of risk and instability” for “international peace and security”, in response to the communiqué of the recent summit of the Atlantic Alliance held in Vilnius.

The spokesman for the Ministry of National Defense Tan Kefei made these statements on Thursday when receiving questions about the document issued by NATO, which mentions China as a “systemic challenge” and calls for greater cooperation with Asian partners, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Tan has claimed that NATO is known for having the world's largest nuclear arsenal and for pursuing a first-use policy for nuclear weapons.

According to the spokesman, in recent years, the United States has “promoted nuclear weapons sharing” under the pretext of “alleged security threats.”

Tan has said that China firmly follows a nuclear self-defense strategy and is always committed to a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons.

“We urge NATO to take practical steps to lessen the role of nuclear weapons in national and collective security policies and effectively maintain global strategic stability,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesman has also criticized that NATO has “interfered in China's internal affairs” by “questioning its sovereignty and territorial integrity” and “defaming its peaceful development.”

“China poses no threat to any country, but we will not allow anyone to undermine our core interests,” Tan warned.

NATO leaders this month approved a declaration in which they assured that “China's declared ambitions and coercive policies challenge our interests, our security and our values.”

They added that “China's malicious hybrid and cyber operations and its confrontational rhetoric and disinformation target allies and harm Alliance security.”

The agency has urged Beijing to condemn Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine or to refrain from “supporting in any way the Russian war effort.”
