Borrell assures that the EU will support Ukraine until Putin decides to stop the war, "which will not be soon"
The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, stated on Sunday that the EU will continue to support Ukraine until Russian President Vladimir Putin decides to end the war. Borrell emphasized that this is unlikely to happen soon and may depend on the outcome of the upcoming elections in the United States. His remarks were made during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Riyadh, which commenced on Sunday and will conclude on Monday. Borrell reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to assisting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, regardless of the financial investment this entails.
Borrell stated, “We will continue to support the people in Ukraine. There are those who ask how much money we will spend on the war. We are committed to supporting Ukraine until Putin decides to stop the war, but I don’t anticipate that happening in the near future,” said the EU’s top representative in Security Policy.
During his speech, Borrell highlighted that “Putin initiated the war” and indicated that the Russian president may wait for the US elections to determine the future or the possibility of resolving the conflict, which began over two years ago.
Expressing concern about the prolonged duration of the Russia-Ukraine war, the EU’s High Representative emphasized the importance of preventing a similar situation in the Middle East and referred to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip as another example where the only viable solution is sharing the territory.
