Spain suspends recycling: only four out of every 10 waste has a second life

Of the 467 kilograms of garbage that each Spaniard generates annually, only 38.6% acquires a second life. The rest, more than 13 and a half million tons of waste per year, goes directly to the incinerator or, mostly, to the landfill.. Spain is at the bottom of the large European countries in terms of recycling of urban solid waste (MSW): 10 points below the average of the twenty-seven and far from the 69% of waste that is reused in Germany, 58% of Netherlands or 52% of Italy.

According to a report published this Wednesday by the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie) together with the BBVA Foundation, Spain now recycles 7% more than five years ago and 32% more than 20 years ago, but it is still not close to the figures of urban waste recovery in which European countries have been involved for more than a decade. Eurostat data reveal that Spain's MSW recycling rate is even lower than what the EU average recorded 10 years ago, when four out of every 10 waste was already recovered.

Regarding total waste – MSW and waste from industrial and healthcare activities – the recycling rate rises to 48% in Spain, but is still ten percentage points lower than the average recorded in the European Union.

Thus, domestic waste is what hinders recycling the most in Spain. Only 7% of waste generated in homes is recycled, while three out of four end up in landfills and the remaining 18% are burned. Health waste, by its nature, is also at the bottom of recycling – only 13% can be recovered – and, despite being the material that concentrates environmental efforts, only two out of every three plastics acquire a second life.. On the opposite side, waste paper and cardboard, wood and glass have the highest recycling rates, while the textile industry improves in this aspect and three out of every four garments are already recovered.

To the queue in circularity

The implementation of the circular economy in Spain is going backwards. If in 2017 8.8% of products were made with recycled waste, in 2022 this proportion was 7.1%. Once again, Spain is far from the European average circularity rate – which is 11.5% – and from countries such as France and Italy in which almost one in five new products is obtained from recycled waste.

This is, in the opinion of the author of the report, Eva Benages, the main alarm that Spain faces.. “Competition for the extraction of raw materials is increasing, with higher and more volatile prices, and it is not in Spain's interest to continue being so dependent on the outside world,” he explained in statements to this newspaper, arguing that betting on the circular economy could be a good alternative to obtain raw materials without leaving the country. In addition to the environmental benefits, Benages has insisted that circularity represents significant economic savings, as it replaces the purchase of natural resources – increasingly limited – that are needed in production processes.

Money could be behind the failure of the implementation of the circular economy in Spain. Private investment allocated to activities related to waste reuse in the country exceeded 6.1 billion euros in 2021, which is equivalent to 0.5% of GDP, when the European Union average is 0.8%.. However, Spain is on par with its counterparts in terms of patents related to the circular economy, with more than 20 new ideas registered each year..

Furthermore, activities related to recycling generate thousands of jobs in Spain every year.. In 2021, 2.3% of those employed were employed in this sector, a proportion higher than the European average and representing more than 454,000 people, the majority of them working on R&D&I initiatives.. Thus, these activities represented a contribution to the Spanish GDP of 1.9%, almost 23,000 million euros..

The four keys to choosing the best account without commissions

Uncomfortable, elevated, difficult to justify and understand, annoyingly recurring…. There are several characteristics that are associated with bank account commissions.. Above all, from the customer's perspective. Instead, they are a powerful source of income for banks.. In fact, that is the reason why it seems difficult for them to disappear.

However, the digitalization of the financial sector has democratized products and their conditions, increasing competition and supply.. So “today there are various and multiple accounts without commissions and with other attractive characteristics, even though these types of charges have not completely disappeared,” they point out from the comparator Helpmycash.

The fact is that faced with an offer of commission-free accounts as wide as the current one, you have to look at another series of aspects when deciding.. Specifically, in four differentiating factors that will be the final weight that tips the scales.

1. Online operations

The online world has not only brought a more global and open market in terms of products and services.. It has also required, for the good of all, an adaptation to the digital environment, both from banks and clients and, as an example, the birth and good positioning worldwide of various entities that stand out for their digital operations.. The app is enough for the client to carry out any management or operation.

In this sense, Revolut stands out and its popular Revolut Account, specially designed for those seeking versatility and efficiency in their transactions.. It offers an online banking experience without borders, since it allows you to withdraw money anywhere in the world without costs and with the best exchange rate for payments in other currencies. In addition, it offers points and discount programs, accounts with returns of up to 3.1% and investment possibilities with bitcoins and stocks as other incentives.

2. Gifts, returns and discounts

Precisely, like Revolut, other entities and banks, in addition to eliminating commissions, seek to attract new customers with another classic formula: gifts and remunerations.. A historically proven commercial hook that today can also be the determining factor.

And if we talk about remunerating the client, the commission-free account that must be mentioned is the Sabadell Online Account.. Just as there are entities that give away products or discounts, this account is a direct way to make savings profitable with an attractive interest of 6% TIN the first three months and 2% TIN (3% APR) afterwards.. But not only does it offer profitability, it also rewards you with a 3% refund on electricity and gas bills, along with free debit and credit cards.

3. The accessibility of the requirements

At the same time, not every client wants access to everything, nor do all banks want any client.. Therefore, a third factor to consider when choosing a commission-free account is the rest of the conditions and the limits it sets.. That is, if it is more or less flexible in the requirements. In any case, in this aspect and again due to the democratization of the market, there are options for everyone, which do not require any type of connection with the entity.

Without going any further, the Welcome EVO Smart Account is an accessible and generous alternative in terms of profitability for a wide range of profiles.. With an attractive 2.85% APR and the possibility of opening a deposit at the same time with identical interest, it has a policy without commissions and without conditions. In other words, it is not necessary to direct the payroll or receipts to hire it.

4. Cards and ATMs available

Finally, although there is talk and more and more value is given to online operations, digital payments, etc., for many it continues to be vital to have a wide ATM network, as well as cards with a reduced cost. Banks also know this and that is why the options for this type of profile are still very present today.

A good example of this is the Santander Online Account, which stands out in terms of comfort and accessibility.. In addition to having no commissions, it gives away up to 400 gross euros for direct debiting the payroll or pension. But, above all, it is ideal for those who use the card regularly, since it offers the debit card completely free. And, obviously, being one of the largest banks on the planet, the availability of 30,000 free ATMs around the world makes it a perfect alternative for those who prioritize this fourth factor.

'Brusselsland': the theme park of spies, drug traffickers, jihadists and dinosaurs

When they started digging they knew something would appear. It is not unusual for archaeological remains to be found in works on the Metro, vestiges of forgotten times.. Brussels is not Rome, but not so long ago on the ground floor of parking lot 58, a few hundred meters from the City Hall, a pier appeared (ships once reached the center) dating back to the 14th century, and objects and food remains that allowed Learn a little more about the way of life of the inhabitants of the area at that time.

That is why the interruption of work when giant bones appeared was not a surprise.. That these were mammoths, on the other hand, was funny. First, because this species of fossil elephant lived in regions with a very cold climate and today they would still be quite in their element.. Second, because, according to the dictionary, “he had his skin covered with long, rough hair, and his incisors were curved and developed,” like several of my neighbors.. And thirdly, because if one followed the news it was impossible not to reach the same conclusion: the most probable cause of the extinction of the mammoths here was not climate change, but the abuses for not understanding the rules of priority to the right and the shootings of criminal gangs.

Last week was a spectacle, in its most terrifying sense. Here we always joke that if one had to stay home scared by every news of a jihadist with a knife or a terrorist with a Kalashnikov, we would not see the light of the sun.. Well, the thing about the sun is a saying. But in a few days, the Police confirmed five shootings, one dead, several injured and some seizures of automatic weapons at checkpoints.. Everyone, by the way, in St. Gilles and its surroundings, a neighborhood with an unjustified good reputation.

The situation in Belgium and the Netherlands got out of hand a long time ago, as in Sweden, but for strange reasons they have not fully penetrated the collective imagination.. On the one hand, drug, weapons and human traffickers. In the Netherlands there were almost 400 attacks with explosives last year, and Antwerp, its port and surrounding area, is a regular scene of bombs, settling of scores, shootings, murders and destruction. But it's as if we didn't find out here. Things from another planet that do not suit us. Until they reach the front yard, not even the back yard.

On the other, the jihadists. All major attacks in Europe have happened in one way or another through Molenbeek, through Brussels. Without the Islamic State in the headlines every week, we go through a lot, but the same guys who killed (us) five years ago are still here, doing their thing, waiting. The imam who this week went to preach peace at the Brussels Parliament with a surah against the Jews is a good reminder.

The embassies are considering what to do, whether to alert travelers or let them go.. If there is a real risk for tourists or is it only between criminals with some collateral damage. Brussels has never been a safe city, especially for women. But between the settling of accounts, the expansion of crack and the deterioration of the stations, things are getting more and more dodgy. Brusselsland, world capital and theme park of spies, drug traffickers, jihadists and dinosaurs.

Egypt erects a walled enclosure on the border with Gaza in the face of the Israeli military advance

Egypt is building a walled buffer zone near its border with the Gaza Strip in the face of an imminent Israeli ground offensive in the south of the enclave, which could lead to a forced exodus of thousands of Palestinians.. An investigation by the Sinai Human Rights Foundation revealed that excavating machines had been leveling the land for days and raising a wall seven meters high.. Satellite images of the area, verified by US agencies, confirmed that construction began in early February.

The walled enclosure could extend from Gaza's border with Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea, with a total of twenty square kilometers of fortified land and could accommodate around 100,000 people.. The construction has raised suspicions that Egypt would be preparing to receive a possible influx of Palestinian refugees from Gaza, given the advance of Israeli troops in the border city of Rafah, where one and a half million Gazans are displaced.. Cairo fears that thousands of Palestinians will be pushed into its territory in an attempt to flee the conflict and has deployed dozens of tanks on its border in recent weeks..

Following the failure of talks mediated by the US and Arab countries to achieve a truce, Israel has warned Hamas that if it does not release all the hostages before March 10, it will launch an offensive in Rafah.. Israeli authorities have reiterated that they have a plan to resettle the 1.5 million civilians refugees in Rafah, although they have not given details of its logistics.. “Israel has no intention of evacuating Palestinian civilians to Egypt,” said Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant last Friday.. “We respect and value our peace agreement with Egypt, which is a cornerstone of stability in the region, as well as an important partner”.

For his part, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry warned on Sunday that the ground offensive in Rafah is a “direct threat to Egypt's national security” and denied that Cairo is building a refuge for Palestinians in the Sinai.. “We have been dealing with maintaining our border…maintaining road networks. “I think there have been hasty conclusions about what constitutes these activities,” he said.. Shoukry added that while Egypt would treat civilians “humanely”, the displacement of Palestinians to the Sinai remained “unacceptable.”. An Egyptian military source told the Middle East Eye newspaper that while the construction of the security zone is true, the project seeks to “create a centralized area to limit the infiltration of militants into the Sinai.”. The source noted that Egypt already set up a similar security zone in 2014 during a conflict with militant groups in northern Sinai.

Displaced Palestinians in Rafah have been suffering from a lack of food, water, medicine and shelter for months. The UN high commissioner for refugees warned that a forced exodus to Egypt would be “a disaster for Egypt and a disaster for the future of peace.”

Lavrov's mini-tour to the US 'backyard' in the midst of a storm

“Moscow and Havana are united in their desire to move towards the construction of a more just multipolar world order,” announced the Russian Foreign Ministry hours before its head, Sergei Lavrov, began his ninth visit to the Caribbean island in two decades.. A mini-tour that continues this Tuesday in Caracas and will continue on Wednesday in Brazil to attend the G-20 Summit, in the midst of the storm unleashed by the suspicious death in prison of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and when the second year of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, also plans to influence the geostrategic board of the Americas, who will meet tomorrow in Brazil with Lula da Silva and will later travel to Argentina to meet with its president, Javier Milei..

With all the traditional pageantry, which includes the floral offering at the monument to José Martí in the Plaza de la Revolución, Lavrov met with the Cuban authorities to show the rest of the planet that his alliances reach only 160 kilometers from US territory.. “Forever friendship and commitment,” stressed Granma, official organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC)..

After the meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez, Vladimir Putin's Foreign Minister praised his “most important collaborator” in Latin America, with whom, he insisted, he shares the vision of a new “fairer” world order and democratic”. The Cuban revolution has celebrated 65 years in power this January 1, with the PCC becoming the “governing body of society”.

“The US and Western countries use blackmail and threats to impose their hegemony. “Cuba knows first-hand the impact of US sanctions,” criticized Lavrov, who assured that the time has come to unite to eradicate “neocolonial practices.”. Moscow has had the invaluable media support of the three continental dictatorships (Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua) to spread its political propaganda around the invasion of Ukraine throughout the continent..

“The main objective of this tour is to strengthen Moscow's ties with its autocratic allies and its populist partners.. Send a message to what the Russians call the backyard (the famous backyard of the US, coined in its day to describe Latin America by the Monroe doctrine). “You are still in Ukraine and we are in Cuba and Venezuela, in the heart of the West,” historian Armando Chaguaceda revealed to EL MUNDO..

A second objective, at a practical level, has to do with “commercial security with its illiberal allies and with its commercial partners, which are democracies with populist governments, like Lula, who has refused to condemn Russia and who has relativized everything, including the death of Navalny,” Chaguaceda described to this newspaper.

Very little is known about how the Russian plan, agreed with Havana, has progressed to design the new economic model of the island, mired in a serious social and economic crisis.. In principle, it sought to imitate the authoritarian state capitalism currently in force in Russia..

A “stand by”, as economist Pavel Vidal, former official of the Central Bank of Cuba, points out, a project that is not moving forward but that has not been officially discarded..

Very little is also known about the secret agreements between governments that have brought Cuban mercenaries to the battlefield.. There has also been no progress following the request of Alexei Zhuravlev, vice president of the Defense Committee of the Russian Duma, to install missile systems and supply submarines to the “friends” of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.. “Russian hypersonic missiles will reach the US faster than the more vulnerable subsonic missiles from the US side,” the leader surprised.

Office daycare, teleworking and online psychologist: Glovo searches for his new boss in Spain on LinkedIn

Discounts at the gym, access to an online mental health program and benefits in case of paternity leave with daycare in the office are some of the benefits that Glovo promises for its new boss in Spain, according to an unconventional offer on LinkedIn for a position of such high hierarchy.

“All positions are published on our website and on LinkedIn. In addition to considering internal candidates and recommendations from the company's own employees, we want anyone who wants to join the project to have the possibility of participating in the process for any position,” says a Glovo spokesperson.

The company has already received 70 applications for the position which has a generous social benefits package, which also includes a lot of shares, private health insurance, two days a week of teleworking and three weeks from anywhere in the world and a monthly credit allocation in Glovo to place your orders.

The offer, however, does not include the salary that the person in charge of this position in the home delivery company will receive, an amount that varies greatly depending on the profile in this type of positions.

The chosen one will replace Xavier Virgili Grau at the head of Glovo's daily operations in Spain, who will join another of the Barcelona-based unicorns, Factorial, as vice president at the end of the month.

The manager who joins the company must have ten or more years of experience in “agile” business environments such as startups, investment banking, technology and consulting firms.. This will have more than 200 employees under his command and will directly supervise areas ranging from day-to-day operations to the development of new business opportunities, the consolidation of the quick commerce area and the creation of a long-term strategy for the company.

Likewise, he will also be the main interlocutor of the company with its clients and the regulator and the Government in a scenario marked by the conflict opened by its distributors and the labor nature or not of them with the Ministry of Labor and its rivals, who accuse to the company from unfair competition.

Delicate situation

The company's commitment to continue keeping its riders as self-employed after the publication of the homonymous law has resulted in numerous million-dollar fines, although the majority are already prior to the legislation being approved as the majority of courts consider that the relationship of Glovo with its delivery drivers is of a work nature.

With expected losses of 209 million euros in 2023, the group managed to have the execution of several million-dollar fines suspended due to its delicate economic situation.. More recently, another front has been opened, such as the possible use by illegal immigrants of delivery driver accounts.

The Civil Guard investigates a large network of tax fraud in the sale of fuel in Spain

Tax fraud in the sale of hydrocarbons has skyrocketed in Spain in recent months. In part, because fraudsters are taking advantage to squeeze their operations before a new control mechanism that the Government approved at the end of 2023 comes into force on March 28, which involves limiting the intermediaries who can participate in the fuel marketing. During this kind of moratorium, the markets have detected a significant increase in fuel offers, mainly diesel, at abnormally low prices.. The rebound has been so striking that it has already caught the attention of the Civil Guard.

For some time now, the Armed Institute has been following the trail of the convoluted corporate architecture that would be serving as a parapet for a large plot of tax fraud in the country.. The intricate nature of these networks of instrumental companies and front men complicates the investigations of an investigation that could last more than a year.. For now, sources from the Civil Guard and the Tax Agency agree in conversation with EL MUNDO that one of the companies on the radar of the ongoing investigation is Biomar Oil.

It is a company under the umbrella of the TCM Investors holding company dedicated to the purchase and sale of wholesale fuel at an international level.. “In very few years we have managed to position ourselves in the markets, rigorously complying with all the requirements established in the national and international standards in the sector,” says the holding company's website about Biomar, which places the company as one of the top ten. Spanish market operators.

One of the reasons why Biomar Oil is in the crosshairs of the financial authorities is its meteoric increase in income. Between 2021 and 2022, its turnover went from 25 million euros to more than 1,000 million, as El Confidencial reported.. Sources from the trading field point out that, given the volume of refined fuel that the company has acquired in the last year in the markets, everything indicates that it would have doubled its sales again in 2023.. This would mean an increase in its turnover of almost 8,000% in just two years.

Biomar, which according to the commercial registry has a total of 16 employees (data from 2022), justified in its latest report the improvement in its figures in a change of ownership of the company, which made it go from being “a company that sells at a local level, supplying mainly the Group's Service Station network, to become one of the operators with the highest sales volume in the country”. This medium has tried to contact Biomar, without success.

The corporate structure of the group is not simple. TCM Investors defines itself as the head of the holding company that includes Biomar Oil SL. and three other companies in the hydrocarbon field, but there is no corporate relationship between all of them, nor information about their shareholders.. Yes they have the same administrators. TCM and Biomar also shared their headquarters in the Cuzco building, at 141 Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, but a month ago the latter moved its registered office to Barcelona.

In 2023, Biomar's parent company bought two companies that manage the fuel storage terminals at the ports of Malaga and Cartagena.. Both, like their previous owner, Buran Energy, were on the Treasury's list of defaulters, with a debt of 17 million euros.. Buran requested its dissolution after transferring its subsidiaries.

According to official Treasury data, the tax fraud hole in the sale of hydrocarbons was 700 million euros in 2022. To this we must add the evasion of compensation that operators who do not include in their product the volume of biofuel set in Europe, which represents a loss of another 95 million to public coffers, has to pay.

Sources close to the Tax Agency (AEAT) assure that fraud has reached “disproportionate dimensions” in a few years and explain that these cases are “closely linked to organized VAT fraud schemes, from the so-called trout (fictitious) companies”, to missing traders and shell companies”.

Fraudulent operators generally pretend to sell hydrocarbons to companies created ad hoc, without VAT charges.. They then resell the product to final distributors (gas stations) at a very low price, even at a loss, something they can afford because they have not borne the VAT on the purchase, nor do they pay the VAT that affects the sale, because they disappear from the map without carrying out the settlement. According to the figures used in the sector, about 1,000 gas stations, of the 12,000 in Spain, would be selling below the cost price..

“We are being very harsh for two reasons. Fraud in numbers represents 6% of all tax revenue from hydrocarbons. In addition, these frauds represent a violation of the free competition that prevails in the EU internal market, as they are harmonized taxes at the community level, trying to expel small operators from the market, which results in harm to the free setting of prices,” explains another source from the Tax Administration.

The PP demands that Sánchez "remove" the Amnesty Law "after the result" in Galicia

“The people of Galicia are relieved, as are the majority of Spaniards, because the independence movement does not have power in the regional government,” said Carmen Fúnez, the Deputy Secretary General of Organization of the PP. This statement came after the PP’s victory in Galicia was confirmed.

Fúnez emphasized that the Galicians have chosen coexistence and moderation over divisive and confrontational policies. She called for Pedro Sánchez, the leader of the Socialist Party, to withdraw the amnesty bill after their defeat at the polls. “The Socialist Party should withdraw the amnesty law that is causing so much harm to Spain and the Spanish people,” she said.

Fúnez also commented on the message sent by Galicia’s election results. She noted that Sánchez’s government now only has nine deputies, and that what Spaniards expect from politics is moderation, dialogue, coexistence, and serious policies. She urged the government to focus on the day-to-day lives of Spaniards rather than creating stories and narratives.

In addition, Fúnez highlighted the victory of Alberto Núñez Feijóo and his leadership within the PP. She praised the party’s commitment to building bridges instead of walls, in contrast to the divisive amnesty bill promoted by other political parties.

Fúnez also criticized Vox, stating that they have not been effective in their political actions. She argued that the PP is the most effective instrument against the independence movement and the only alternative to Sánchez’s government. She called for both Vox and the PSOE to engage in serious debates within their own organizations.

Jácome leads DO to "put a pike in Flanders" snatching votes from the left and right

Test passed, halfway. Ourensana Democracy will have representation in the Galician Parliament, but Rueda will not need its support to govern. This Sunday, Gonzalo Pérez Jácome's party achieved its first regional deputy in history, although his vote will not decide the direction of the Xunta government.. They enter, but do not determine.

After having starred in an electoral campaign full of eccentricities, with an astronaut costume and cinematic allusions included, Jácome closed the election night toasting with a Ribeiro from Orense. To those who were left out of parliament he responded with a “carallo”, while he did not hesitate to resort to a Galician proverb to respond to Rueda's accusations: “Vai falar de merda o que más cagado es” (“he's going to talk about shit the one who is most screwed”).

“We will make a pact with the devil if he brings heaven to Orense”. Jácome has not tired of repeating it, but in the end there will be no “devil” who needs his pact. The mayor of Orense promised that they would facilitate the government of Galicia “even to the worst” if it guaranteed them investments for the province, if it “showed them the ropes”, but finally the absolute majority of the PP has taken away their dream of being “the key to the Xunta”.

Galician Elections 2024
Look for

Far from showing any disappointment and still hoarse from the Carnival hangover, Jácome has used irony to refer to it: “We aspired to be a key and we hired impressive catering but, since we are not, we are looking to see who will pay for it.”. The controversial mayor celebrated this Sunday in a hotel in Orense that DO. “has put a stake in Flanders” on 18-F, pointing out that “all progress begins with a first step” and trusting that his candidacy will attract more voters as the years go by.

During the campaign, Jácome has come to compare himself with “Basques and Catalans” for wanting the DO vote. served as a “bargaining currency” to increase the budget of Orense, although he has clarified that, unlike that of the other nationalists, their cause “is fair” because they are “the poorest in Galicia.”. He pigeonholed the BNG as a “Soviet party” and Pontón called it “radical,” although he fired shots everywhere, assuring that any of the leaders had “monstrous things.”

The party seat will be occupied by Armando Ojea who, despite having remained in the shadow of Jácome throughout the campaign, also hides a peculiar trajectory. Graduated in Physics, he toured Galician festivals as a keyboard player for the group Pachán and boasts of being multilingual: he speaks twelve languages, including Wolof, the ethnic language of Senegal and Gambia.

Galician Elections 2024

Ourensana Democracy has gathered almost 15,000 votes in this Sunday's elections, taken from both the right and the left, and Jácome has become big in the capital, where he has even managed to surpass the PSOE. However, the regionalist party has lost more than three thousand voters compared to the 2023 municipal elections, in which in the city of Orense alone 18,450 voters chose their ballot.

At the regional level, with 98.5% counted, Democracia Ourensana has obtained 1% of the votes, behind Sumar's 1.9% and Vox's 2.2%. However, by running only in the province of Orense, where he has garnered 8.8% of the vote, Jácome has managed to translate those ballots into the first seat for a regionalist party in the Galician parliament.

Alfonso Rueda, the triumph of normality of the biker baron who could handle all "the pressures"

– Alfonso Rueda is known for his calm demeanor, regardless of political turmoil or media games.
– Despite facing negative information during the campaign, Rueda maintained his composure and remained steadfast as the PPdeG’s anchor of calmness.
– His team praised him for his unwavering calmness amidst pressure and messages of all kinds, both from within his party and externally.
– Rueda’s ability to avoid distractions and remain focused on his goals has been compared to Don Tancredo’s evasiveness of thieves.
– Born in Pontevedra in 1968, Rueda started as Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s loyal number two but gradually developed his own distinct profile, steering clear of controversies and understanding that his political success depended on the support of Galicians.
– Rueda’s strategy has been to build upon the existing momentum and leverage the strong “electoral machinery” of the PPdeG without making drastic changes.
– Although he initially had reservations about taking over as president of the Xunta de Galicia, his resounding victory in the polls has prompted expectations of him imprinting his own style and gradually implementing changes.
– On a personal level, Rueda is an avid biker and cyclist. He embraces Salvador Dalí’s philosophy of being modified by everything but remaining unchanged.
– This personal philosophy has become known as the “Rueda style,” which entails staying true to one’s pre-presidential behaviors and continuing to do what one did before holding office.
– Rueda played a key role in pushing Feijóo to focus on bullrings as a campaign stronghold, particularly in Pontevedra.
– In addition to his close friendship with Mariano Rajoy, Rueda shares a strong bond with the mayors he worked with during his tenure as a local secretary, especially José Manuel Cores Tourís of Cambados and César Mera of A Cañiza.
– Rueda honed his political skills at the local level, gaining experience as a Local Administration Official and secretary of Cervantes, as well as serving as the intervening secretary of the Commonwealth of A Paradanta.
– His first significant role in the regional administration was as the head of the cabinet of the Ministry of Justice, Interior, and Labor Relations. He later became the director-general of Local Administration of the Xunta de Galicia before being elected as the general secretary of the Popular Party of Galicia in 2006.
– Rueda entered the Galician Parliament in 2009 after running as a candidate for the province of Pontevedra in the regional elections. In the same year, he was appointed Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, and Justice.
– He continued his tenure in the regional government, renewing his position as the head of the same department and eventually being named regional vice president in 2012.
– On May 14, 2022, Rueda assumed office as the president of the Xunta de Galicia.
– Rueda’s extensive experience in the Xunta has given him a deep understanding of how the regional administration operates, making him an expert in public administration according to the PP. His knowledge of the workings of the Xunta is unparalleled.
– With another four years in office, Rueda has the opportunity to further specialize and deepen his understanding of regional governance.
