From Taylor Swift to the Moon: only the 1969 moon landing was seen more than the Super Bowl in the history of American television

The NFL always manages to overcome obstacles and find new opportunities for success. Despite challenges such as the retirement of Tom Brady, controversies involving franchise owners, racist emails from coaches, and the controversial treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the NFL continues to thrive. It has even managed to capitalize on the “Swift effect,” referring to the positive impact of Taylor Swift’s presence. League commissioner Roger Goodell acknowledged the blessing that Swift brings to the NFL, and the league was quick to ride the wave of popularity that follows her.

The Super Bowl, which saw the Kansas City Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers in an exciting overtime match (25-22), attracted an estimated audience of 120 million viewers. This makes it the most watched Super Bowl ever, surpassing the previous record set by the Chiefs’ victory over Philadelphia the previous year with an audience of 115.1 million. Such a milestone goes beyond the realm of sports and compares only to significant historical events like the moon landing in 1969, which drew 150 million viewers. Football has become an integral part of American culture.

However, the Super Bowl is not just about the sport itself. The NFL understands the value of entertainment and spectacle. The game between the Chiefs and the 49ers provided all the excitement, unexpected turns, and heroic moments that could easily fit into a Hollywood script. The Chiefs’ quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, displayed his magic on the field, leading a remarkable comeback and securing his team’s victory. With his talent and potential, Mahomes has a long and promising career ahead of him.

Yet, the Super Bowl showcased more than just athletic prowess. Taylor Swift, accompanied by her boyfriend Travis Kelce, Kansas City’s second-biggest star, watched the game from a box seat. The NFL took advantage of the presence of these stars, documenting their every move and sharing it with the audience. Swift engaged with the crowd by participating in a beer-chugging competition and gracefully responding to the boos she received. Meanwhile, Kelce faced his own drama on the field, initially expressing frustration towards his coach but ultimately delivering an outstanding performance. The image of Swift and Kelce sharing a happy kiss on the grass captured the world’s attention, and the NFL seized the opportunity to further engage its massive audience.

In the end, the NFL, Patrick Mahomes, and Taylor Swift emerged as winners. The league’s ability to adapt, capitalize on opportunities, and merge sports with entertainment solidifies its position as a powerhouse in the American landscape.

Kroos' "head", the doubts about his future and the whistles in Arabia: "They are confirmation that I did the right thing"

Toni Kroos has been the standout figure in Leipzig ahead of the first leg of the Champions League round of 16. However, the lead-up to the match was not without incident. The Real Madrid team bus was involved in a minor collision with a car on its way from Erfurt airport to Leipzig. Thankfully, no one was injured, and the only casualty was the mirror on the car belonging to a local resident who got distracted by the sight of the Madrid expedition and accidentally collided with the bus. Both vehicles continued on their journey without stopping.

According to Bild, “On the A4 motorway, between Eichelborn and Nohra, a white Toyota collided with the Real Madrid team bus. The car driver failed to see the bus while changing lanes, resulting in a broken exterior mirror. The Toyota Avensis sustained damages totaling around 3,000 euros. The extent of damage to the Real bus is still uncertain. Fortunately, after a brief pause, everyone involved continued their journey unharmed,” reported the German newspaper.

As for Kroos, the German midfielder who had refrained from participating in press conferences all season, decided to step forward on home soil while the German national team awaits his return for the Euro Cup (he retired in July 2021). Meanwhile, Real Madrid fans remain in suspense regarding his contract renewal. At 34 years old, his current contract expires in June, and he openly admitted that he hasn’t made a decision about his future. “I always tell the truth, and the truth is I don’t know. I’m contemplating it and haven’t made any decisions yet,” he confessed in the press room.

“It depends on many factors, such as how I feel, my personal plans… I’ve always said that I want to finish my career at a very high level. We had the same discussion a year ago… I’m enjoying the moment, and things are going so well that I have a bit more time. I want to make the right decision,” he added.

When asked about the German national team, Kroos acknowledged that “there is a possibility, and we’ll see what happens in the end, just like with the renewal. At the moment, I don’t know.” Laughing, he concluded, “My mind surprises me more than my body. I started at this professional level at Bayern when I was very young, and I thought I would last 15 years. But my mind surprises me more than my body. I have few physical problems; it’s more mental. But now, it’s all good.”

Finally, he addressed the boos he received from the Saudi audience during the Spanish Super Cup, stating, “For me, the whistles have been confirmation that I made the right decision.”

Oier Lazkano, the 'Wild Colt', exhibits his brutal power in the classic sea of olive trees

The Majestic Colt of the Spanish platoon showcases its might amidst the sea of ancient olive trees. Oier Lazkano (Movistar), the reigning Spanish road champion, dethrones Tadej Pogacar in the Jaén Paraíso Interior race, a test that has earned a prominent place on the international calendar due to its captivating route featuring challenging gravel sections, known as the dreaded sterrato. The sensational cyclist from Vitoria claims the coveted victory and the golden olive.

Lazkano, a towering figure of about 1.90 meters with muscular legs, engages in a fierce battle against a platoon consisting of illustrious contenders. The 24-year-old from Vitoria initiates a breakaway 90 kilometers away from the finish line, a daring move that perseveres until the race concludes in Úbeda. This triumph adds to the young prodigy’s impressive record, having secured the Spanish long-distance road championship and a stage win in the Vuelta a Burgos last year. In 2022, Lazkano also triumphed in a stage of the Tour of Wallonia and attained second place in the Spanish time trial championship for the past two editions.

On this day, Lazkano claims the spotlight as the highly anticipated season premiere unfolds for two rising Spanish gems. Juan Ayuso and Carlos Rodríguez, both aiming for definitive consolidation in the esteemed ranks of the UCI ranking, embark on their respective journeys in an intriguing setting unfamiliar to them, captivating both the spectators and fellow riders. Despite being a relatively new addition to the cycling calendar, with only three editions thus far, the Jaén classic proudly boasts a lineage of champion riders. Prior to Lazkano, Tadej Pogacar and Alexey Lutsenko had showcased their superiority in this event.

The curtain rises on the new cycling season with an exquisite event featuring renowned cyclists such as the phenomenal Wout van Aert, the two-time runner-up Tim Wellens, the Vuelta a España winner Sepp Kuss, and former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski.

The 158-kilometer route, originally planned from Baeza to Úbeda, undergoes modifications due to recent rainfall. Four of the eight gravel sections are removed due to muddy conditions that hinder the progress of the riders. However, this alteration does little to dampen the spectacle of a race that boasts captivating elements, including challenging climbs, thrilling descents, treacherous potholes, and steep slopes that allow the most skillful riders to shine. Oier Lakcano (Movistar), Igor Arrieta (UAE), Jefferson Cepeda (Caja Rural), and Nicolas Prodhomme (Ag2R) detach themselves from the peloton with over 90 kilometers remaining in the race.

With 50 kilometers remaining, the race shatters when Van Aert endures a mechanical breakdown, prompting Carlos Rodríguez’s Ineos team to lead the chase and reduce the gap with the escapees, who possess a three-minute advantage. Van Aert exerts immense effort to rejoin the main group but ultimately fails.

Lazkano, donning his Spanish champion jersey, unleashes his power on the formidable inclines. His surging pace fractures the small group of escapees, and only Prodhomme manages to maintain the Spaniard’s intensity. Meanwhile, the UAE team intensifies their pace to prevent Van Aert from bridging the gap. A nerve-racking day unfolds for the Belgian, who succumbs to misfortune amidst the sea of olive trees. Ayuso, ever-present at the forefront, acts as a loyal support for Wellens.

Lazkano cements his victory by asserting his dominance in the final 16 kilometers, particularly in the last stretch of dirt known as Virgen de la Salud. In response to a counterattack by Prodhomme, the Spaniard executes a splendid acceleration, leaving his opponents behind. He manages to maintain his lead despite the valiant efforts of the Frenchman Bastien Tronchon (second), the Slovenian Jan Tratnik (third), Kuss, and Wellens. All hail the triumphant Wild Colt.

When asked about his feelings, Lazkano admits, “Fatigued. The race was fragmented into several groups, with splits in the peloton. It was a grueling battle throughout the day. Nevertheless, I am satisfied. This is my first victory of the year, and winning is always gratifying. As I mentioned after my victory in Burgos last year, winning in Spain while wearing the champion’s jersey holds a special significance.” These were the words of the Movistar rider before ascending the podium.

“I am immensely proud of the months of hard work, and I am delighted that it has borne fruit. During the final 15 kilometers, when I was riding solo, there wasn’t much room for contemplation. At 190 heartbeats, it becomes impossible to think clearly; it’s pure agony. Someday, I hope to achieve an easier victory (smiles), but winning is never simple,” concludes the victorious golden olive.

The abusive bishop who dirtyes and complicates the first visit of a Pope to Belgium in 30 years

In Tremelo, a municipality in Flemish Brabant, they have been yearning for a visit from the Pope for 30 years. It is a quaint town, with a population of less than 15,000 and lacking any significant landmarks. However, Father Damien, a martyr of compassion who dedicated his life to caring for lepers in Hawaii until his untimely death due to infection in 1989, was born there. He was later canonized in 2009. In 1994, there was hope that Pope John Paul II would make a stop in Tremelo during his official visit to Belgium, only to be dashed when he suffered a broken femur. The disappointment was further compounded in 1995 when the planned route excluded Brussels, leaving the inhabitants of Tremelo in a state of great dismay, a disappointment they have yet to fully recover from. Consequently, upon learning that Pope Bergoglio, also known as Pope Francis, intends to visit again, the Mayor and the people of Tremelo were galvanized into action to ensure Tremelo becomes a significant stop on this momentous journey.

Unpleasantly, the upcoming trip has become a major subject of discussion in Belgium. His Holiness was invited by the royal family during an audience at the Vatican and also by the rectors, as one of the highlights will be the celebration of the 600th anniversary of the Catholic University of Leuven. Additionally, the strong relationships that the Argentine Jesuit has cultivated over time with colleagues in both Flanders and Wallonia have contributed to the invitation. Belgium holds a special place in Pope Francis’ heart.

However, the pervasive issue overshadowing the visit is the rampant sexual abuse of hundreds of children. A documentary titled “Godvergeten” (Forsaken by the Hand of God) aired in September and stirred up a storm that still rages. The series sheds light on the long history of abuses and massive cover-ups, prompting a parliamentary inquiry and raids. It has also sparked calls for the Belgian federal authorities to cease the payment of salaries to religious ministers, which includes not only priests and deacons, but also lay individuals appointed by bishops.

Above all, the series has resurrected one of the most painful and perplexing cases; that of Bishop Roger Vangheluwe from Bruges. In 2010, he was ousted from his position after admitting to sexually abusing his nephew and subsequently, other nephews. Despite repeated pleas from authorities to the Vatican, urging the removal of Vangheluwe’s title and the revocation of his right to celebrate Mass, no action has been taken. Even Prime Minister Alexander de Croo, after a recent meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio, reiterated the importance of stripping Vangheluwe of his title and highlighting the significance for the victims. The glaring silence and complicity within the walls of Rome have become noticeable. When Pope Francis first appeared in St. Peter’s Square after his election, he was accompanied by the now-deceased Belgian Cardinal Godfried Danneels, who was known to be close to him. In an audio recording that has surfaced, Danneels can be heard pressuring the abused young man relentlessly to refrain from accusing his uncle. During a recent appearance in Parliament, the secretary of the Episcopal Conference, who also advocates for stricter measures, emphasized the necessity for clarity on this matter, stating that it would be challenging for Pope Francis to have a peaceful visit to Belgium without addressing the issue and meeting with abuse survivors.

The 87-year-old prelate has been secluded in a French community for the past three decades and has faced mounting pressure to resign, in hopes of bringing a resolution to the crisis and facilitating healing. However, it seems that time has caught up with him, as apologies alone hold little value if actions do not follow suit.

Tusk: "The EU must be prepared to defend its own borders. Trump's words have been a cold shower for everyone"

The concern over the potential return of former President Donald Trump to power in the US and the implications it may have for NATO and European security has sparked a repositioning of power centers within the European Union. This shift has been particularly noticeable since the pro-European Donald Tusk assumed power in Poland, leading to a belief within the EU that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security even while maintaining its membership in NATO.

A significant development in this regard was the recent meeting near Paris between the foreign ministers of Poland, France, and Germany. This meeting symbolized the revitalization of the Weimar triangle, a platform for political cooperation between these three nations that had fallen dormant in recent years. The discussions held during this meeting, as well as Tusk’s separate meetings with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris and Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin, have paved the way for increased cooperation and potential reforms within the EU.

One of the major areas of concern addressed during these discussions was the lack of coordination and dispersal of the European arms industry, resulting in inefficiencies and gaps in defense capabilities. The leaders of Germany, France, and Poland expressed a shared objective of enhancing cooperation among European companies and establishing a common defense policy that does not compete with NATO. They emphasized the importance of NATO and the principle of collective defense, while also recognizing the need for Europe to bolster its own security.

The EU faces significant challenges, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, the potential interference of Russia in European elections, the uncertainty surrounding US aid, and the possibility of Donald Trump returning to power. As a result, there is a growing awareness among EU member states that the Union must be capable of ensuring its own security. However, this does not mean abandoning NATO or embracing Trump’s mercantilist approach.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier described Trump’s remarks as irresponsible and playing into Russia’s hands. Poland, in particular, expressed concern over Trump’s comments due to its reliance on US military support as a deterrent against Russian aggression. Tusk stressed the need for Europe to become a safe continent, with strong countries like France and Poland capable of defending their borders and collaborating with allies.

Macron recognized the key role played by France and Poland in European security and defense, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine. He expressed the EU’s determination to support Ukraine and highlighted the importance of developing the EU’s own defense industry. German officials also reaffirmed their commitment to NATO and transatlantic cooperation, despite considering Trump’s comments.

While NATO does not require its members to pay bills, it does expect them to invest a certain percentage of their GDP in defense. Poland has consistently met this target, and Germany has announced plans to increase its military spending to reach the 2% goal. France has already reached this level of defense expenditure.

Two Israeli-Argentines are rescued in an Israeli operation in Rafah

Israel has rescued Luis Har (70) and Fernando Simon Marman (60) in an operation by its special forces in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip, which led to an exchange of fire with members of the armed wing of Hamas and a massive airstrike with dozens of Palestinians killed. The Islamist group denounces “the new massacre of the occupier” in an action that could be a turning point in the course of the war and the negotiation for the truce.

The two Israeli-Argentines were kidnapped in the Nir Yithzak kibbutz in the jihadist attack on October 7. 24 hours before the rescue operation carried out this morning by the Army, the internal secret service (Shin Bet) and the anti-terrorist unit of the Police (Yamam), Clara Marman had expressed to EL MUNDO her hope of soon being reunited with her partner (Luis) and her brother (Fernando) after she herself was released on November 28 along with her sister and niece after 53 days in captivity.

“On the morning of Saturday, October 7, my sister Gabriela and her daughter Mia, my brother Fernando and my partner were at my house in Kibbutz Nir Yithzak spending the weekend.. The terrorists shot, entered the house through the windows and brutally kidnapped us in the shelter room.. We were all together there and also in the Gaza Strip,” Clara told us in an interview in Tel Aviv without wanting to give details about the place of captivity (“to take care of Luis and Fernando”), limiting herself to admitting that they suffered “a lot of suffering and a great psychological terror”.

Clara Marman could not imagine that hours later she would see them again at the Tel Hashomer Hospital, near Tel Aviv, after an Israeli rescue operation in Rafah.. It is the most densely populated area in the Gaza Strip with around 1.3 million inhabitants, of which one million are displaced from their homes in the north and center of the coastal enclave as a result of the massive military offensive.

The Israeli intelligence services had long known the location of Har and Marman in Rafah and were waiting for the moment to be able to surprise Hamas.. And they did it after reaching their building, placing an explosive in the door and completing the rescue.

“At 1:49 in the morning the special forces broke into a building in the heart of Rafah. Luis and Fernando were being held by armed terrorists on the second floor. A harsh armed confrontation began until the agents managed to get them out of there under fire,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari announced this morning.. In the exchange of fire, the soldiers killed the three Hamas troops in the house while the Air Force carried out a massive attack on the area during their departure to the helicopter that was waiting to take them back to Israel after 129 days.

Relatively good condition

The two Israeli-Argentinians, who arrived at the hospital in relatively good condition although “very thin, weak and pale,” said that they were in the custody of a family in Rafah.. “When we told the terrorists that we were Argentine, they asked us if we were Jewish.”. And so several times. There we had a feeling of horror and fear of being attacked by terrorists, civilians or bombed by the Israeli Army, but it helped us to be all together,” Clara Marman told us after arriving from Madrid where she met, along with other relatives of kidnapped, with King Felipe VI, President Pedro Sánchez and the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. “They received us very well,” he recalls.. The office of Argentine President Javier Milei has thanked Israel on the X network “for having successfully completed the rescue of the Argentines.”

“It has been a very complex operation,” added Hagari, who sent a message: “The 134 hostages who are still being held must know that we are determined to return you home.”. At least 31 of them have died. This is the second rescue after that of soldier Oriti Megidish (19) at the end of October coinciding with the start of the ground incursion. On other occasions, the operation was canceled or failed dramatically, such as when soldiers mistakenly killed three Israelis who had miraculously managed to escape.

Asked about the death of dozens of Palestinians in Rafah, Hagari responded that the Army “attacked Hamas targets in the Rafah area such as command and operational rooms of their battalions to allow our forces to leave the place.”. “Many terrorists died apart from the terrorists killed at the rescue site.”

The Gaza Health Ministry indicated that Israeli attacks killed 67 Palestinians last night, although the number may increase with rescue efforts in the ruins in Rafah.. “The death of more than 100 martyrs in the new massacre is the continuation of the genocidal war and the forced displacement attempts that are being waged against our Palestinian people,” Hamas denounces about an attack that lasted an hour and hit a dozen houses. and two mosques in Shabura district. On the other hand, its armed wing reported that three Israeli hostages died after succumbing to injuries allegedly caused by recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza.

According to health authorities under Hamas control, 28,340 Palestinians have died in the Israeli offensive launched in response to the Hamas attack on October 7 that left 1,200 dead and more than 240 kidnapped in southern Israel.. Likewise, 229 soldiers have been killed in Israel's largest ground incursion since the 1980s in Lebanon.

After praising the rescue operation, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu noted that “only the continuation of military pressure, until complete victory, will result in the release of all our hostages.”

Har and Marman's rescue occurs in a very important place and time. Rafah is the center of attention and concern of the international community due to the possibility that Israel will launch a ground incursion in the coming weeks into what it considers the last bastion of Hamas after Khan Younis.

Netanyahu assures that it is “necessary to achieve the objective of ending Hamas and avoiding another 7-0” adding that in the face of the incursion in Rafah he will guarantee “safe passage” for the inhabitants so as not to be in the combat zones.. Last night, US President Joe Biden reminded him that the ground offensive “should not be carried out without a credible and achievable plan to ensure security and support for the more than one million people taking refuge there”. The UN has warned of the disastrous consequences that an operation of this type can cause in such a populated area with little chance of finding, once again, a safe place after four hellish months.

Timing is also important.. The US, Egypt and Qatar will try this week in Cairo to achieve significant progress in the negotiation to achieve a ceasefire and the release of the hostages in Gaza in an exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The goal of mediation is to achieve a truce before Ramadan, which would also avoid a ground operation in Rafah.

The prosecutor of the Court who tries to protect Puigdemont hopes that García Ortiz sends him to another destination

The prosecutor of the National Court in charge of the Democratic Tsunami case, Miguel Ángel Carballo, aspires to be appointed new chief prosecutor of Ciudad Real. This prosecutor, with conservative sensibilities (he is a member of the majority Association of Prosecutors), worked in the aforementioned department for 15 years.

According to tax sources informing EL MUNDO, Carballo has requested the provincial leadership of Ciudad Real, which has recently been put up for competition.. In recent weeks, Carballo's name has appeared in all the media for being the prosecutor who does not see evidence of the commission of terrorism crimes in the Tsunami procedure, which currently keeps the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont, in the hands of the Supreme Court.

In this context, Carballo has harshly attacked the head of the Central Court of Instruction number 6 of the National Court, Manuel García-Castellón, whom he has accused of prolonging the procedure in an “artificial” way, of being “incongruent” and of ” lack of arguments” for wanting to investigate Puigdemont and the ERC leader Marta Rovira for terrorism.

The attacks by prosecutor Miguel Ángel Carballo against García-Castellón have been so loud that the instructor did not hesitate to respond in one of his last orders in the Democratic Tsunami case, emphasizing that, in our Rule of Law, the body that promotes the action of Justice is the Public Prosecutor's Office: “Given the resources for reform of the Public Prosecutor's Office, this instructor understands that we must reflect on the singular fact of having to insist before the body whose mission is to promote the action of justice in defense of legality, on the forcefulness, quantity and clarity of the evidence that allows the initial classification for the crime of terrorism to be sustained. The seriousness of the crimes that are being seen at this moment, the clear impact that these had on the general interests and essential economic structures of the State, the specific damages that were caused to those harmed and the serious injuries suffered by the victims of the crime. , not only demand clarification by promoting the action of justice, but also demand, in defense of legality, that the investigation and prosecution be carried out by the judicial body that holds the objective and functional competence for it, which in this case would be of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court, as indicated in the Reasoned Exposition that is intended to be deactivated”.

The vehemence with which this veteran prosecutor has defended that terrorism crimes cannot be attributed in the Tsunami case, nor to Puigdemont himself, has been related by different colleagues from the Court with Miguel Ángel Carballo's interest in being appointed the next prosecutor. head of Ciudad Real, an appointment that depends on the attorney general, Álvaro García Ortiz. Prosecutors from the Supreme Court consulted by this newspaper also criticize that “he has given himself to the government cause” in exchange for a new professional destination.. They all emphasize that the vehemence with which Carballo has defended that terrorism cannot be seen in the serious altercations caused by the Tsunami action in 2019 is unusual in the way this conservative prosecutor works.

However, sources close to Miguel Ángel Carballo maintain that the possible appointment to the leadership of Ciudad Real would be a logical step in his career – since it is an opportunity to return to the Prosecutor's Office where he started – and that his opinion on the Tsunami case was known to everyone, including Judge García-Castellón, without having received any order from his superiors to alter it.

Faced with the strong criticism received, this prosecutor clings to the fact that he himself is the one who has requested up to 27 years in prison for some of the members of the CDR, a procedure that is also susceptible to being amnestied with the proposed law being processed by the Congress of the Deputies.

Miguel Ángel Carballo was appointed number two of the Prosecutor's Office of the National Court – that is, designated lieutenant prosecutor – at the proposal of the former State Attorney General, the late José Manuel Maza. When García Ortiz had it in his power to revalidate him in office, he did not do so and appointed a person he completely trusted to the position, Marta Durántez, prosecutor of the Progressive Union of Prosecutors.. “You shouldn't be very grateful that they didn't renew it,” say tax sources.

Meanwhile, the position of the Prosecutor's Office in the Tsunami summary – which was initiated for terrorism, hence the jurisdiction of the National Court – has been varying over the years and, above all, in recent months.. Last summer, before the general elections that left the political future of Pedro Sánchez in the hands of Puigdemont, the Audiencia Prosecutor's Office, with the approval of the chief prosecutor Jesús Alonso, issued a report in which it defended that there were “a multitude of indications of “unquestionable solidity” regarding the commission of a crime of terrorism by the Tsunami platform. That report was signed by prosecutor Joaquín González-Herrero, replacing Carballo, who was on vacation at that time.

Three days after the general elections, and after the García-Castellón court refused to annul the document signed by González-Herrero as requested by Jesús Alonso, the chief prosecutor of the Court issued a second report in which he said that the classification for terrorism was due “to an erroneous transfer carried out by this Ministry”. In addition, Alonso added on July 26 that the Public Prosecutor's Office was not “really in a position, in view of the state of the procedure, to advance its criteria in an exhaustive and conclusive manner on whether or not the aforementioned inhibition is appropriate” to the courts of Barcelona for being the facts constituting possible crimes of public disorder.

Now, temporarily coinciding with the fact that the future of this Government depends on amnestying the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont, “those conditions” have been clarified and the Prosecutor's Office has been tirelessly asking since last November 10 to refer the case to Catalonia. In contrast, 12 Supreme Court prosecutors considered last week that there are signs of terrorism in Tsunami and 11 of them pointed directly to the probable participation of the Junts leader.

The miracle of Ivory Coast: conquer the Africa Cup with an emergency coach

Ivory Coast, in a tournament filled with setbacks and uncertainties, managed to overcome all the challenges to secure a comeback victory in the final against Nigeria (1-2), earning them their third African Cup title in history.

Despite a poor performance in the group stage, Ivory Coast managed to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. After dismissing coach Jean Louis Gasset, Emerse Fae took charge and led the team on a miraculous journey through each round, culminating in a victory against the tournament favorites in the final.

The team, led by the brilliant Simon Adingra with his two assists, along with the impressive performances of former Barcelona player Frank Kessie and Borussia Dortmund attacker Sebastian Haller, secured their fifth final appearance. Ivory Coast had previously won the title in 1992 and 2015, but had also suffered defeats in 2006 and 2012. With this victory, they now share the same number of trophies as Nigeria, who also has three in their history.

Ivory Coast demonstrated their superiority over their opponent, who had only conceded two goals throughout the tournament. Although Nigeria took the lead just before half-time, with a header from captain William Troost-Ekong, Ivory Coast equalized in the 60th minute through a corner headed in by Frank Kessie.

The winning goal came in the final minutes, just nine minutes before the end of regular time, when Ivory Coast was preparing for extra time. It was a well-executed play from the left, with another precise pass from Simon Adingra into the heart of the box, where Haller anticipated the defenders and netted the ball.

This victory is particularly significant for Haller, who made a remarkable comeback after overcoming testicular cancer and became the hero of Ivory Coast’s triumphant campaign. The team’s achievement also marks the first time a host nation has won the African Cup title since Egypt in 2006.

A chaotic Barça is only capable of drawing with Granada

Barça suffered yet another disappointing setback at Montjuïc, but this time they couldn’t even blame it on their own performance. Not even Lamine Yamal’s exceptional talent could prevent the loss. Granada took advantage of the returned Ter Stegen’s unfortunate luck to score again away from home, after their only previous away point against bottom team Almería. This result gives hope to the Nasrid team, while Barcelona fans can only cut one point from Girona, who are still firmly in second place. [3-3: Match narration and statistics]

The first half for Barça brought mixed emotions. On one hand, they took the lead through Lamine Yamal, capitalizing on their first clear chance at goal before the 15-minute mark. However, a few minutes before halftime, Granada managed to equalize with a powerful shot from Richard that even Ter Stegen’s touch couldn’t stop from finding the net.

This goal was perhaps the clearest opportunity for Granada, who struggled to exploit the defensive vulnerabilities that Barcelona often displays. In attack, Xavi’s team found it difficult to counter the physicality of the visitors. Despite this, they had a great chance to extend their lead, with a promising combination between Lamine Yamal, Pedri, and Gündogan, but Lewandowski’s final shot was blocked by a defender. As usual, the missed opportunity quickly turned into an equalizer.

The second half started favorably for Granada. Cancelo proved to be the weak link in Barcelona’s defense, with Pellistri exploiting his lack of speed, but Ter Stegen made a good save. However, on the second attempt, Pellistri found the back of the net. Instead of crumbling, Barça quickly equalized with a well-placed shot from Lewandowski, assisted by Gündogan. Unfortunately, misfortune struck again as Ter Stegen saved Ricard’s shot, but the rebound hit the post and then bounced off his hand, eventually going into the goal.

Barça struggled to recover from this blow, but Lamine revived them with a brilliant long-range strike, making it 3-3. Ter Stegen had to work hard to prevent a fourth goal shortly after. In the final stretch of the game, Barcelona relentlessly attacked Granada’s defense, but despite their efforts, they couldn’t find the winning goal.

The shocking story of LF, a 16-year-old goalkeeper who received a beating in a youth game in El Prat: "If he doesn't protect himself, they will break his head"

«I didn't do anything different. The game ended, I went to the center of the field, shook hands with the other team's players and was going to the locker room when they kicked me from behind at knee level. I hadn't noticed anything before. I fell to the ground. And several of them started kicking me all over my body. By instinct I covered my head with my hands, but I stopped understanding what was happening, I opened my eyes and saw everything black. Until a few minutes later I couldn't move. “My coach and my parents came to help me, but he was stunned for a while.”

LF, 16 years old, plays one more league, a league like any other, Group 27 of the Second Youth Division of Catalonia. He is the goalkeeper of the current leader, Colegio Sagrat Cor de Sarrià in Barcelona, and one of the teams with the fewest goals scored. Until January 27, he simply had fun playing soccer. He enjoyed his sport “since he was little” and was with his friends, without any further pretensions, focused on passing his first year of Baccalaureate and heading toward some Engineering.. But that day he suffered an attack on the field that he still cannot understand today.

«After finishing the match, young fans of the local team entered the field and attacked players from the visiting team, causing the Sagrat Cor goalkeeper to end up badly, with several kicks to the head.. I have only managed to appreciate a player from the local team, LP, kicking him. Subsequently, the public forces were notified,” says the match referee in a cold but precise report.. According to witnesses, on the field of the Barcelonista Terlenka Club, in El Prat, just after the final whistle “between 10 and 12 people” jumped from the back onto the field to hit the Sagrat Cor players and ended up hooking the goalkeeper.. They beat him with the help even, as the referee recorded, of a local soccer player.. Sagrat Cor's last minute goal to take the 1-2 victory was the excuse for the attack.

“When they scored, my son celebrated by clenching his fists and I heard someone from the stands yell at him: 'Don't celebrate because now I'm going to break your legs.'. We didn't pay attention to him, but later…. When I got to him after the beating, he was shaking, it was horrible.. It could have been a death in the field. If he doesn't protect himself, they break his head, they kill him,” denounces the goalkeeper's mother, Patricia, who details the damage report.

Complaint to the Mossos

In addition to several cranial hematomas, LF. He has a broken thumb on his right hand, which will not only prevent him from playing for several weeks, it will also prevent him from following his classes normally and taking the insulin he needs as a diabetic.. A part of the Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Esplugues confirms the injury and is the basis of the complaint that the goalkeeper's family has filed against LP, the local footballer who participated in the beating. The sports procedure, however, is already closed. According to what was recorded in the minutes, the Catalan Football Federation imposed three games behind closed doors on the CB. Terlenka and eight match sanctions for the aggressor in question. Nothing else. Although Sagrat Cor claimed and stressed that the Mossos already performed in another game for the same team this season.

«We are collaborating with the Mossos and the sanctioned kid is not coming to train. What he did is serious, but he is a 16-year-old boy, we cannot sentence him,” says José Sandoval, director of Terlenka, but the victim, LF. would not you agree. “Whoever hit me will be able to play before me and will also be able to be in the second leg.”. After all, this year we are going to meet again on a soccer field. “I don't understand it,” he says.

All attacks in football

What happened to him is another example of the scourge that dirtyes football, that blackens its atmosphere from the elite to the lower categories.. The data is alarming and, despite the campaigns, it is not improving. According to the Civil Guard count for the State Commission against violence, racism and xenophobia and intolerance in sport, in the 2018-2019 season, the last one with data, there were agents in 9,118 non-professional matches, 6,362 football matches. and 2,756 from other sports and almost all the incidents recorded, 98.8%, were in football. Specifically, they performed in 174 matches and only two were from another sport, basketball.. Most of the time (107) they had to protect the referee, although there were also many attacks between spectators (45) and, as in the case of LF, from spectators to players or vice versa (20).

The annual summary of the National Sports Office of the National Police, which only acts in professional events, also shows similar numbers: last season, 2021-2022, they expelled 593 spectators from the stands and arrested 93 and everyone was watching soccer.

“I wouldn't have any problems in basketball”

«It is depressing that to play football I have to go through this. “If I went to basketball I wouldn't have these problems,” says the victim, LF, who years ago already left a club to escape from his competitive environment and return to school.. «Me because I love football. If someone signs up just to see how it goes, without so much passion, it won't even last a year.. In every game I receive insults, threats…. “They tell me everything,” he adds, unprotected despite the evolution of the legislation.

According to articles 47 and 48 of the Law on comprehensive protection of children and adolescents against violence, the so-called Rhodes Law, approved in 2021, all the entities involved -federations, clubs…- have three specific obligations: training of professionals who work with children, having a protection delegate and developing protocols that address “discrimination, insults and humiliation in sporting contexts.”

In the majority of cases, none of the three requirements are met and this ends in an aggressive environment, if not violent, and, in the end, in incidents and boredom.. A joint study by the Pablo Olavide University of Seville and the University of Huelva revealed that 40% of adolescents abandon sports between 12 and 14 years old – 48% in the case of girls, 33% of men – and concluded that the main cause was “the impact of the sports environment” on their self-esteem.

«After everything that happened, going to the hospital and to the Mossos to report, we arrived home at 12 at night, we sat on the sofa and I told my son: 'You will make me happy the day you quit football. '”, recalls the mother, Patricia, who, apparently, will not see her wishes fulfilled: “He wants to play again and he will. But he will have to spend a few weeks in rehabilitation and it will be difficult for him to put his hand. “I have already told him that he is free to play again, but I don't want him to share the field with someone who has kicked him in the head.”
