Unearthing History: Discover the Charming Municipality of Capdepera

Nestled in the easternmost region of the captivating island of Mallorca, the municipality of Capdepera exudes a rich tapestry of history and tradition.

With a modest population of around 12,000 inhabitants, the local architecture harmoniously blends with the hilly landscape, showcasing an array of traditional Mallorcan houses.

Unlike heavily tourist-laden areas, Capdepera retains its authentic charm, making it an ideal destination for those seeking an immersive and genuine experience.

Embark on a Fascinating Journey:

Capdepera boasts a captivating past, dating back to the Bronze Age around 1300 BC, when settlers from the Eastern Mediterranean first set foot on Mallorca.

This era marked the rise of the “talaiots,” characterized by round tower buildings with a central column supporting a flat-roofed chamber.

Strategically located on hills and significant vantage points, these talaiots served as strongholds during the constant inter-tribal conflicts of ancient times.

Today, remnants of these remarkable structures can be found in the western settlements of Canyamel, while the Claper des Gegants stands as the largest talaiot on the island, adorning its eastern slope.

An Island’s Transformative Journey:

The Roman period followed, with the Roman general Caecilius V of Balearic conquering Mallorca in 123 AD.

This historical period witnessed the emergence of “Caput Petra,” later known as “Capdepera,” appearing on Ptolemy’s map.

Throughout the municipality, fragments of ceramic ware, amphorae, and sunken ships from the Roman era provide glimpses into this transformative phase.

Subsequent centuries brought various conquests, invasions, and even the decline of Mallorca under Germanic tribes. Byzantine rule briefly graced the island, giving way to Muslim rule in 707.

However, King Jaime I of Aragon reclaimed Mallorca in 1229, with Capdepera becoming a pivotal point in his strategic plan to conquer Menorca.

The ingenious plan involved lighting numerous fires to create the illusion of a powerful army, successfully leading the Muslims to cede the island to the crown of Aragon.

Known as the Treaty of Capdepera, this historic peace agreement is one of the oldest known treaties, preserved in the National Library of Paris.

The Stalwart Castle-Fortress:

The fortified castle of Capdepera was commissioned by King James II as a protective bastion against invasions and pirate raids.

Initially, the locals were skeptical about living within the fortress walls, but they soon found solace and safety within its confines. Legend has it that the Majorcans, while under siege, placed an image of Our Lady of Hope on the castle wall, causing the attackers to retreat amidst dense fog.

Annually, this miracle is celebrated with a traditional fiesta. From the 16th century onwards, Capdepera witnessed various transformations, including becoming a military outpost, leading to most of the population residing outside the fortress walls.

The local church of the Virgin de la Esperanza, once bustling with parishioners, now stands empty.

In the 18th century, the Bourbons ushered in political and military changes, creating a professional army stationed at the castle, safeguarding the coastline at the expense of the royal treasury.

Capdepera Today:

In the mid-19th century, the military withdrew from the castle, and it was later auctioned off. During the 20th century, the fortress endured a dark phase as a prison during Franco’s era.

With the advent of democracy, the castle was gifted to the city and protected as a historical monument by the newly established municipal council in 1979.

Exploring Capdepera:

To fully relish the wonders of Capdepera, don comfortable closed shoes and set out early in the morning to avoid the midday heat. Marvel at panoramic views of the sea and coastline, and if the weather permits, gaze upon the enchanting island of Menorca.

The castle transforms into a captivating spectacle when illuminated in the evening from all directions. After exploring historical monuments, wander through the medieval narrow streets of Capdepera, where 14th-century mansions, the town hall, and the traditional Balearic-style parish of San Bartolome await.

Don’t miss the church of San Juan, adorned with wooden figures of the patrons of Capdepera, who safeguarded the locals from pirate and Moorish raids. Wednesdays offer a treat with a traditional market featuring local delicacies.

Capdepera’s Allure Continues:

While in Capdepera, take time to venture along simple trekking routes that commence from the town. Follow well-marked trails that lead you on a leisurely walk amidst the scenic mountains, offering an invigorating experience for a couple of hours.

Immerse Yourself in Festivities:

Capdepera hosts several traditional Spanish festivals throughout the year, allowing visitors to delve deeper into the local culture. Experience the medieval fair in May, complete with jousting tournaments, falconry displays, and stalls showcasing exquisite handicrafts.

July comes alive with the vibrant Virgen de Carmel street fiesta, while late August marks the celebrations of St. Bartholomew and St. Roch with sports events, traditional street processions, songs, and dances.

Requests to get rid of being at the polling station shoot up 76%

The surprise call of the general elections, just hours after having voted at the local and regional polls, caught thousands of Spaniards with the wrong foot. July 23, in the heat of heat, is a completely unusual date for a general election. For this reason, and given the lack of foresight, the Central Electoral Board approved an instruction last month to allow those who already had contracted vacations to avoid going to a polling station.

That clarified his situation.. But it did not clear that of those who plan to go on vacation and had not yet hired them when Pedro Sánchez pressed the red button for the electoral advance. And those are the vast majority.. This circumstance explains why the number of people who have tried to excuse their presence at the polling stations on 23-J has skyrocketed with respect to the municipal elections on 28-M. If then there were 18,238 requests, now, in the middle of the summer season, the figure has catapulted to 32,169. Almost double. Specifically, 76% more.

This is confirmed by the report of the Ministry of the Interior on the excuses that the Spaniards make for not going to be part of the electoral tables of 23-J, to which EL MUNDO has agreed.

74% of excuses have been accepted. There are 23,757 people who already have substitutes, because the municipalities raffle more places than they need, to have substitutes. 21.5% of requests have been denied. In addition, there are 2,908 that had not yet been accounted for on the morning of July 18, which is when the government report is dated..

pending petitions

This document contains another striking fact. There are still 1,555 requests pending processing. In other words, as of July 18, almost 1,500 polling stations remain to be closed (it is understood that some of the excuses correspond to the same polling station).. In any case, there are many more than 1,000. And the figure could be higher, because there are 5,379 people who have not yet been notified if their case is favorable or if their justification is denied.

Of course, the figure will surely decrease between today and tomorrow. In addition, special emphasis must be placed on the fact that, in any case, the constitution of the tables is ensured. Because? Because the excuses that are not answered is as if they were not accepted. According to the Electoral Law, the positions of presidents or members of a polling station are mandatory. Which? A prison sentence of three months to one year or a fine of six to 24 months.

In Spain, 60,340 polling stations are formed and there are 543,060 polling station members. And 6% of them have claimed to be absent.

That said, the most innovative thing about the report -which has 10 pages and is full of comparative graphs- is that the enormous increase in excuses for not being at the polling stations is not precisely due to the fact that there were many people with vacations contracted in advance. They only represent 20% of the total.. one in five. The other 80% are people who allege other circumstances so as not to evade the process in the middle of the summer season -in which, by the way, most polling stations do not have air conditioning and temperatures above 35 degrees are expected in some provinces-.

And among them, the one that shoots the most is the care of “infants”. From 455 cases it goes to 1,104, 142% more. The care of children under 12 years of age is the justification for another 1,408 people, 81% more than in the elections two months ago. On the opposite side of the demographic pyramid, there are 3,033 who ask to get rid of working at the table on Sunday because they are over 65, 88% more than on 28-M. And claims for disability increased by 84%, and those for temporary disability, by 54%.

The care of relatives is what 1,435 people who had had to go to the table of their electoral college allege. They are 60% more than 28-M. And so a long list of “excuses” that show that the holidays are not the first reason. At least, the first stated reason.

The City Council does not authorize the Reggaeton Beach Festival in Villaverde scheduled for this weekend and the organization maintains the call

The Madrid City Council has suspended the celebration of the Reggaeton Beach Festival (RBF) scheduled for this coming weekend of July 22 and 23 in the controversial Iberdrola Music space in Villaverde (the area where MadCool was held) due to the fact that guarantee the security or evacuation conditions suitable for an event of these characteristics. The attendance of 50,000 people was announced, many of them coming from outside Madrid and Spain. In that same space, the MadCool festival and the Harry Styles concert have been held, which left a barrage of criticism against the organization of both events in which people suffered agonizing situations to be able to leave. Artists such as Ozuna, Anuel AA, Arcángel, Jhayco, Eladio Carrion, Bryant Myers, Mora, Lunay, Sech and Young Miko were scheduled to perform this Saturday and they would do so in Barcelona on Sunday.

Despite this municipal announcement, the organizer of the Reggaeton Beach Festival maintains the call scheduled for this weekend. In a statement, the promoter of the festival maintains that “all the measures required by the authorities in relation to the assembly of said event” have been adopted and all the corrections requested in the Mobility plan have been presented in due time and form, to the as well as “all the considerations requested in the security and mobility meetings held with the city council and security forces”, without obtaining any unfavorable report.

The Consistory has explained that a security meeting was held this week with the Government Delegation where all the parties involved have conveyed their concern about holding this festival in a complex location for mobility when large events take place.

This decision is taken after the organizer has presented an incomplete mobility plan today. In addition, the Madrid City Council Fire Brigade, which previously supervised the event, has issued an unfavorable report on the event.. Nor do they have authorization to exceed the maximum decibels established in the Noise ordinance.

The festival website, for the moment, has not reported anything about the suspension of the event.

During the celebration of MadCool and at the Harry Styles concert last Friday at this Villaverde venue, there were serious mobility problems in the area with kilometric queues of vehicles, traffic jams to get out and people crossing the M-45. The Madrid City Council blamed the problems on the fact that the Getafe City Council closed part of the access to the M-45.

Sources from the Getafe City Council, involved in this matter both due to the proximity of the municipality to the site and for reasons of mobility, while access to the space from the south is via the M-45 motorway, an access road and departure to Getafe, they had already announced today that the festival was not going to be held in Villaverde.

The mayoress of Getafe, Sara Hernández, has had a telephone conversation with the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, in which she has transmitted the “security problems” of the last weekends at the Iberdrola Music. The Getafense Consistory argues that the Municipal Police presented a report on the security problems in the previous events where it also detailed that the noise levels established by the regulations were exceeded.

“The next objective is to move the 'Iberdrola Music' venue, located 300 meters from the homes, to another point in the city where it does not affect residents of Getafe or the capital, starting with the 'Coca Cola Music Experience' festival ' September”, concludes the Consistory.

The mayoress of Getafe was scheduled to meet today with representatives of the Madrid City Council to convey the security problems of recent weekends and ask for the suspension, sources from the Getafense consistory report. He also conveyed his concerns to the Government delegate, Francisco Martín.

The Regional Federation of Neighborhood Associations had been denouncing for more than four months that the Villaverde venue was not conditioned for concerts and warned of the problems that could arise from the proximity to the homes, the M-45 and the lack of parking spaces. .

After spending the entire campaign warning Pedro Sánchez that “the price” of his investiture will rise if he is in a position to revalidate the presidency of the Government, ERC has established what would be the requirements that it would impose on the socialist candidate to support him.

There are three demands that the Republicans would pose to Sánchez: to delve into the negotiation on self-determination with the aim of agreeing to hold an independence referendum, to end the “fiscal deficit” – without specifying whether this entails agreeing to a kind of concert to the Basque or an improvement of the autonomic financing system- and the transfer of the Cercanías railway network.

The person in charge of listing the conditions of what has been the preferred partner of the PSOE during the current legislature has been the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, who has acted as Sánchez's main interlocutor to consummate assignments such as the elimination of the crime of sedition or the granting of pardons to secessionist leaders convicted of organizing 1-O.

By specifying the cost of Sánchez's investiture, ERC has distanced itself from the other great Catalan separatist force in the fray, Junts, which categorically refuses to anoint the socialist, as Carles Puigdemont himself confirmed last Sunday.

The neoconvergents accompany their refusal of an ordeal to ERC. On Tuesday they proposed to the Republicans that they agree not to invest any president of Spain until they have committed to transferring to Catalonia the powers to be able to hold an independence referendum autonomously.

The differences between ERC and Junts remain when the electoral campaign is about to end and come to confirm the impossibility of forming a pro-independence “common front” as Aragonès claimed after the secessionist debacle of 28-M. The formations led by Oriol Junqueras and Laura Borràs immediately ruled out coming together in a joint list, in the style of Junts pel Sí.

Nor were they able to capture in their electoral programs any coincidental proposal to set a “lowest common denominator” among all the pro-independence forces.. And it also seems complicated that they will be able to agree on a “unity of action” in Congress once the general elections have been held and the time comes to transfer the separatist strategy to the Cortes.

Barbón "accelerates" his pact with IU in Asturias

Adrián Barbón announced this Wednesday that the negotiation he is maintaining with the United Left to form a “progressive” and “reformist” government in Asturias “is accelerating”, he defined, given the loss of power of the PSOE after the regional and municipal elections in May and the proximity of the general ones.

The socialist leader made this statement at the end of the debate where he was invested as president of the Principality, in the first vote and by an absolute majority, after receiving the support of the 23 left-wing deputies of the General Board: 19 from the PSOE, three from Convocatoria por Asturias -IU and the representative of Podemos, who announced her support shortly before the plenary session after consulting the militancy on the issue and aware that she will not enter the Executive when Barbón questions the “stability” of her party.

The leader of the IU in Asturias, Ovidio Zapico, urged Barbón to close his pact before the elections this Sunday to favor the “comeback” that PSOE and Sumar are looking for this Sunday. “I am sure that the best thing for our social base to go to vote encouraged and convinced that it is possible to win the elections is that we achieve an agreement in Asturias,” he argued.

The relevance of the Principality in the PSOE power map has increased after the debacle of the municipal and regional elections in May. Adrián Barbón is now the only autonomous socialist president next to Emiliano García-Page in Castilla-La Mancha. In this context, the number one on the PSOE list for Congress for Asturias, Adriana Lastra, showed off this Wednesday her great harmony with the president-elect and was one of the first to embrace Barbón after his inauguration.

The leader of the PP, Diego Canga, asked Barbón to prevent Asturias from being “an island of the left within a country that has turned towards the center right” and maintained his offer of great pacts but warned that “if it is tied to IU , it makes it very difficult for us to reach out ». “Centrality is not agreeing with IU,” he remarked.

Barbón was willing to reach agreements with the PP, Podemos or Foro, although not with Vox, with four of the 45 deputies of the regional parliament, which he keeps, like the last legislature, out of all contact. The president-elect has admitted that he would have liked to govern alone and his goal is for the new Governing Council to be constituted on August 1.

Vox signs María del Camino Limia, the rancher who confronted Garzón, as counselor in Extremadura

Lawyer by career, first in Zamora, where she developed urban plans for the Junta de Castilla y León, and then shepherd and rancher of 100% merino sheep for hunting in Don Benito (Badajoz).. Her name is María del Camino Limia (Zamora, 1984) and she is the one chosen by Vox to be the Minister of Forest Management and Rural World in María Guardiola's cabinet, as EL MUNDO has learned from reliable sources.

Camino, as it is known in the agricultural world, already had many followers on social networks due to its activity, but it was as a result of an interview published by EL MUNDO in January 2022, when it rose to fame.. After her response to the minister in this newspaper, Camino was requested by numerous national media, especially on television, which gave her great popularity.

Great communicator, she owns 6,000 pure cattle and has recovered transhumance as an avant-garde production model to manage farms. Since the end of 2021, he has presided over the Sustainable World Livestock Association, present in 28 countries -mostly Hispanic-American- that groups more than 2,000 farms and 150,000 hectares.

María Guardiola will announce the names of all her advisers on Thursday – and they will take office on Friday – in a process that has taken a few days until Vox has already formalized the incorporation of its adviser after an intense casting among several people from the agrarian world of Estremadura.

The selection process has included various interviews, some of them online and others face-to-face, even in Madrid, with the presidents of Asaja Cáceres, Ángel García Blanco, or Asaja Badajoz, Juan Metidieri, who rejected said proposal. The president of Aceriber, Elena Diéguez, was also touched. Finally, and after several days of selection, the chosen one is María del Camino Limia.

“He is an ignoramus who does not know the production system or its producers, a puppet at the service of ecoterrorist movements, and who with his attacks puts us at the level of the great brick speculators,” he said of Garzón in that interview with this newspaper. the new counselor of Vox.

And he also added: “Garzón has done terrible damage to the Spain Brand, a man who is not known for a trade or benefit, only attacking the primary sector. A politician who is not prepared and who should never have held that position and who will make empty Spain increasingly empty.”

After voluntarily leaving her post in the administration, as she herself has confessed, she went to Extremadura where she became a farmer on an individual basis, although she was also entrusted with other farms, such as in Trujillo, where she manages the La Llave Merino cattle ranch, which won the first business award in Sustainable Development two years ago for “leading a project that is respectful of the environment and helping to recognize the value of the pasture”.

In addition, he managed the start-up of the Olivenza (Badajoz) slaughterhouse from its opening until it finally settled on a leased farm in Medellín (Badajoz).

The Vox representative will therefore be the seventh director in the team formed by María Guardiola, which in principle will have that small number of directors. The names of Elena Manzano, a trusted person of the new president of the Board, seem confirmed. Former councilor of the PP of Cáceres in the last legislature, she is a professor of Financial and Tax Law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Extremadura and between 2014-2016 she was a director of the Consultative Council of Extremadura. He will be the head of the Ministry of Finance, although the rest of his powers remain to be confirmed.

And in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, which was split in half to give the other part to Vox as part of the agreement to form the government, will be led by Mercedes Morán, who was general director of the PAC in the Monago government. and it is also from the hard core of María Guardiola.

In turn, another woman, Sara García Espada, who was number 2 on the list for the regional elections for the PP in Badajoz, and therefore is a deputy in this legislature, has all the ballots to lead the Ministry of Health. A doctor and nurse by profession, she was vice-secretary of the College of Physicians of Badajoz.

Finally, the general secretary of the PP of Extremadura, and spokesman in the regional parliament, Abel Bautista, will in turn have the rank of adviser in the Presidency. The rest of the names are yet to be officially confirmed, an issue that will finally be resolved this Thursday, when they are officially announced.

What is botulism? These are your symptoms

The botulism outbreak associated with packaged potato tortillas has so far left seven cases in Spain, with three people requiring treatment in the ICU. Four of them -two citizens of Italy who consumed this product in Valladolid, one in Asturias and a fourth in Galicia- have been confirmed, and three -in Madrid, Andalusia and the Valencian Community- have a compatible clinical situation.

Both the two confirmed cases from Galicia and Asturias -two people aged 49 and 50, respectively, who ate this product between June 19 and July 5- and the probable one from Madrid -49 years old and who started symptoms last day 10- have required treatment in the ICU, as reported by the Center for Coordination of Health Emergencies and Alerts (CCAES) this Wednesday.

What is botulism?

Botulism is a rare but serious disorder that is caused by toxins produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria.. These toxins produce weakness or paralysis in the nerves.

How does it contract?

Clostridium botulinum bacteria are found in soil and untreated water around the world.. They can reach the human organism in different ways. The most frequent types of botulism are alimentary, which is produced by the consumption of food contaminated with the toxin; Wound botulism can also occur if bacteria enter the body through a wound and produce the toxin. There is also the so-called infant botulism, which occurs when the spores of the bacteria multiply in the intestine of the affected baby.. Botulism associated with an incorrect injection of botulinum toxin for cosmetic or medical reasons is less frequent. This type is called iatrogenic botulism.

What are the symptoms?

Among other problems, difficulty swallowing or speaking may appear; facial weakness on both sides of the face; blurred or double vision; drooping eyelids; difficulty breathing; paralysis: nausea and vomiting, etc.. In the case of infant botulism, constipation is often the first symptom. Muscle weakness and head control problems also appear; weak cry, irritability, drooling, drooping eyelids, tiredness, problems sucking or feeding, or paralysis, among others. It is essential to quickly seek medical help when botulism is suspected, as it can be deadly.

How is it treated?

In a case of botulism, it is necessary to administer a substance that blocks the action of toxins (antitoxin) as soon as possible.. In many cases, activated charcoal is also used to remove any toxins that have not yet been absorbed.. Close monitoring of vital signs is necessary, as the infection can be very serious and require admission to an intensive care unit.

For what uses is botulinum toxin authorized?

The Spanish Medicines Agency (AEMPS) has authorized the marketing in Spain of 16 presentations of nine drugs that contain botulinum toxin in their composition. Each product is authorized for a series of specific indications, presentations are not interchangeable. The best-known licensed use of botulinum toxin is to temporarily improve facial lines such as those that occur between the eyebrows, crow's feet, or lines around the mouth, in adults younger than 65 years of age, “when the intensity of these lines has an important psychological impact for the patient”, indicates the data sheet.

However, beyond aesthetic medicine, some presentations of botulinum toxin are also indicated in disorders such as focal spasticity secondary to stroke, cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis), blepharospasm, or for the relief of symptoms in adults who meet the criteria for chronic migraine, among others.

This treatment is also indicated in cases of idiopathic overactive bladder, urinary incontinence or hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

The Palacios Group asks not to consume its tortillas sold in Carrefour, El Corte Inglés, Dia and 9 other supermarkets due to the botulism outbreak

The Palacios Alimentación Business Group has alerted consumers this morning to refrain from eating and returning to the store the packaged potato tortillas they manufacture and which has been related to an outbreak of botulism that has so far left seven cases in several autonomous communities .

In a statement sent to EFE, the Palacios Group requests “all those who have purchased one of these products (Chef Select, Auchan, Eroski, Unide, Consum, DIA, Ametller, Condis, El Corte Ingles, Carrefour, Alipende and Rikissimo) refrain from consuming it and proceed to return it to the point of sale where they purchased it, where the amount will be refunded”.

The company also says it has decided “voluntarily, as a precaution, to withdraw from the shelves of the points of sale the fresh packaged potato omelette produced in the Mudrian factory, as well as temporarily stop its manufacture.”

However, it maintains that “it has not been possible to establish evidence, neither in the products nor in the processes, that relate cause and effect” with respect to this company as a manufacturer of the product, as the Spanish Agency for Information stated on Tuesday in an informative note. Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN).

The outbreak of botulism associated with packaged potato tortillas has so far left seven cases, of which four -two citizens of Italy who consumed this product in Valladolid, one in Asturias and a fourth in Galicia- have been confirmed, and three -in Madrid, Andalusia and the Valencian Community- have a compatible clinical situation.

Both the two confirmed cases from Galicia and Asturias -two people aged 49 and 50, respectively, who ate this product between June 19 and July 5- and the probable one from Madrid -49 years old and who started symptoms last day 10- have required treatment in the ICU, as stated by the Center for Coordination of Health Emergencies and Alerts (CCAES) in the report it issued on this outbreak this Wednesday.

inspections

The Palacios Group has assured that it has adopted all the necessary measures to detect “a possible cause” and its facilities “have already been inspected four times by the health authorities with favorable results,” the statement said.

Food safety is a “priority” for the Palacios Alimentación Business Group, for which reason “it regularly carries out control analyzes for the presence of Clostridium botulinum and botulinum toxin”. Said analyses, according to the group, are part of the self-controls carried out in the company to reinforce the safety of its products, “without the pathogen or its toxins having been detected in any of the products in any case”.

The Palacios Alimentación Business Group has stressed that it is collaborating with the health authorities to clarify this episode “as soon as possible” and has apologized to its customers for any inconvenience this disorder may have caused.

At the same time, it has made available to the client a telephone line with the number 941 27 77 00 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the email palacios@palacios.es “to clarify any doubts or concerns”.

Botulism is a rare but serious disease caused by a toxin that attacks the nervous system and can cause shortness of breath, muscle paralysis and even death.. Improperly canned, preserved, or fermented foods at home can create the conditions necessary for bacteria to produce the toxin.

Suicides in adolescents grew by 32% between 2019 and 2021

Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people and adolescents between 12 and 29 years of age in Spain and its number is increasing. This is clear from the Report on the Evolution of Suicide in Spain in the Child and Adolescent Population (2000-2021) directed by Alejandro de la Torre, principal investigator of the Research Group in Psychiatric Epidemiology and Mental Health of the Complutense University of Madrid and researchers from Cibersam who just saw the light.

According to the study, prepared with data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), between 2019 and 2021 there was an increase of 32.35% in the number of suicides in adolescents (12 to 17 years old), going from 34 to 45 deaths. because of this.

Covid-19, however, is not primarily responsible for this increase, according to the report. Since 2018, in Spain there has been an increasing trend in the suicide mortality rate in all age groups.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has meant, in many ways, an important change at the level of mental health in Spain. The number of cases of suicide in the general population was increased, although in the population of young people and adolescents this impact has not been as significant, nor are changes observed in the comparisons by sex, nationality, and place of residence,” the text states..

“The increasing trend seen in mortality from suicide in Spain since 2018 also seems to be the trend in adolescents,” the document continues.

The total number of deaths by suicide in 2018 was 3,539; in 2019 it rose to 3,671 and in 2020 to 3,941, while in 2021 there were 4,003 deaths by suicide. “The data collected after the start of the Covid pandemic reflect an increase of 5.5% compared to 2018,” says the report, which has not included data for 2022 as it is not yet definitive..

alarming figures

The document highlights the impact of suicide on adolescents and young people. Thus, it points out that suicide is the leading cause of death in young people and adolescents between 12 and 29 years of age.. “Only in 2021, 336 deaths by suicide were registered in this age group in Spain, these figures being alarming,” says the report, which also underlines the fact that “two deaths of children under 12 years of age were registered, raising the figure to 338 suicides in children under 30 years of age in our country”.

In 2021, 173 people between the ages of 24 and 29 died by suicide; 118 with ages between 18 and 23; 45 between 12 and 17 years old and two under 12 years old.

Unlike in the rest of the age groups, in adolescents, the report highlights, no imbalance is observed in the number of deaths in relation to sex.

Thus, while in other age groups there is usually the fact that three out of four deaths by suicide are in males, in adolescents “this ratio has evolved since the beginning of the century from 3:1 to 1:1”.

On the other hand, according to the work data, suicides in young people “tend to occur more frequently in people born in Spain and in residents of provincial capitals.”

In terms of geographic distribution, there are rates of over 7 suicide cases per 100,000 inhabitants in five provinces: Ávila (11.67 per 100,000 inhabitants); Melilla (9.24); Palencia (8.24); Navarra (7.12) and A Coruña (7.05).

The work also indicates the absence of records of cases of suicide in young people and adolescents in the provinces of Cuenca, Guadalajara, La Rioja, Salamanca, Soria, Zamora and Ceuta..

With respect to the moment in which these deaths occur, both in young people and in young adults there is an increase in deaths by suicide in the summer months and after. However, in the case of adolescents this increase is accentuated in the months before and after the summer.
