Silent concentration in Marmolejo (Jaén) in memory of the police officer who died in an act of service in Andújar

Hundreds of residents have gathered silently in front of the Marmolejo Town Hall (Jaén) in memory of the national policeman who died in the line of duty this Sunday in Andújar (Jaén) when he and his patrol partner were going to intervene so that an armed man with a hammer and a knife, put down his attitude on the public road where he was trying to gain access to a block of flats.

It was the mayor of Marmolejo, Manuel Lozano, a municipality with less than 7,000 inhabitants, who intervened in the rally to publicly acknowledge that the death of agent Juan José Lara Egea, 40, a native and resident of Marmolejo, leaves the entire town and its neighbors “shocked, shocked and devastated”.

The City Council has decreed three days of official mourning, from 2:00 p.m. on June 11 to the same time on the 14th, with the flags flying at half mast. In addition, it has suspended all scheduled events. Likewise, it will be proposed that the deceased agent be awarded the Gold Medal of Marmolejo posthumously.

For her part, the Government sub-delegate in Jaén, Catalina Madueño, who also attended the rally, conveyed her “heartfelt condolences” to the agent's family, to all the State Security Forces and Corps and to the entire municipality of Marmolejo because he was “a very dear person”. “Unfortunately, more frequently than perhaps we should, we suffer the loss of members of the State Security Forces and Bodies in compliance with the services that they have established to protect citizens,” Madueño said in statements to the journalists.

Regarding the open investigation to clarify what happened, Madueño has indicated that he is waiting for the reports from the Judicial Police and to know the results of the autopsy, for which he has refused to go into any type of detail. The facts, which were recorded by mobile phones and whose content has been disseminated through social networks, took place around 10:00 a.m. when a man is seen, armed with a knife and a hammer, asking loudly to open the door of a block located in the Las Monjas street, in the urban center of Andújar.

After notifying the National Police, a patrol of two agents is seen arriving and getting out of the vehicle. While one of them orders him to drop the hammer and knife, the other officer stays behind.. At the moment when the assailant rushes towards the agent and he falls backwards to the ground with the gun in his hand, a shot is heard, which is what supposedly, and in the absence of expert reports, hit the advancing policeman. in the rear and that in the end has died.

The agent who fell to the ground is seen receiving blows to the head with the hammer and even a stab wound to the shoulder, until a neighbor throws himself at the attacker who was astride the policeman. This agent remains hospitalized and evolves favorably. For his part, the assailant was killed and died from a gunshot wound..

The coffin with the mortal remains of Juan José Lara is already on its way to the Marmolejo City Hall where the burning chapel will be installed. It is expected that this afternoon the general director of the National Police Force, Francisco Pardo, will award Juan José Lara the gold medal for police merit posthumously, the highest distinction awarded within the CNP.

In addition to the silent concentration in Marmolejo, in the capital Jaén, they have observed a minute of silence in memory of the deceased agent, agents of the National Police Unit Attached to the Junta de Andalucía. The delegate of the Andalusian Government in Jaén, Jesús Estrella, has also transferred the recognition to these professionals, “public servants who make their vocation of service to the citizenry great”.. Also at the Alto Guadalquivir de Andújar Hospital, where the injured agent is admitted, health professionals have gathered to observe a minute of silence for the deceased agent.

Díaz Ayuso awaits the Government to decide on the reduction to 60% of the transport pass: "This was a matter of two"

The acting president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, is waiting for the central government to make a decision on the 60% reduction in the transport pass. “Well, we will make a decision about the price of transport when the Government does it, taking into account that this was a matter of two,” the acting regional president responded succinctly when asked about this matter after participating in the inauguration of the new Rector of the Carlos III University of Madrid, Ángel Arias.

On September 1, 2022, the reduction with which the central Executive intended to alleviate the effects of the economic crisis began. Initially it was a 30% decrease subsidized by the State that was finally increased by 20% more by investing the money that the Community stopped paying for free rail.

Before the end of the year, the central government approved an extension of the 30% discount for public transport in autonomous communities for the first half of 2023, only for autonomous communities that commit to extending the discount to 50% of the price.

Given this, in the last regional Government Council of the year, the Executive of Isabel Díaz Ayuso agreed to maintain the 50% discount on the public transport subscription, which the central Executive has requested, in January and increase it to 60% from February.

If this aid declines, the monthly pass for Zone A for people over 26 and under 65 would again cost 54.60 euros, for B1 63.70 euros, for B2 72 euros and for B3-C1/C2, 82 euro. The Youth Pass will once again be the flat rate of 20 euros prior to September 22.

The M-608, where the four young women died, witness to 189 accidents in the last six years

The M-608, a 45-kilometre road that runs between the A-1 (Venturada) and the M-601 (Collado Villalba) through Soto del Real, where four young women died this Sunday in a traffic accident , has registered a total of 189 road accidents since 2018.

According to the data provided to EFE by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), 10 people have died on that regionally owned highway in those 6 years in traffic accidents, in which another 14 have been seriously injured..

The accident this Sunday, which cost the lives of a 26-year-old woman, her 15-year-old sister and two of her friends, aged 16 and 13, took place at kilometer 38 of that two-way road in circulation, two kilometers from the town center of the Madrid town of Collado Villalba.

The four deceased were returning from the Collado Villalba festivities to Moralzarzal, where they lived, when the car driven by the 26-year-old woman, who had gone to pick up the three minors, collided with the vehicle of a Civil Guard agent, from 30 years old, who was seriously injured.

Since 2018 and to date, 24 accidents have been recorded in the section between kilometers 37 and 39 of that highway, which have resulted in 5 deaths and 3 serious injuries.. A section in which the acting mayor of Moralzarzal, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Osuna, has called for improvements to be made urgently.

In statements to EFE, after the minute of silence that has been observed in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, the mayor has assured that the consistory has long warned the Community of Madrid, which has jurisdiction over the road, of its accident rate. And he has stressed that, although it is a road “with a lot of technical complication to improve it”, it is necessary to carry out the appropriate actions because there is also a large traffic of cyclists, heavy vehicles that circulate between the A-6 and the A- 1, and more than 20,000 cars daily.

Investigation sources consulted by EFE have indicated that the road conditions at the scene of the accident were good and have not influenced it, in which, in the absence of a complete report, there would be no speeding.

Felipe VI chairs the meeting of the Elcano board of trustees in the presence of the four former presidents of the Government

The King chaired this Monday the meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Elcano Royal Institute, which was attended by the four living former presidents of the Government from the democratic period: Felipe González, José María Aznar, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and Mariano Rajoy. The meeting was held at the El Pardo Palace and was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares; the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robes, and the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta.

The coincidence of the four former presidents has allowed us to see at the beginning of the meeting conversations between the two former heads of the Socialist Executive, González and Zapatero (located to the right of the King both in the family photo and in the meeting), on the one hand, and the two from the Popular Party, Aznar and Rajoy (located to his left), on the other. The latter have also met with the former minister and former general secretary of their political formation, María Dolores de Cospedal, vice president of the Elcano Institute.

In the meeting chaired by Felipe VI, who greeted each and every one of the members of the Board of Trustees present at the beginning of the meeting, the annual accounts of the Institute were approved, which in 2022 obtained a surplus of 337,000 euros.

The president of the institute, José Juan Ruiz, and its director, Charles Powell, have presented their corresponding reports and the activity report has also been approved. There were 50 public events organized last year and 312 documents published on the issues of its 10 lines of research.

61% of the readers of these works are from outside Spain, with Mexico, Colombia and Peru as the countries that downloaded the most documents.

At the meeting, the document entitled Why Latin America Matters was presented, which contrasts the visions that present this region as economically unsuccessful and politically unstable with what is considered to be reality, since it interprets that these perceptions are strongly biased by presumptions and prejudices. Likewise, it reviews the challenges of the Spanish presidency of the European Union and the opportunity it represents to strengthen relations with Latin America and the Caribbean..

Among his proposals is the creation of an EU-Latin America Trade and Technology Council similar to the one the European Union already has with the United States and India to promote dialogue and coordinate joint actions on issues such as energy, food and water security, supply chains, migration and transnational terrorism.

Among the almost 40 attendees at the meeting of the Board of Trustees were the governor of Banco de España, Pablo Hernández de Cos; the presidents of Banco de Santander, Ana Botín; CaixaBank, José Ignacio Goirigolzarri; Repsol, Antonio Brufau, and Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, and the CEOs of Inditex, Óscar García; and Endesa, José Bogas.

Calviño challenges Feijóo to an economic debate and criticizes that his program "is nothing"

The economy is already a clear axis in the campaign for 23-J. The minister of the sector, Nadia Calviño, has verified this in her first intervention since Ferraz, in which she has vindicated the PSOE model and challenged the opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to a debate “with the person who [since the PP] is going to coordinate that space”. In this way, he urges Genoa to make its strategy clear: “What proposal does the PP have, how is it going to reduce the debt if it lowers taxes?”. Calviño, who is not affiliated with the PSOE and works as an independent, has avoided answering other organic questions from the Socialists, such as when he was asked about the party's poor prospects in the pre-election polls..

Instead, he has focused on confronting the popular or flagging his management in the Government. “The PP does not want to talk about the economy because the Spanish economy is doing very well,” summarizes. It conditions a future victory in the elections that these tasks can be “completed”, knowing that there are barely six weeks left after the president announced an electoral advance, after losing almost all his regional power on 28-M.

Calviño's first intervention at the PSOE headquarters comes after a meeting to organize the party's electoral program before 23-J. This has been Sánchez's decision despite the fact that the head of Economy does not have a socialist card and even having summoned other ministers who do have it to the meeting. Beyond claiming what has been achieved, it has practically not revealed new measures or given details of what could have been agreed upon in the committee. Yes, it has announced an extension in the VAT reduction on food and guaranteed that it has been a “productive” and “fruitful” appointment.

It also downplays the role that its minority partner in the Government, Unidas Podemos, has adopted in the deployment of the economic agenda throughout the legislature: “It has had practically no influence”. A dart that now also touches the Minister of Labor and leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz, who took office promoted by this group and has been the architect of the labor reform.

Calviño's role

Claiming its economic model and giving prominence to the minister who promoted it is one of the fundamental cards with which the PSOE will try to take advantage of the PP after the fiasco of 28-M, which turned the regional map blue. In addition, Calviño's technocratic and independent profile – which even so has adopted an increasingly political discourse – makes her an important asset for the Socialists, since she can attract a more moderate voter.. However, and despite his involvement in the campaign, he will not go on the electoral lists that his party approved two days before, in a federal committee that the main critical barons of the PSOE, Emiliano García-Page and Javier Lambán, did not attend..

“They are personal decisions”, he answers the reason for this decision.. “Going on an electoral list or not has nothing to do with my commitment”, the minister reiterated, who does not close the door to repeat within the Executive if Sánchez wins after 23-J and asks him: “We are very comfortable working together, now and in the future”. The challenge now, he says, is to “consolidate what has been achieved”. He claims star measures such as aid for public transport or actions to lower inflation and “relieve the pockets of families”, and assumes problems when it comes to “communicating” the Government's management, which he attributes solely to an “environment of tension and noise”.

The meeting this Monday with the coordinators of the electoral program, behind closed doors, began at around 11 in the morning. The initial forecast was that Calviño would go out to present it an hour later, but the negotiations were delayed and finally it did not happen until almost one thirty. In an informative note prior to the appearance, it was reported that other members of the Executive such as the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños; the third vice president and head of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera; the person in charge of the Treasury, María Jesús Montero, or that of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations, José Luis Escrivá, who is not a member of the party either, have been at the meeting. The president of the PSOE, Cristina Narbona; the Secretary for Studies and Programs, Idoia Mendía, and the MEP Lina Gálvez.

The instant jump from one campaign to another has opened a frantic and time-trial path for 23-J. However, that Sánchez opted for a minister without a socialist card to speak from her headquarters and about her program is not by chance. The president seeks to take advantage of his most recent good macroeconomic data – the OECD has just increased its forecast for Spanish GDP growth, for example – to reinforce the idea that Spain has improved during his term despite two serious crises such as the pandemic or the war from Ukraine. Under this premise, a recognized profile such as Calviño's intends to be an asset against Feijóo, who is still finalizing his lists.

“What is very important is that Spanish citizens know who is the person that Mr. Feijóo considers the most qualified to lead and design the economic policy of the PP”, this has been his conclusion. The popular leader, for his part, has also announced this morning those designated as heads of the provincial list, among whom he places members of the economic team of Juan Bravo, his deputy secretary in the matter. Among them, the Minister of Economy of the Region of Murcia, Luis Alberto Marín; or the Secretary of Industry, Tourism and Commerce in Genoa, José Vicente Marín, who is leaving the Senate to be number one in the Lower House for the Balearic Islands.

Genoa vetoes the candidate convicted of mistreatment and tense the dialogue with Vox in Valencia

The negotiation between the Popular Party and Vox is tense in the Valencian Community. With barely 24 hours left before the first meeting of the conservative presidential candidate for the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón, with the delegation of Santiago Abascal to negotiate a possible investiture, Genoa has set a red line. The popular ones will not accept the presence in the autonomous government of a person convicted of sexist violence. This was stated on Monday by the national spokesman for the PP, Borja Sémper. He did not name names, but it is clear who he is referring to: Carlos Flores Juberías, sentenced to a year in prison 11 years ago for psychological abuse of his ex-wife, regional candidate for Vox and aspiring to occupy a vice-presidency together with Mazón, following the agreed model in Castile and Leon.

“Genoa's specific position towards a person who has been convicted of mistreatment is that they should not dedicate themselves to public life. There are some open conversations that our colleagues in Valencia will resolve. And it goes everywhere. We believe that a person convicted of abuse should not go into politics,” insisted Sémper at the press conference after the meeting of the steering committee. “Anyone who has been convicted of sexist violence is a red line,” he reiterated..

Sémper's statements come at a critical time, and only add more pressure to an already complicated deal. The Valencian PP, led by Carlos Mazón, has held meetings with the Socialists (last Thursday) and with Compromís (this Monday) in their search for support for the investiture. In both cases, the abstention offer has been slammed, so with its 40 seats it needs at least 10 of Vox's 13 (99 deputies in the Cortes) to be sworn in as president of the Generalitat. However, this was not the opinion of the Valencian PP a few moments before. Asked about the possible investiture negotiation with Flores in his appearance before the media after the meeting with Compromís, the popular regional coordinator and number three of Mazón, Juan Francisco Pérez Llorca, assured that “the PP has not vetoed anyone”.. Sources from the organization in Valencia later assured that there was nothing to add to Pérez's opinion, thus implying that they did not share the Genoa guideline.

Genoa has maintained its desire to try to govern alone to the end, and the popular candidates will try to carry that condition to the end to stop Vox's expectations in its tracks. But authorized party sources acknowledge that the case of the Valencian Community is “even more difficult”, since the result that PP and Vox have obtained in the 28-M elections is a carbon copy of the result that the two forces obtained in Castilla and Lion. In this region, PP and Vox govern in coalition, and Mañueco ceded to those of Abascal a convincing booty: the presidency of the Cortes, the vice presidency and three councils.

The red line that Sémper has raised this Monday tests Vox's fidelity to its head of the list, with the composition of the Bureau and the Presidency of the regional Parliament as the first station to be overcome by the two right-wing formations on June 26 , date marked for the constitution of the chamber. The first meeting for the investiture takes place this Tuesday. The initial forecast is that Carlos Flores attends the meeting scheduled in the Cortes.

Sources close to Flores recalled that the invitation to the meeting was “in the handwriting” of Carlos Mazón to the candidate himself as head of the Vox list. In addition, they highlighted that the popular ones had no qualms about defending the profile of the professor of Constitutional Law for the Valencian Transparency Council, when he was questioned as a member of this advisory body of the Generalitat during the last legislature by the PSPV-PSOE, Compromís and Unidas Podemos .

What is known about the traffic accident in Collado Villalba in which several minors from Moralzarzal have died?

Four young people have lost their lives on the road, including three minors. The women, aged 26, 16, 15 and 13, died this Sunday, June 11, after a traffic accident, a frontal collision, on the M-608, at 5:50 a.m., reported 112 Community of Madrid. The girls lived in Moralzarzal, a small municipality of 12,000 inhabitants in the Sierra de Guadarrama, and were returning from the Collado Villalba festivities. The host, Polina Biserova, 26 years old and of Bulgarian origin, was well known for being one of the owners of the Arya nightclub in Moralzarzal.. From there she left to go pick up her 15-year-old sister, Leonor, and two other friends, Erika and Lila, who had gone to the festivals in Villalba, some six kilometers away..

The driver, for reasons that are yet to be determined, lost control of the vehicle, a Toyota Yaris, and left the two-way road on the right hand side.. The first evidence indicates that, after making two or three very abrupt maneuvers, the vehicle invaded the opposite direction and collided from the front with another car that was driving in the direction of Collado Villalba. The crash occurred in a curve, almost the only one on the route that joins the two towns, without visibility and slightly banked with a narrow shoulder. The first data handled by the Madrid Traffic Civil Guard do not point to excessive speed; but rather a little lack of attention.

In the other vehicle was a 30-year-old woman, a Civil Guard agent at the Villalba barracks, who was on her way to work and who has been transferred in serious condition to the Puerta de Hierro Hospital.. She has a broken vertebra and has had to undergo surgery. Four fire crews from the community and the psychologist unit of SUMMA 112 have moved to the scene of the accident to assist relatives of the victims. However, the emergency services could do nothing, except confirm the deaths of the four young women who were also trapped in the car and whose bodies were rescued by firefighters..

three days of mourning

The mayor of Moralzarzal, Juan Carlos Rodríguez Osuna, will decree three days of official mourning for the four young victims. Through a statement, the Consistory has expressed its “pain” for the deceased and has transferred its “condolences and condolences” to the families of the four young women. “It is a tragedy for which there are no words of comfort and that has dismayed all the residents of the municipality,” the City Council stressed in the text. As for the other person who was injured in the accident, he wished him a “speedy recovery”.

The mayor has stressed that the M-608 is a “very dangerous” road – not only the curve at kilometer 38, where the accident occurred – and has “a very high traffic density”, about 20,000 vehicles every day, as it is a link for freight trucks between the A-6 and A-1 motorways, for which reason it has expressed the need to “improve this complicated transit” of vehicles.

The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, has expressed her regret after the accident and has wished a “speedy recovery” to the injured woman. “Our deepest condolences to the families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured driver. A tragedy that plunges us all into deep sadness. Rest in peace,” says Ayuso in a message on his account on the social network Twitter.

Equality confirms the murder of a 39-year-old woman in Cornellà as a sexist crime

The Ministry of Equality has confirmed this Monday as a sexist crime the murder of a 39-year-old woman this weekend in Cornellà (Barcelona), which brings to 22 the number of women murdered this year at the hands of their partners or ex-partners, 1,206 since 2003.

The victim is a woman of Honduran nationality who was murdered early Sunday morning in her apartment by stab wounds allegedly inflicted on her by her partner, a 34-year-old man also from Honduras, who was arrested in the house, where their son was. , 2 years. This minor increases the number of orphans due to gender violence to 23 so far this year.

When the agents and members of the Emergency Medical System (SEM) arrived at the house, they found the woman still alive, but she ended up dying despite attempts to revive her, according to police sources..

The alleged attacker has no criminal record, as confirmed by the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC), nor were there any previous complaints from the victim for ill-treatment, as explained by the mayor of the town, Antonio Balmón.

Feijóo revolutionizes the PP lists: includes his dome, signs a former Cs for Barcelona and places Sémper in Madrid

The PP has revealed this Monday to the heads of the provincial list that Feijóo has chosen for the Congress of Deputies, some candidacies in which “renewal” prevails and in which it has included part of its management committee. The popular leader has chosen to leave gaps in the Madrid lists, and has placed his deputy secretaries as number one for their respective provinces. Así, Cuca Gamarra heads the candidacy of Logroño; Elías, Bendodo la de Malaga; Esteban González Pons, from Valencia; Juan Bravo, from Seville; Carmen Navarro for Albacete; Carmen Fúnez for Ciudad Real, Miguel Tellado for A Coruña.

Feijóo has not included the current campaign spokesman, Borja Sémper, in the Basque Country lists, but everything indicates that the leader will swell, along with Feijóo, the Popular Party candidacy for Madrid. The only deputy secretary who has been left out of the first preview of the Genoa lists is the person in charge of regional and local coordination of the PP, Pedro Rollán, although it is taken for granted that he will also have a place on the lists for Madrid.

Placing Cuca Gamarra at the top of the list for La Rioja has a derivative. As published by El Confidencial, Génova doubted between her and another weighty woman —like Fátima Báñez— to be number two for Feijóo. The decision regarding the general secretary leaves the path clear for the former Minister of Employment to fill that gap, although the aforementioned leader could land directly in the Feijóo Council of Ministers without going through lists if he manages to beat Sánchez at the polls. The PP will solve the question of who will sit to the right of Feijóo in Congress this week.

At least in the case of the bet for the numbers one of the popular lists, Feijóo has opted for an almost total revolution and has changed 75% of the names, renewing 39 of the 52 heads of the list. The preparation of the candidacies, in which the popular leader has personally worked hand in hand with his vice-secretary for Organization, Miguel Tellado, has left some surprises, such as the signing of Nacho Martín Blanco, formerly of Cs, as number one on the list by Barcelona. The leader abandoned his seat in Parliament a few days ago to join the ranks of Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo, who currently holds that position, will also occupy a position on the list for Madrid. The PP has begun a gradual approach to the leader in recent months, and Genoa will keep her in Congress due to her ability to attract voters from Vox. In the direction of Genoa they reaffirm that joining Borja Sémper and Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo on the same list sends a “powerful” message to the voter and colors the PP with the sought-after image of transversality, capable of attracting, they say, voters located to his left and to his right.

The one of Blanco has not been the only signing coming from the ranks of the liberals. The leader of the PP has incorporated another ex of Cs by Tarragona, in this case Pere Lluís Huget, exportavoz de Cs in the Council of Salou. Sources from Genoa assure that the party first tested the current president of the PP in Catalonia, Alejandro Fernández, as head of the list for this province, but the Catalan leader rejected the proposal to continue leading the party in the region. Fernández's closure to making the leap into national politics complicates the renovation that Genoa plans for the territorial organization, in which they propose a total sanitation and a change of leadership.

Another of the surprises of Feijóo's new lists has been the incorporation of Sergio Sayas, the former UPN deputy that Feijóo rescued along with Carlos García Adanero, to whom he entrusted the party's candidacy to Pamplona. Sayas will attend Congress for Navarra, just the territory in which the break between PP and UPN has been confirmed after the lack of agreement between the leadership of Genoa and the leader of the regionalists, Javier Esparza.

Also relevant is the movement to seize from Alfonso Rueda his vice president of the Xunta, Francisco Conde, a leader of the total confidence of Núñez Feijóo who displaces the former number one for Lugo and member of the leadership of the Parliamentary Group, Jaime de Olano. The former president of Congress, Ana Pastor, repeats as head of the list for Pontevedra, while Ana Vázquez does the same in Ourense and Miguel Tellado, Feijóo's right-hand man in Genoa, will head the list of A Coruña.

In addition to Olano, Feijóo has also laminated the current deputy spokesman for the PP in Congress, Guillermo Mariscal, who gives up his position leading the candidacy of Las Palmas to the economist Jimena Delgado. Nor does Mario Garcés repeat as number one for Zaragoza, since he will now be occupied by another deputy, Pedro Navarro. This has not been the case of other heads of the list from the Pablo Casado era that Feijóo has kept in their respective positions, such as Tomás Cabezón for Soria, José Antonio Bermúdez de Castro for Salamanca, Milagros Marcos for Palencia or Carlos Rojas, who returns to head the ballot for Granada.

Feijóo has also focused on the economic sphere, and has placed several members of Juan Bravo's economic team as heads of the provincial list. This is the case of Luis Alberto Marín, Minister of Economy in the Region of Murcia, who competes as number one in this territory; o José Vicente Marí, current Secretary of Industry, Tourism and Commerce in Genoa, and who passes from the Senate to Congress as head of the Balearic Islands list. Feijóo's bet for Congress also leaves a trickle of incorporations from the Senate to Congress, such as Sofía Acedo, who will be a candidate for Melilla, or Ana Isabel Alós, number one for Huesca, or Maribel Sánchez Torregrosa for Almería.

Sentencing reductions for sexual offenders continue: 1,079 beneficiaries

The General Council of the Judiciary has published this Thursday the new balance of the effects of the law known as the only yes is yes. The courts have agreed to at least 1,079 sentence reductions in application of the rule, already repealed, according to the data collected until May 1 by the CGPJ of the Supreme Court, the National Court, the Superior Courts of Justice and the Provincial Courts. These resolutions have led to at least 108 releases.

The data is after the entry into force of the reform promoted by the PSOE to stop these reductions in the future. The changes were approved on the 26th. The very text of that modification recognized that what the Government described as “undesired effects” will last. “It is important to note that this reform can only be for the future, as the new regulatory reality has been consolidated, irreversibly, by effect of Organic Law 10/2022, of September 6, on the Comprehensive Guarantee of Sexual Freedom, both for crimes committed before the entry into force of that organic law as well as for those that have been perpetrated while it is in force. This is a consequence of article 25 of the Spanish Constitution and the constitutional principle of the retroactivity of the most favorable criminal law contained in article 9.3 of said Fundamental Law”, warns.

The PSOE reform returns in part to the system of the old Penal Code and introduces a difference in the ranges of penalties for sexual assault. When violence, intimidation or assault occurs against a woman deprived of reason or sense, for whatever reason, the punishment ranges from six to 12 years, while sexual assault carried out with abuse of superiority or taking advantage of the victim's vulnerability it is worth between four and 12.

The Council has been warning that the effects of the law of only yes is yes will continue to unfold “for years”. The reform will not prevent thousands of people accused of sexual crimes from being tried and sentenced in the future, applying the penalties established in the current text.. Different sources recall that the principle of criminal retroactivity obliges the prisoner to apply the legislation that is most favorable to him in the period from the commission of the crime to the expiration of the future sentence.. For this reason, all the procedures that are now under investigation will be marked by the controversial law and the introduction of modifications in the text will not be able to avoid it..

The legal sources consulted also warn that the current reviews, those that are known daily and that apply to sentences already handed down, will also continue despite the changes. The provisional data that they handle pushes away the end of the downward revision of sentences. The figures collected by Penitentiary Institutions indicate that there are almost 4,000 prisoners for this type of crime, either serving a sentence or in pretrial detention awaiting trial..
