The ETA member who planned to kill Mayor Rita Barberá is on the Bildu list to be a councilor

Her name is Sara Majarenas, and she is one of the 44 former members of ETA who, according to the Covite victims' association, is running in the municipal elections for Bildu. In his case, there is the great paradox that he opts for the democratic path to access local power when, in his previous life, he tried to snatch this representation with the vilest of violence. He belonged to the “Levante command” of the armed band, the one that planned the assassination of the mayoress Rita Barberá.

Majarenas has been rehabilitated for political life as an aspiring councilor in the municipality of Astigarraga, Guipúzcoa. It is number 10 on the Bildu list. When he planned to kill Barberá, he was staying at the Tartessos pension in Valencia, a few meters from the Town Hall, as Las Provincias recalled this Thursday. Now he is targeting another consistory, but one he aspires to access as a full-fledged representative.

His profuse terrorist baggage has not been, far from it, an impediment to attend the elections. As Covite recalled, Majarenas was sentenced to 13 years and 10 months in prison for crimes of illicit association, falsification of official public documents and possession of weapons without a license.. She emphasizes that her record does not include blood crimes. He served a sentence in the Picassent prison (Valencia), where his life underwent a new tragic turn.

[Sara, a terrorist when ETA killed children, repentant when her ex stabbed her daughter]

As this newspaper reported, at 37, she became the first ETA member to leave the band to take care of a child. An unprecedented event in the more than five decades of ETA's life. Yes, the group Gema Belén Rodríguez de Miguel had done it before. Majarenas did it after her ex-partner, a Greek drug trafficker she met in prison, was about to stab her daughter to death.

In the case of Majarenas, regret only came when death haunted her little Izar, three years old.. He did not have the same vision when the bombs of his fellow terrorists killed 22 children. He was not moved by the sisters Esther and Miriam Barrera, who were the same age as his little girl when ETA killed them in 1987 with a bomb at the Civil Guard barracks in Zaragoza.

Nor did he lose his conscience that that other child, Luis Delgado, lost his life in Madrid. I was only two years old. He was taken away by another explosive bearing the seal of the ax and snake gang.. It happened in 1988. But his serious family situation was above his ideals.

In mid-January, his former partner, an ex-convict whom he met while both were serving sentences in the Picassent prison (Valencia), stabbed the daughter they had fathered twice behind bars.. It was during a weekend that the father, now free, spent with the baby.

Stylianos Messinezis, a 49-year-old Greek drug trafficker of Ethiopian origin, took the girl to his house in Benifaió (Valencia) and left her almost dead there.. He turned himself in to the cops and said that he had killed Izar.. But the little girl, seriously admitted to the La Fe hospital in Valencia, managed to save her life thanks to the intervention of doctors. The couple was in separation proceedings and both were fighting to gain custody.

The Knicks stay alive against Miami thanks to a stellar Brunson

Guided by the 38 points of a tireless Jalen Brunson, the New York Knicks defeated the Miami Heat 112-103 on Wednesday and came close 3-2 in this NBA Eastern Conference semifinal.

Jimmy Butler's Heat, who finished with 19 points and 9 assists, fought until the end to finish off the tie at the emblematic Madison Square Garden and now they will have a second chance on Friday at their court.

In a game of maximum tension, the Knicks withstood the final onslaught of the Heat, who threatened another of their withering comebacks in the playoffs.

Led by Butler and substitute guard Duncan Robinson, who scored 17 points with 5 three-pointers in 22 minutes, the Heat reduced a 19-point deficit in the third quarter to force a tight finish that the locals solved thanks to their success from the off. free throw line.

With the Knicks on the ropes, their coach Tom Thibodeau did not give a minute of rest in the game to their point guard Jalen Brunson, who finished with 38 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists, nor to guard Quentin Grimes (8 points).

The winner of this series will face the winner of the semifinal between the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers, who lead the tie 3-2, in the Eastern Finals.

The playoff day on Wednesday was completed with the fifth game of the West semifinal between the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers, who dominate 3-1.

Bildu. From weapons to the ballot box on 28-M

Covite, the Collective of Victims of Terrorism in the Basque Country, has revealed that Bildu has 44 candidates convicted for their relationship with ETA on their lists for May 28, seven of them have blood crimes on their records. In the podcast En la Sabana we have the assessment of Consuelo Ordóñez. For the president of this group, what happened represents a “worrying qualitative leap” and speaks of an exercise in cynicism on the part of Bildu. “They can no longer hide the symbiosis they have with ETA. It is a provocation that does not happen in any other country.”
This newspaper has also revealed that two ETA members are candidates in the same towns where their victims were murdered.. These are Lander Maruri Basagoiti and Juan Ramon Rojo Gonzalez. With the help of Brais Cedeira, a reporter specializing in Defense, we analyzed their profiles and talked to María Caballero, UPN councilor in the Pamplona council and daughter of Tomás Caballero, mayor appointed by ETA in 1998:”Legally, they are legitimate but not morally”. María recalls her experience in the Pamplona city council: “For a while I had to put up with being with the lawyer for my father's murderers, she entered the lists in the last legislature”, but she points out that despite this situation there is no space for the grudge

Villarejo, about Ferreras: "He is a great professional, although now he denies me like all the Judas"

Juan Manuel Villarejo, former commissioner of the National Police Corps, has attended Congress this Wednesday with a vehement and talkative attitude. Contrary to other occasions, this famous character did not accompany his face with any adornment to appear in a commission of inquiry on the 'Catalonia operation' and other matters of the so-called 'sewers' of the State.

The head in the air, without its characteristic half-sided beret, the eyes without patches and a mouth exposed: no mask. He has shown off that transparency in the same aspect as the unabashed discursive torrent: he introduced jokes in the middle of the questions, he elaborated on his answers, he used sarcasm in the terms…

Nothing in the appearance of this person – who lives in the shadow of the forces of order, with connections in the CNI and the media – has had dark overtones or touches of shame. Villarejo has responded at length since half past six in the afternoon to all those who took the turn and asked questions.

One of them, one of the first, has been Pablo Echenique. The spokesman for Unidas Podemos in the Congress of Deputies has started with an a priori surprising topic: his relationship with two television figures, Antonio García Ferreras and Ana Rosa Quintana. Echenique has asked him about the meetings with the La Sexta journalist and about the papers he published in one of his programs related to an alleged account in the Granadillas islands of the then party leader, Pablo Iglesias.

“Regarding Ferreras, I will tell him that he seems to me a magnificent professional. A man who pretends that he did not know me and with whom I had some meals as people of my interest”, he said, adding: “I clarified to Ferreras that they had deceived him. I don't have a bad opinion of Ferreras, although now he denies me like all the Judas”.

[We can ask the judge to incorporate the audio between Villarejo and Cospedal and those of Ferreras into 'Kitchen']

Ferreras, Echenique replied, “I knew that Granadillas was a lie”. “He says it was very rude. He says that he killed -through the media, of course- Monedero. was not fooled. Gave false information knowing that it was false. Regarding this, I ask you: Do you know who could have manufactured the fake garbage from Granadillas? How is it usual to do these things?” he asked.

And the ironic Villarejo returned: “In all the States of all the governments, and you as a communist will know it, there is a department that is the 'agitprop', agitation and propaganda. You know that at a certain moment the guidelines are established to decide what interests or does not interest. But I insist again: nobody here would put up with a meal or what is spoken in a relaxed way, which often goes out of tune”, he pointed out, since in these talks one sees “pure and hard reality, what it is and what it thinks Spain”.

Villarejo did not have to “defend Ferreras” because “he has not been very affectionate lately”. “And I have told him that he owes me a dinner, that I paid for the last ones”, he has settled, before addressing the next question, about Ana Rosa Quintana and the supposed mediation of the journalist to get some papers that would help her husband, Juan Munoz.

“I've known her since we were single, prehistory!”, he exclaimed, before avoiding whether he was paid 20,000 euros to extort Francisco Urquía, a former judge, with a video accompanied by prostitutes and consuming cocaine. “I see that your lordship has an interest in having me crucified completely. I have no objection to repeating what I said at trial: I do not regret having helped my dear Ana Rosa Quintana. It is not true that they paid me 20,000 euros. It was for the CNI”, has settled.

More than 70% of Lidl's German chicken is contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria

An Equalia NGO analysis carried out on Lidl brand chicken products reveals that 71% of the samples were contaminated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

This study, commissioned by the Albert Schweitzer Foundation and released this Wednesday, examined 51 supermarket products in Germany between January and February this year that were purchased directly from Lidl by laboratory field staff, who strictly respected the supply chain. refrigeration and examined the products immediately.

The report also reveals that these bacteria can affect “everyone,” as resistant germs can spread into the environment through sewage or ventilation systems.

With the aim of putting an end to these potential risks, Equalia ONG leads a European campaign to ask the Lidl supermarket to adhere to the European Chicken Commitment (ECC) to safeguard the health of consumers. In addition, the NGO stresses that this European policy already has the commitment of more than 300 companies to improve food safety and animal welfare.

The data revealed this Wednesday by Equalia on the massive presence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing bacteria in chicken products analyzed in Germany demonstrate the need to reduce the use of antibiotics on farms not only to improve animal welfare, but also to prevent the emergence of these pathogens.

Most of the bacteria (75%) were 'Escherichia coli' and the enzyme ESBL, which renders the bacteria immune to several common antibiotics, was detected in all samples.. The laboratory also found 'Enterococcus' (in 25% of the samples), 'Campylobacter' (18%) and Salmonella (one sample).

With these results, Equalia regretted that bacteria resistant to antibiotics spread and the effectiveness of antibiotics decreases, which causes an increase in their use and favors the growth of resistant bacteria.

“Developing new reserve antibiotics is expensive and takes a long time,” said the NGO, which considered it “urgent” to reduce the use of antibiotics in livestock throughout Europe.. For example, German cattle receive about 670 tons of antibiotics per year, with an average of 88 milligrams of antibiotics per kilogram of meat.. A similar situation occurs in Spain, according to Equalia.

A new step in the fight against pollution: they discover in the Alps and the Arctic microbes that digest plastic at low temperatures

Swiss scientists have identified 19 new strains of specialized cold-adapted bacteria and fungi from the Alps and the Arctic region that can digest biodegradable plastics at 15°C. This capacity, if expanded to an industrial scale, will save money and energy during recycling, as published in the journal 'Frontiers in Microbiology'.

Finding, cultivating, and bioengineering organisms capable of digesting plastic not only helps eliminate pollution, but is now big business as well.. Several microorganisms capable of doing so have already been found, but when the enzymes that make it possible are applied on an industrial scale, they usually only work at temperatures above 30ºC.

The necessary heating makes industrial applications still expensive to date and not carbon neutral, but there is a possible solution to this problem: finding specialized cold-adapted microbes whose enzymes work at lower temperatures.

Scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute WSL searched for such microorganisms at high altitudes in their country's Alps, or in the polar regions.

“Here we demonstrate that novel microbial taxa obtained from the 'plastisphere' of alpine and arctic soils are capable of decomposing biodegradable plastics at 15°C,” says Dr. Joel Rüthi, first author and currently visiting scientist at the WSL-. These organisms could help reduce the costs and environmental burden of an enzymatic plastic recycling process.”

The scientists who demand an international treaty against plastics in the sea: “The oceans do not understand borders”

Rüthi and colleagues sampled 19 strains of bacteria and 15 fungi growing on free or intentionally buried plastic (kept in the ground for a year) in Greenland, Svalbard, and Switzerland.. Most of Svalbard's plastic litter had been collected during the 2018 Swiss Arctic Project, in which students conducted fieldwork to witness first-hand the effects of climate change.. The soil from Switzerland had been collected at the summit of Muot da Barba Peider (2,979 m) and in the Val Lavirun valley, both in the canton of Grisons.

The scientists grew the isolated microbes as monoclonal cultures in the laboratory in the dark at 15°C and used molecular techniques to identify them.. The results showed that the bacterial strains belonged to 13 genera of the 'Actinobacteria' and 'Proteobacteria' phyla, and the fungi to 10 genera of the 'Ascomycota' and 'Mucoromycota' phyla.

They then used a series of assays to test each strain's ability to digest sterile samples of non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable polyester-polyurethane (PUR), as well as two commercially available biodegradable blends of polybutylene adipate terephthalate. (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA).

None of the strains was able to digest the PE, not even after 126 days of incubation in these plastics.. But 19 (56%) of the strains, including 11 fungi and eight bacteria, were able to digest PUR at 15°C, while 14 fungi and three bacteria were able to digest PBAT and PLA plastic mixtures.

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and a fluorescence-based assay confirmed that these strains were capable of cleaving PBAT and PLA polymers into smaller molecules.

“We were very surprised to find that a large part of the strains analyzed was capable of degrading at least one of the plastics tested,” says Rüthi.

The best results were obtained by two uncharacterized fungal species from the genera 'Neodevriesia' and 'Lachnellula', which were able to digest all plastics except PE. The results also showed that the ability to digest plastic was dependent on the culture medium for most of the strains, with each strain reacting differently to each of the four media tested.

Since plastics have only been around since the 1950s, it is almost certain that the ability to degrade plastic was not a trait originally sought by natural selection.

“Microbes have been shown to produce a wide variety of polymer-degrading enzymes that are involved in the breakdown of plant cell walls.. In particular, phytopathogenic fungi often biodegrade polyesters by their ability to produce cutinases, which target plastic polymers because of their resemblance to plant cutin,” explains Dr Beat Frey, study author and WSL group leader.

Since Rüthi and his colleagues only tested digestion at 15 °C, they do not yet know what is the optimal temperature at which the enzymes of the selected strains function.. “But we know that most of the strains tested can grow well between 4°C and 20°C, with an optimum around 15°C,” Frey stresses.

“The next big challenge will be to identify the plastic-degrading enzymes produced by the microbial strains and optimize the process to obtain large amounts of protein -he announces-. Furthermore, further modification of the enzymes might be required to optimize properties such as protein stability.”

Overweight boys are more likely to be infertile men

Boys who are overweight often have a smaller testicular volume, which puts them at risk of infertility in adulthood.

That is the conclusion of a study carried out by seven researchers from the University of Catania (Italy) and published this Wednesday in the 'European Journal of Endocrinology', published by Oxford University Press.

Infertility affects both the psychological health and the economic and social life of people of childbearing age.. This situation affected 48 million couples in 2010.

Although male infertility is often overlooked by observers, researchers believe it contributes to couple infertility in about half of cases.. However, in most of them, the reason for male infertility remains unclear.

According to a German study that evaluated infertility in more than 20,000 male patients referred to a fertility center, a diagnosis could not be made in around 70% of them.. A significant percentage of childless male patients have no explanation for their infertility.

A trend towards decreasing sperm concentration and total sperm count has also been indicated over the past 40 years.. In parallel, the prevalence of childhood obesity has increased worldwide from 32 to 42 million. And it is estimated that 60% of today's children will be obese by the time they are 35 years old.

MORE WEIGHT CARE

Researchers from the University of Catania collected data on testicular volume, age, body mass index, and insulin resistance in 268 boys and adolescents.. They found that boys with normal weight had a testicular volume 1.5 times greater than those who were overweight or obese at peripubertal age.

Boys and adolescents in the study with normal insulin levels had 1.5- to 2-fold greater testicular volume compared with those with hyperinsulinemia, a condition often associated with type 2 diabetes in which patients have higher levels of insulin. insulin in the blood.

Thus, those with overweight or obesity, hyperinsulinemia, or insulin resistance showed lower testicular volume than their healthy peers.. Since lower testicular volume predicts poorer sperm production in later life, the researchers believe that weight loss could help patients avoid infertility in the future.

“Although the prevalence of childhood obesity is increasing worldwide, the impact of obesity and associated metabolic disorders on testicular growth is not well understood,” according to Rossella Cannarella, co-author of the study.

Cannarella concludes that being overweight or obese is associated with a lower peripubertal testicular volume.. “In addition, obesity-related comorbidities such as hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance have been found to influence testicular volume before and after puberty.. Therefore, more careful control of body weight in childhood could represent a preventive strategy to maintain testicular function later in life.”
