Finding, cultivating, and bioengineering organisms capable of digesting plastic not only helps eliminate pollution, but is now big business as well.. Several microorganisms capable of doing so have already been found, but when the enzymes that make it possible are applied on an industrial scale, they usually only work at temperatures above 30ºC.

The necessary heating makes industrial applications still expensive to date and not carbon neutral, but there is a possible solution to this problem: finding specialized cold-adapted microbes whose enzymes work at lower temperatures.

Scientists from the Swiss Federal Institute WSL searched for such microorganisms at high altitudes in their country's Alps, or in the polar regions.

Rüthi and colleagues sampled 19 strains of bacteria and 15 fungi growing on free or intentionally buried plastic (kept in the ground for a year) in Greenland, Svalbard, and Switzerland.. The scientists grew the isolated microbes as monoclonal cultures in the laboratory in the dark at 15°C and used molecular techniques to identify them.. They then used a series of assays to test each strain's ability to digest sterile samples of non-biodegradable polyethylene (PE) and biodegradable polyester-polyurethane (PUR), as well as two commercially available biodegradable blends of polybutylene adipate terephthalate. (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA).

None of the strains was able to digest the PE, not even after 126 days of incubation in these plastics.. But 19 (56%) of the strains, including 11 fungi and eight bacteria, were able to digest PUR at 15°C, while 14 fungi and three bacteria were able to digest PBAT and PLA plastic mixtures.

Since Rüthi and his colleagues only tested digestion at 15 °C, they do not yet know what is the optimal temperature at which the enzymes of the selected strains function.. “But we know that most of the strains tested can grow well between 4°C and 20°C, with an optimum around 15°C,” Frey stresses.

“The next big challenge will be to identify the plastic-degrading enzymes produced by the microbial strains and optimize the process to obtain large amounts of protein -he announces-. El presidente del Gobierno y líder del PSOE, Pedro Sánchez, ha asegurado que es “una nueva victoria de las mujeres y un fracaso de los neoconservadores”.

Esta sentencia ha sido una de las que más ha tardado en aprobarse desde que los magistrados votaran la desestimación del recurso del PP el pasado 9 de febrero. Era, además, el asunto más antiguo aún pendiente en el tribunal, al haber sido admitida durante el Gobierno de Rodríguez Zapatero y recurrida en junio de 2010.

El Partido Popular ha sido la diana. La ministra de Igualdad, Irene Montero, ha reivindicado que el aborto “es un derecho gracias a la lucha feminista y pese al PP”. Montero ha aprovechado la oportunidad para dejar claro que la ley ha salido adelante “pese a las resistencias de la derecha”, de quienes ha lamentado que “nunca retiraran el recurso” de inconstitucionalidad.

El expresidente del Gobierno, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, en un vídeo remitido por el PSOE a los medios de comunicación ha defendido que la proposición de ley impulsada durante su mandato situó a España “en la normalidad europea”. La princesa Leonor comienza la andadura de su formación militar el próximo 17 de agosto, el día en que se incorporará a la Academia General Militar de Zaragoza con el objetivo de iniciar su formación en las Fuerzas Armadas. Un camino que recorrerá del mismo modo que el rey Felipe VI, recorrió antes que ella.

La fecha ya es oficial, una vez que ha aparecido publicada este martes en el Boletín Oficial del Estado (BOE). En tres años, la princesa de Asturias, saldrá de las Fuerzas Armadas con el grado de teniente de Infantería y del Aire, al tiempo que será alférez de navío en la Armada.

Ese será su rango una vez concluya la formación de la carrera militar que comenzará, siguiendo los pasos de su padre, al finalizar sus estudios de bachiller en Gales.

El plan que el Gobierno ha diseñado para ella reportará a la heredera al trono conocimientos de los tres Ejércitos que conforman las Fuerzas Armadas: de topografía, a pilotaje de aviones, defensa NRBQ (explosivos), o tripulación de navío.

En la Academia Militar de Zaragoza lo normal es que a los alumnos se les impartan dos años de adiestramiento, pero ella tan solo cursará uno. Recibirá formación en asignaturas como Formación Militar, Táctica y Logística, Sistema de Armas, Defensa NRBQ , Topografía, Liderazgo, Derecho o Historia del Ejército.

Al igual que hizo su padre hace décadas, se enrolará en el buque escuela Juan Sebastián Elcano. Embarcada en esa dotación dará la vuelta al mundo, recibirá clases, participará en las maniobras y realizará las tareas que le toquen conviviendo intensamente con sus compañeros.

Su tercer curso será el 2025-2026. En este caso tendrá que ingresar en la Academia General del Aire de San Javier, en Murcia, perteneciente al Ejército del Aire y el Espacio. Entre las nociones básicas que aprenderá está la del vuelo en naves de combate.

Tomará clases en las que realizará horas de vuelo para completar su formación militar. En esos tres años, la princesa de Asturias irá ascendiendo conforme lo haga su promoción, aunque no ocupará plaza como tal.

La Casa Real ya dio un informe favorable a lo que aprobó hace semanas el Consejo de Ministros. El deseo de Felipe VI era que la formación de su primogénita “se hiciera de la forma más rápida posible” y el Gobierno entendía que el calendario fijado resulta “una magnífica noticia, que pone de relieve el funcionamiento normal de las instituciones”.

Es el primer paso para que en un futuro sea una mujer quien desempeñe el “mando supremo de las Fuerzas Armadas”, lo que refuerza la intención del Gobierno de “incorporar a las mujeres a las Fuerzas Armadas”.

Al menos siete militares han resultado heridos a primera hora de la tarde de este martes, cinco de ellos de carácter leve, en el desarrollo de un ejercicio que se realizaba en el campo de maniobras de la base militar ‘Álvarez de Sotomayor’ de Viator (Almería).

Según informan a EL ESPAÑOL fuentes del Estado Mayor de la Defensa, el episodio en el que salieron heridos los soldados se produjo en torno a las 13 horas, durante la práctica de una de las actividades previstas del ejercicio ‘COPEX 23’.

En él  están desplegados alrededor de 4.000 militares del Ejército de Tierra, la Armada y el Ejército del Aire y del Espacio en diferentes puntos de la geografía española.

En ese momento, un BMR (acrónimo de Blindado Medio sobre Ruedas) ha sufrido un accidente. El vehículo volcó cuando viajaban 11 personas en su interior, 7 de las cuales han resultado heridas.

Los heridos han sido trasladados al Hospital Universitario Torrecárdenas de Almería. En este momento, recalcan las mismas fuentes, uno ya ha sido dado de alta y 6 se encuentran en observación en el servicio de urgencias del mencionado hospital con evolución favorable, aunque siguen pendientes de pruebas complementarias.

Qué es el COPEX 23

El COPEX 23 es el principal ejercicio conjunto de puestos de mando de nivel operacional y táctico con su fase de despliegue real de unidades en el terreno, y con activación de la estructura operativa que integra a los Mandos Componentes de Tierra (MCT), Marítimo (MCM), Aeroespacial (JFAC), Operaciones Especiales (MCOE) y Ciberespacio (MCC). Este ejercicio es la principal actividad nacional de adiestramiento de la Fuerza Conjunta de 2023.

Su objetivo es adiestrar y poner a prueba la capacidad del Mando de Operaciones (MOPS) para ejercer el mando y control sobre estos Mandos Componentes, con la dirección desde el Puesto de Mando del Jefe de Estado Mayor de la Defensa (JEMAD). Asimismo, los Mandos Componentes cuentan por primera vez con unidades subordinadas reales desplegadas en distintos campos de maniobras, zonas marítimas y bases aéreas.
