NATO put Spanish fighters on high alert after the incident with a Russian Su-35 in the Black Sea

NATO sources have confirmed that last Friday Spanish fighters stationed in Romania were put on alert after the incident involving a Russian Su-35 fighter-bomber and a plane from the EU border control agency, Frontex, which briefly lost control. control after a dangerous maneuver of the Russian apparatus.

“The units placed on alert were Spanish aircraft assigned to our enhanced air surveillance mission for Romania,” a NATO spokesman explained.. The source recalled that NATO has allocated additional resources for the surveillance of the eastern borders as a result of the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014..

In particular, NATO air surveillance forces have been strengthened in the Baltic countries, it has sent aircraft to Poland and the surveillance capacity of the Bulgarian and Romanian air forces has been increased..

On Friday, a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jet came dangerously close to a Polish L-410 Turbolet aircraft conducting a patrol for Frontex in international airspace in the Romanian deployment region, the Polish border protection agency has denounced..

The agency accused the Russian fighter jet of carrying out “aggressive and dangerous maneuvers”, approaching the L-410 on three occasions at a distance of just five meters.. As a result, the crew temporarily lost control of the turboprop..

The Let, with two pilots and three border protection officers on board, ended up losing altitude but was able to land safely thanks to the skill and “great composure” of the pilots.. Russian planes have repeatedly approached EU and NATO planes over the Black Sea since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, sometimes leading to dangerous situations.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake shakes the waters of Tonga in the South Pacific

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook the waters of the Tonga archipelago in the South Pacific on Wednesday, without a tsunami warning having been issued.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records seismic activity around the world, has located the tremor at a depth of 210 kilometers below the seabed.

The shock occurred at 5:00 am (4:00 pm GMT on Wednesday) and 95 kilometers west of the city of Hihifo, on the island of Niuatoputapu, and 660 kilometers northwest of Nuku'alufa, the capital of Tonga.

The Pacific Tsunami Alert Center has not issued any alarm for the risk of a giant wave.

Tonga is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the areas of the planet with the greatest seismic activity and where tremors of different intensity occur daily.

Why Europe Day is celebrated: its curious origin related to coal and steel

Europe Day is celebrated on May 9, a date that has gained importance over the years within the European Union: in fact, the European Parliament approved an initiative in 2019 to make it a holiday in their countries members, although it was not binding and for the moment it has not become effective, so this day continues to be a working day. The promoter of that text was a Spanish MEP: Maite Pagazaurtundúa, who at that time was part of UPyD.

In any case, and as is logical, Pagazaurtundúa did not randomly choose the date of May 9 for his proposal.. It had already been commemorating, to a greater or lesser extent, since in 1985 the heads of State and Government approved his election at the European Council. And the truth is that it is a very symbolic date to honor the legacy of the European spirit and celebrate the feeling that gave rise to its desire for unity.

Schuman, the great promoter

May 9 commemorates the important and conciliatory speech known as the 'Schuman Declaration', which was delivered by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs on this date in 1950, when the Second World War was still recent and had traumatized all of Europe.. This declaration is considered the founding event of the European Union, because in it the French minister Robert Schuman proposed that the coal and steel of his country and Germany be submitted to a joint administration, which established the foundations of European unity..

After a very bloody war that had left more than 50 million dead, there were important voices in Europe that sought a more united continent to avoid future divisions and conflicts.. One of them was that of Robert Schuman: his father was from Lorraine, a territory that changed hands between the French and Germans during various conflicts, while his mother was from Luxembourg, where Schuman was born and raised.. Later he lived in various places in Germany until he settled in Metz (Lorraine), which after the First World War became part of France, whose nationality he acquired.

He participated in the resistance against the Nazi occupation of France in World War II, and after the conflict he became one of the most prominent political figures in the country.. He always sought conciliation with Germany, which had been defeated in the war, and wanted to work with the country that had been an enemy of France to build a better future.. The plan to unite the coal and steel production of the two countries was initially developed in secret by one of his collaborators in the French government, the general commissioner of the modernization and equipment plan Jean Monnet.. Schuman supported the project and saw it as an opportunity to lay the foundations for a united Europe.. On May 9, 1950, he gave his famous speech, known as the 'Schuman Declaration'.

“A united Europe was not achieved, and we had the war,” Schuman laments in his speech, but at the same time he was optimistic about the future that they could sow, while acknowledging that “Europe will not be made suddenly”. “It will be built through concrete achievements that first create de facto solidarity,” he stated, to then announce that first milestone with which he intended to start the development of a continental community: “the French government proposes that the Franco-German production of coal and steel be placed together under a common High Authority”.

This vision came true the following year with the Treaty of Paris (1951).. Not only France and West Germany signed that agreement, but also Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands; This is how “the six” were established, the founding countries of what would later be known as the European Union. That treaty formed the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), putting into practice the concept proposed by Schuman throughout several European countries.. Later, between 1958 and 1960, Robert Schuman himself became the first president of the European Parliamentary Assembly, the body that would later be renamed the European Parliament. Currently, the European Union includes 27 member countries; Spain joined in 1986, when it was known as the European Economic Community.

Podemos, also against Sánchez for the drought decree: "Look for another issue after messing with the house"

The ministers of Unidas Podemos found out yesterday from the press that they would have plans this morning. After Pedro Sánchez took a surprise program of guarantees from the Official Credit Institute (ICO) to the last Council of Ministers, the President of the Government announced another meeting of the body this Thursday to approve a new extraordinary decree against drought. In the eyes of the purple formation, one urgency cannot be understood without the other.

The announcement of the ICO credits met with immediate opposition from the Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, who accused Sánchez of “fomenting the mortgage spiral”, and from the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz, who made ugly the “expired proposal […] unfair and ineffective” of its partners. The allies of the investiture were not left behind and the PSOE found itself, overnight, without allies to its left and with the only endorsement of PP and Vox.

“If he had such urgency for a new decree for the drought, he could have carried it in hand on Tuesday,” clarify sources from the leadership of Podemos. “What he is doing is bringing up another topic after having messed it up with the house,” they add after a week fraught with criticism for water management.

[Pedro Sánchez announces labor regulations against heat without consulting the employer or unions]

The reflection goes far beyond the credits of the ICO, which is still the tip of the iceberg of a communication policy that annoys partners and opposition alike. In recent weeks, the PSOE's modus operandi has been to announce —by surprise and at party rallies— new actions and decrees, the majority on housing, and inflate the pre-campaign two weeks before 28-M.

A climate shield

The opinion of the purples did not improve once the content of the decree was known. Late on Wednesday, Ione Belarra sent the PSOE through official channels a series of “contributions” to activate, also urgently and during the same Council of Ministers, a climate shield similar to the one designed to deal with the consequences of the pandemic and the Ukrainian war.

Party sources confirm that, among the proposed measures, is launching a network of mandatory climate shelters in all cities, “keeping public libraries and cultural centers open” or prohibiting the felling of trees in these spaces.. In addition, it proposes “to guarantee that residences, nursery schools and care centers for vulnerable populations have sufficient means to maintain an adequate temperature.”

“In this legislature we have shown that crises can be managed from the Government in a different way, without leaving anyone behind. In the face of unexpected crises, such as the pandemic, the war in Ukraine or heat waves, the Government must implement ambitious social measures such as those that Podemos is once again proposing,” they explained from the formation.

[Pedro Sánchez starts the campaign with an extraordinary Council to launch measures against the drought]

The world against the PSOE

The context could not be more damaging for the Socialists, isolated by the left to their left in Congress and put on the ropes by the Bank of Spain, which this Wednesday issued a harsh report against the Housing Law and all the measures that Sánchez has announced over the past month. With this amendment at the gates of the elections, the PSOE turns the page.

At least, this is also explained by sources from different parties of the investiture bloc consulted by this newspaper, who agree that Sánchez's “baroque style” with his ads has forced him to modify his agenda, after seeing his speech on the living place.

In the last three weeks alone, the trickle of surprise measures has been incessant: 50,000 Sareb homes for social and affordable rental; another 4,000 million from the ICO for the construction and rehabilitation of 43,000 homes; the construction of 20,000 public houses on land belonging to the Ministry of Defense; and now the guarantees for young people who want to access a mortgage.

In the Moncloa, for the moment, they do not rectify. Although de jure the coalition government continues, the reality is that the president does and undoes as he pleases, announces with his times and executes with his signature directly in the Council, without going through the commission of secretaries of state and before the rejection of five of its 22 ministers, who bow their heads every Tuesday with each new decree.

As EL ESPAÑOL already announced, Sánchez's plan does not change. Government sources assure that this dynamic will continue to be repeated between now and the municipal and autonomic elections of May 28 and, even more, it will be repeated again in the run-up to the general elections in December.

The return of the social Fridays, of the extraordinary Councils and of the surprise announcements. All of this with part of the government against it.

Isabel Rodríguez takes 2 warnings and 2 disciplinary files from the JEC in 4 Councils of Ministers

Four Councils of Ministers and four pronouncements. Two warnings and two files. The work with Isabel Rodríguez is accumulating to the Central Electoral Board, to which a new sanctioning file was initiated again this Wednesday for her press conference on May 3 at the Moncloa palace.

The government spokesperson failed for the fourth time in a row with her duty of neutrality during the electoral period. He did so by accusing the Popular Party of being “anti-system”, in reference to the controversial participation of Minister Bolaños in the acts of Dos de Mayo, Day of the Community of Madrid.

In its resolution, the JEC ruled that the manifestations of the also Minister of Territorial Policy in the aforementioned appearance “allegedly violated the prohibition that stems” from the Electoral Law, which prevents the Executive from exhibiting its achievements or criticizing the opposition in public spaces.

[The Electoral Board files on the spokesperson and the Government defends its right to criticize the PP]

For the Popular Party, which has denounced the spokesperson, this case is a “living example of what sanchismo is”. Sources from the national training directorate criticize EL ESPAÑOL that the consecutive warnings and the two disciplinary proceedings are “more than recidivism”. And they add: “They want to be above the Law.”

The PP's warning

In Genoa they are clear: “The law is the same for everyone and we will make the socialists comply with it. Institutions, such as the JEC, resist sanchismo defending the rules of the game in electoral processes. We will continue to report all violations.”

From Moncloa they already defended, in statements to this newspaper, that “during question time”, the spokeswoman can answer the PP   “when just asked for an assessment”. “Not responding to the PP would be an evident inequality of arms of the Government before the opposition party,” they reproached.

This institutional pulse between the Government and the opposition, always recurring in the electoral period, will continue until 28-M. The popular ones censor the partisan use of the press conferences in the Moncloa, while the Government defends the right to react to criticism from the opposition and to answer questions from journalists. Also in electoral period.

The PP filed its first complaint after the first press conference after the decree calling for the municipal and regional elections was signed, on April 4. Then, the claim was already estimated and the minister was warned.

The second occasion took place on April 18, when the JEC estimated the offensive of the popular with new warning. The third time, on April 25, the first file arrived and a warning also to   Teresa Ribera, third vice president of the Government. Now, Rodríguez adds a fourth reproach for his words on May 3 and a second file.

If the sanctions are successful, the spokesperson for the Executive could face the payment of up to 6,000 euros. According to the Electoral Law, “any infraction of the established obligatory norms that does not constitute a crime, will be sanctioned by the Competent Electoral Board. The fine will be between 300 and 3,000 euros if they are authorities or officials.”

Chacho, Llull and Rudy and the most amazing of the 'old school' comebacks: "They are the ones who transmit how this works"

It could well have been a picture from a decade ago, of those conquests in full, in white or red, of a trio that, who would have said it, still had another epic night up their sleeves.. The photo of the tweet with which Luka Doncic surrendered to his teachers. The penultimate dance of Rudy, Llull and El Chacho, showcases full of hits but the hunger of those who are never satisfied. They believed when all was lost and to their wisdom the Wizink climbed to be where Real Madrid is supposed to be, in the ninth Final Four of the last 12: at the Zalgirio Arena in Kaunas, Sabonis' land, they will look for the Eleventh.

Chacho's penultimate mission and a harangue in Belgrade to change everything

Florentino Pérez smiled in the bowels of the Palace after visiting a euphoric changing room. Chus Mateo, who has suffered the suffering of someone who begins his work with everything against it, was accompanied in the press room by his three assistants. “Here, here, in the front row,” he ordered Lolo Calin, Paco Redondo and Guillermo Frutos. The white technician's face was one of pure relief, his eloquence that of someone who finally achieves happiness.. He began his speech with three devastating sentences: “Sports sometimes do not have logical explanations. The heart makes impossible things possible. The players give us lessons every day.”

'Chacho' Rodríguez and Llul after the epic victory: “It's a magical night”

A while before, the WiZink shouted “Chacho, Chacho!”. As in those 2012 semifinals against Baskonia in which the Canarian base took off to never be earthly again. In Belgrade he had starred in the resurrection of Madrid, the leader in the mood with that harangue in the third when everything was as lost as last night, as on the track in the fourth. What perhaps he himself did not expect was that burst of basketball, the triples, the penetrations, the assists…. He hadn't scored 19 points all season. When he entered the court in the third quarter, with 13:22 to go, Madrid was reeling 16 down (56-72). Quick an assist, a triple…. A handle for the final act, the one that followed with one of the greatest recitals of his career. “The comeback is something we had in mind since we returned from Belgrade. We didn't want to be the first team to lose a fifth game at home. At first the desire was able to us, but in the third quarter the emotions have changed, “he confessed.

But in that ecstasy nothing would have been possible for Real Madrid if Chacho hadn't found accomplices. And, with Tavares weighed down by fouls (he still finished with 12 points and seven rebounds), who better than his old cronies?. In addition to Dzanan Musa, who finished with 20 points, Sergio Llull and Rudy Fernández put their laurels into green for one of those nights of rock and roll that they love so much. “They are the ones who guide and transmit to young people how this works. Chacho has been brutal in attack, Llull has defended Punter like nobody else, he has ended up eating him. And Rudy has been superb in the defensive readings”, Chus Mateo praised them.

Because if El Chacho was the hero, the triples in Llull's outcome were as decisive as his defense against a Punter who, as Obradovic acknowledged, “missed the key shots”. These are not easy times for the Menorcan. Back after the umpteenth injury, he did not participate in the first game of the series and in the second he was the protagonist for bad, wick with his harsh foul of the subsequent fight. He was not sanctioned, but he did not shine in the white triumphs in Belgrade either. He had not scored a basket until the last quarter, there where the balls never burn: he finished with eight points.

JUANJO MARTIN EFE

Nor did Rudy need to score, again the residue of wisdom, playing four when necessary, glue from the area with which Mateo tortured Obradovic again. And, as always, leaving the physical: Exum fell badly on him in the last seconds of the third quarter.

All this, this paralysis that Real Madrid causes in the rival, was summed up by an Obradovic who was at the gates of his 19th Final Four: only in 2006 (with Panathinaikos against Baskonia) had he lost a tie. “Madrid is a great team and has a lot of character”, he acknowledged and spoke about the permanent notice to his pupils, even when they won by 18: “I never take the game for granted. In each timeout I have told him: “You have to play until the end”. We defended badly in the second half and the team is sunk in the dressing room”.

It was an impossible night at WiZink. Madrid raised, for the first time in the history of the Euroleague, a 0-2. He did it conceding 94 points (55 at halftime) and breaking the trend that said that, at more than 80, he did not beat Partizan. And he left the Serbs without their first Final Four in 13 years to meet Barça in Kaunas. He will do it without Deck or Yabusele, but that will be another story…

Villarejo says that the 'Zaplana case' was "a CNI operation", which "used the Civil Guard"

The retired commissioner José Manuel Villarejo has assured this Wednesday in the Congress of Deputies that the Zaplana case was “a CNI operation” against the former president of the Generalitat and minister of the Aznar government, Eduardo Zaplana.

In his new appearance before the Kitchen commission of Congress, Villarejo has also indicated the hand of the National Intelligence Center (CNI) after the intervention of the Banca Privada d'Andorra (for which Mariano Rajoy is being investigated in a Court of the Principality) and It has been confirmed that the Gürtel case was “a political operation, which went very well for the PSOE”.

“Thanks to Rubalcaba, he did not get any further, because he did not want to destroy his party [PP], but only to weaken it a bit,” the commissioner added, addressing the people's deputy Luis Santamaría.

[The CNI used “a Syrian confidant” to “destroy Eduardo Zaplana,” according to Villarejo]

Already in his appearance in October 2021, Commissioner Villarejo assured that the CNI used a Syrian confidant to “destroy” the former minister and former president of the Valencian Generalitat Eduardo Zaplana.

He was alluding to the Syrian citizen Al Naddaf Yaloud Imad, who allegedly found in an attic of the house he had rented (where Zaplana had lived several years before) several typed pages detailing the mechanics of collecting illegal commissions from the former leader of the PP.

This document, the origin of which has never been fully clarified, became the main prosecution evidence to prosecute Zaplana in the Erial case, for the alleged collection of commissions in the ITV awards and the Sedesa group's wind plan (linked to to the family of Juan Cotino).

Commissioner Villarejo has ratified this Wednesday in pointing, once again, to the National Intelligence Center (CNI) as responsible for the operation. “For delicate operations, the CNI has never trusted the Police, it has always used the Civil Guard,” he said in this regard.

[Mariano Rajoy, charged in Andorra for alleged coercion to obtain Pujol's bank details]

According to Villarejo, the CNI gave the appropriate “instructions” to Civil Guard Colonel Manuel Sánchez Corbí, then head of the Central Operating Unit (UCO).. “It has been proven, some of the conversations that Corbí has with me have come out,” he added.

The retired commissioner, the main defendant in the Tandem operation, has indicated at the parliamentary headquarters that “the same procedure” was used (the action of the Civil Guard following the “instructions” of the CNI) to provoke the intervention of the Banca Privada d' Andorra (BPA) and its Spanish subsidiary Banco Madrid, with an alert from the US financial authorities (FinCEN) for alleged money laundering.

An Andorran judge has been investigating the former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his Interior and Finance Ministers, Jorge Fernández Díaz and Cristóbal Montoro, for allegedly “extorting” the owners of Banca Privada d'Andorra (BPA) since last June. ) to obtain information on deposits of the Pujol family and other pro-independence leaders.

The Andorran judge sent a letter rogatory to Spain to notify the complaint of the Cierco family to Rajoy, Fernández Díaz and Montoro. However, the Provincial Court of Madrid attended an appeal by Mariano Rajoy last October and paralyzed the sending of documentation to the Andorran judge, for alleged violation of procedural guarantees.

The drought that devastates the Pyrénées-Orientales: it is forbidden to buy plastic pools, wash the car or water the garden

The drought is not only affecting our country this year, France is also suffering from one of the biggest water shortages in its history. Four departments have already declared extreme drought alert and many are imposing very restrictive measures to try to combat it.

Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard and Var were the first departments to activate the alert and as of May 10, the Pyrénées-Orientales, a region adjacent to Catalonia, which reaches the Mediterranean beaches, have joined. So extreme is the situation due to the low level of rivers, reservoirs and groundwater that the French Minister of the Environment, Christophe Béchu, has ordered that forceful measures be taken.

“In the Eastern Pyrenees we have not seen a single full day of rain for a year. In the face of a crisis like this -he added-, things are very simple: water is for drinking and for nothing else”.

And the prefecture has taken it to the letter since it has tightened the restrictions on agricultural irrigation and prohibited the use of spas, the watering of orchards and green spaces, the filling of private pools and even the purchase of plastic pools.

On golf courses, irrigation is only allowed from 8:00 p.m. to 02:00 a.m., if the water comes from a reuse system, and car washing is only allowed at stations where 70% of the water is recycled. water.

The restrictions, ordered for the moment until June 13, affect the Agly and Têt hydrographic basins, the two main rivers of Roussillon, where agricultural activity is concentrated, as well as the aquifers of Aspres, a mountainous area, and the mediterranean coastline. where the spas of Argelès-sur-Mer, Collioure or Canet-en-Roussillon are located. On the beaches, the operation of showers is prohibited.

Visiting the Pyrénées-Orientales, the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau, tried to reassure farmers by promising compensation for the losses suffered due to the exceptional drought. “It is a crisis situation like that of Covid. We will cover crop loss or loss of funds,” he announced, referring to tree growers who will likely lose not only their crop but also their trees.
