Projectile kills eight people and wounds three in southeastern Pakistan

At least eight people, including four children, have died after a rocket launcher projectile exploded inside a house in a rural area in the province of Sindh, in southeastern Pakistan, according to official sources.

In addition, three other people were injured.. Apparently, all the victims belonged to the same family.

“Eight people, including four children, three women and a man, were killed when a rocket launcher shell exploded in a house,” said Kashmore Senior Superintendent of Police Rohail Khoso.

It has not been an isolated event

“According to the initial investigation, the children found a rocket casing while playing outside and brought it home, where it exploded,” the official added.

Sindh Acting Chief Minister of Justice Maqbool Baqar asked authorities for a report on how a rocket launcher projectile reached the village.

This is not the first incident in Pakistan in which children playing with grenades or similar weapons have lost their lives.

It was last April when three other children died while playing with another explosive device, in this case in the Chaman district, in the province of Balochistan. The same month, a farmer was killed when a grenade he was playing with exploded in the same area.

Russia publishes new video of Black Sea Fleet commander to prove he is alive

The commander of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, Victor Sokolov, who Ukraine had presumed dead in an attack against Sevastopol, assured in new images published this Wednesday that the Navy division he leads “safely and successfully fulfills” its tasks.

“Surface ships, submarine forces, naval aviation and coastal troops are successfully fulfilling their missions. “You know that the exploits of our marines practically never leave the television screen,” Sokolov said in a video published by the Defense Ministry's television channel, “Zvezda.”

Despite this, it has not been possible to prove that the images are current and several analysts affirm that it is still strange that the video does not comment on current events or the attacks last week for which Ukraine left you for dead.

Already on Tuesday Sokolov reappeared in images released by the Ministry of Defense on its Telegram channel. In them he was seen on a large screen supposedly participating in a meeting chaired by the head of this portfolio, Sergei Shoigu, with senior military commanders.

The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces reported on Monday the death of Sokolov and 33 other soldiers as a result of the missile attack that Ukraine launched against the headquarters of the General Staff of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

After reappearing in the Defense video, these same forces insisted that their sources place the fleet commander among the 34 soldiers killed in the bombing.

The Police put the president of the real estate company Evergrande under house arrest

The Chinese authorities have placed the president of the real estate developer Evergrande, Hui Ka Yan, under house arrest, as reported this Wednesday by sources with knowledge of the matter consulted by Bloomberg.

Thus, the manager is being monitored after having already been requested by the police earlier this month.. In this sense, the legislation of the Asian “giant” provides that the incommunicado regime and the delivery to the authorities of the passport and DNI do not exceed a period of six months.

However, the reasons for such measures have not been revealed, since he has not been formally detained nor have charges been brought against him.

“I couldn't meet the requirements”

These measures follow the announcement just a few days ago that Evergrande “could not meet the requirements” for the issuance of new notes because one of its main subsidiaries, Hengda Real Estate, was under investigation.

The news shook the promoter's shares on the stock market, which fell 20% of the price at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, down to 0.44 Hong Kong dollars (0.052 euros).. The shares of the Asian company fell by 24% in the session, dragging down other real estate companies, such as Country Garden (-8.6%) and Hang Seng itself, the main indicator of Hong Kong, which lost 1.6 %.

Likewise, last week several Evergrande Wealth employees were arrested just a month after declaring bankruptcy in the United States.. The company then assured that the arrests “would not affect its operations.”

According to the police in Shenzhen, in the southern province of Guangdong and where the real estate group is based, among those detained was a person surnamed Du, which could refer to Du Liang, CEO of Evergrande Wealth.

The arrest of Evergrande Wealth workers came two weeks after the group again defaulted on payments for its investment products.. However, the police asked the population to report suspicions of fraud through the internet, telephone, messages or email.

A 4.2 magnitude earthquake shakes the province of Naples, southern Italy

An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 shook the area of the Phlegraean Fields, in the province of Naples, in southern Italy, early this Wednesday.. It is the highest intensity earthquake in recent weeks in this volcanic area, where the tremors have intensified in recent weeks and, although it was clearly warned by the population, it has not caused damage.

The earthquake, the strongest of several that occurred during the night, was recorded at 3:35 a.m. and its epicenter was located at a depth of 3 kilometers, being clearly felt in several neighborhoods of Naples, as well as in nearby municipalities such as Pozzuoli and Bacoli, according to the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Many were awakened, especially in the Neapolitan neighborhoods of Fuorigrotta, Vomero, the Chiaia Riviera and Capodimonte by the tremor, which lasted several seconds, as well as by car and shop alarms that were activated, but Civil Protection reported that no They have reported damage.

After the earthquake, train circulation to and from the Neapolitan capital was suspended as a precaution for track control, but was later reactivated.

Also some mayors of localities in the area have decided to close schools this Wednesday as a precaution, as in Pozzuoli.

“We are all awake. I am in constant contact with Civil Protection and the INGV. The earthquake was strong and I have already carried out checks on the school buildings to check if there is damage and that is why we are preparing an order to suspend teaching activities, we will need a few hours for the checks,” wrote the mayor of that town, Luigi Manzoni, on their social networks.

The intensification of the earthquake phenomenon in this area located on an ancient volcano in the Gulf of Pozzuoli, most of which is under water, has worried the population of nearly 500,000 people.

However, the head of Civil Protection, Fabrizio Curcio, explained that although this area “is yellow risk and therefore the monitoring system is high, at the moment there are no imminent crises, although there are a series of seismic activities at surface level, which are clearly perceived by the inhabitants”.

They publish audios that prove the participation of a drug trafficker's wife in Petro's campaign

Noticias Caracol has published this Tuesday a series of audios that could be proof of the contribution of drug trafficking to Gustavo Petro's presidential campaign. These are conversations between Sandra Navarro, wife of drug trafficker Juan Carlos López, who shows that she supported logistically and contributed money to the promotion of Petro in the Colombian department of Casanare (eastern part of the country).

This is clear from an investigation by the Colombian news, in which audios of conversations intercepted by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Police and the Prosecutor's Office were published.

In one of them – between Navarro and Sonia Bernal, who was a congressional candidate for the leftist coalition Historic Pact and today works as deputy director of Government, Territorial Management and Fight against Trafficking of the Ministry of the Interior – the women discuss an amount of money that the former will leave for the campaign in a place known as “Casa Petro” in Yopal, capital of Casanare.

The audios also show how the drug trafficker's wife lent vehicles to transport former senator Gustavo Bolívar, who is today a candidate for Mayor of Bogotá; the vice president, Francia Márquez, or the congresswoman Katherine Miranda at campaign events in Casanare.

Likewise, the investigation reveals that Navarro collaborated with Petro's campaign in Casanare for at least six months, during which he even showed his annoyance at the number of favors they asked of him.

This report is a complement to the one presented on August 13 in which Noticias Caracol revealed that even a Petro campaign event was held at the house of López, known by the alias “Sobrino” and who after paying a fine in the United States for drug trafficking he was also convicted in Colombia.

López, a repeat criminal

Drug trafficker López was arrested again in June last year, just a few days after Petro won the elections, as the leader of a criminal gang.

This whole case has become known after Nicolás Petro Burgos, the first-born son of the head of state, acknowledged before the Prosecutor's Office that he received money of illicit origin and that part of it supposedly entered Petro's presidential campaign in 2022, although he clarified that his father I didn't know.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) must investigate whether that money was registered by Petro's presidential campaign and, in this way, determine whether the then candidate knew or not.

The Prosecutor's Office presented an accusation of illicit enrichment and money laundering against the president's son on Monday, for which he will go to trial.

They leave seven bodies and five packages with human remains in the streets of the city of Monterrey, in Mexico

This Tuesday, alleged members of organized crime left the bodies of seven people and five packages with human remains in the streets of the metropolitan area of Monterrey, the second most populated city in Mexico and the largest in the north of the country.

The Attorney General's Office of the State of Nuevo León, bordering the United States, has reported the appearance of the bodies, which correspond to men.

Given the events, the Government of Nuevo León has organized an urgent security meeting, after which the state Security Secretary, Gerardo Palacios Pámanes, has attributed the events to a “purge” within a criminal group.

“What we shared and visualized was a purge within an organized crime group that has its main residence in Tamaulipas (neighboring state),” said Palacios Pámanes.

The official has stressed that apparently the events are linked to “disloyalties” within the same group.

In the same meeting, the acting state prosecutor, Pedro Arce, has established that they will ask the municipalities to provide the material from the surveillance cameras in the areas of the findings for the investigations of the events.

“Municipalities will be asked to share the videos with us so that experts in the matter can analyze the precise moments in which the bodies were left,” he said.

In an interview with the media, the deputy prosecutor of the Public Ministry, Luis Enrique Orozco, stated that the first report of the events was received at 6:45 a.m. (12:45 GMT) and the last before 8:45 a.m. (14 :45 GMT).

“There is relative coherence in the distribution of these remains, so the possibility could be assumed that they had traced a route to deposit the remains,” he explained.

Gang violence returns

He has also recognized that such bloody events had not been seen in Nuevo León for a long time, when the federal government declared the so-called “war on drug trafficking.”

He added that at least in the last five years there is no record of events in this number.

“In the bloodiest time 10 or 12 years ago there were similar acts, in this volume I do not remember in the recent past,” he commented.

The municipalities where the events were recorded are San Nicolás, Juárez, Apodaca, García, Santa Catarina and Monterrey.

The Nuevo León Attorney General's Office has warned that the information corresponding to the number of bodies is preliminary because the work and investigations are still ongoing.

In recent months, the level of violence by organized crime groups has worsened in Nuevo León, which ranks tenth in absolute homicides in the country, registering 842 in the first eight months of 2023, when Mexico in general reported more than 20,000.

Judge finds Trump liable for fraud in civil case involving his New York company

A judge has declared former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021) responsible for one count of fraud in the civil process promoted by the New York State Prosecutor's Office, which accused him of inflating his company's assets for years to obtain better conditions on loans and other economic benefits.

The decision was issued this Tuesday afternoon, Judge Arthur Engoron agreed with the Prosecutor's Office, which last week requested a partial summary judgment on the main charge in the case, that of fraud against Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric, the Trump Organization and various associates, leaving six other crimes to be resolved in the trial scheduled for October 2.

Antarctic ice marks a historic minimum with the smallest extent recorded in 40 years

The extent of Antarctic ice this southern winter has been 16.96 million square kilometers, the smallest recorded in more than four decades, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) of the United States.

The agency stresses that there is some concern that this could be the start of a long-term trend of declining Antarctic sea ice, “as oceans are warming globally and warm water mixing in the polar cap of the Southern Ocean could continue.” “.

The NSIDC, which depends on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), explains that this extension reached on September 10 was 1.03 million square kilometers smaller than the previous record in the winter of 1986.

Likewise, data collected by satellite since 1979 show that sea ice in the winter of 2023 extended 1.75 million square kilometers less than the average maximum extent from 1981 to 2010.

This is the first time, since this record has been kept, that it was below 17 million square kilometers and one of the earliest, having occurred 13 days before the average date between 1981 and 2010, which was December 23. September. “This year is really different,” says NSIDC's Ted Scambos. “It's a very sudden change.”

The report adds that “the extent of sea ice is notably smaller north of Queen Maud Land and west of the Antarctic Peninsula.” Other areas with lower coverage include the Indian Ocean and the Ross Sea, while sea ice extent was above average in the Admunsen Sea.

Controversial statements by the British Home Secretary: she maintains that being gay and being persecuted "is not enough" to request asylum

The British Interior Minister, Suella Braverman, defended this Tuesday that being homosexual and being persecuted for it “is not enough” to receive asylum, which is why she has demanded a change in immigration policies in the face of the dynamics of “bad integration.” ” and “multiculturalism” that, according to her, have damaged Europe “in recent decades.”

“We will not be able to take charge of an asylum system if simply the fact of being gay or a woman and being able to suffer discrimination in the country of origin is enough to have the right to protection,” he indicated during a speech before an American think tank, according to picked up by the BBC.

Regarding immigration, Braverman has assured that this is “a challenge” for Western institutions. “Inadequate integration and the dogma of multiculturalism have proven to be a toxic combination for Europe in recent decades,” he asserted.

Likewise, he highlighted that multiculturalism has allowed the migrant to “live a parallel life” to the society of the destination countries, even going so far as to “undermine stability and threaten security.”. “National identity is not something that was invented in an ivory tower or by advertising executives,” he stated.

Defense of “patriotism”

“If people are not able to settle in our countries and begin to consider themselves British, American, French or German, then something is very wrong,” said Braverman, who wanted to vindicate “patriotism” against multiculturalism, as reported. the Sky News network.

Asked about her origins after her speech, Braverman defended her position regarding the immigration issue.. “What you are suggesting is that since I am the daughter of immigrants I have to adopt a position in favor of immigration and I categorically reject that,” she said.

Braverman already stated in October 2022 that his “dream” and “obsession” was to see how a plane deported asylum seekers to Rwanda within the framework of the controversial immigration measure that the British Government promoted last year without success.

Pension spending grows 11% compared to last year and now amounts to 12,000 million per month

Social Security already spends 12,051 million euros each month to pay the more than 10 million contributory pensions registered in the system. This is clear from the pension system statistics published this Tuesday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

As of September 1, pension spending was 11% higher than what was recorded at this time last year. An increase that is due, for the most part, to the revaluation of benefits in accordance with the CPI, which during the year represented an increase of 8.4% in the pensioners' payroll.. To this we must add the increase in the number of pensions that has occurred since then – there are now 123,565 more – and the amount of benefit for the new additions is also higher than the system average.

Practically, three out of every four euros of spending in the system goes to cover retirements. The monthly payroll that the State pays in this concept already stands at 8,793 million euros, which places the average retirement pension at 1,376 euros per month in 14 payments (19,267 euros per year). An income that already exceeds the most common salary in Spain, which amounted to 18,502 euros per year in 2021 (latest data available).

In addition, the payroll received by new retirees who had registered in the system until August stands at 1,547 euros per month (21,656 per year), a figure practically tied to the median salary in Spain in 2021 (21,639 euros).. Of course, it is worth clarifying that the median salary – that which divides Spanish employees into two halves: those who earn more and those who earn less – is expected to have increased compared to the last two years.

However, behind these figures hides a very heterogeneous reality.. In 2022, 60% of pensioners received a benefit below the minimum interprofessional wage (1,080 euros per month in 14 payments), a proportion that in the case of retirements is reduced to 51%.. On the other side of the spectrum, there are 20% of retirees who receive a pension of more than 2,000 euros per month in 14 payments.

It is worth remembering that the 12,000 million expenses mentioned above include contributory pensions—those that require having contributed a minimum period of years to be able to receive them.. To know the total expenditure of the system, it would be necessary to incorporate the expenditure of the Passive Classes—those received primarily by military or civil servants—which represent another 1,474 million euros more per month.. In total, we are talking about 13,474 million euros in benefits.

Rising spending

Pensions already represent 41% of the expenditure included in the General State Budgets (PGE), classified by expenditure policy. A large figure that, for the most part, is covered by the social contributions paid by current workers.. However, since social contributions are not enough to pay all contributory benefits, the State must cover part of this deficit with transfers.. The Fedea study center recently estimated that in 2023 48,348 million euros of public money will be allocated to cover the imbalances in the system. Or what is the same, 3.6% of GDP.

Furthermore, the pension system has against it the factor of the aging of the population expected for the coming years.. Baby boomer retirement is imminent. This generational cohort is the largest in the pyramid and, in addition, their retirement is a challenge because they have had longer and better paid careers than their predecessors, especially women.

If nothing remedies it, pension spending will grow from 13.7% of current GDP (including Passive and non-contributory Classes) to 16.3% in 2049, according to Airef estimates.
