Commerce and real estate lead the boom in business creation, which until July registers a record number of new businesses since 2008

Business creation is advancing at an ever-increasing pace. So far this year, nearly 70,000 new businesses have been opened in Spain, a figure that far exceeds the 15,416 closed until July and represents the highest volume of companies established in the first seven months of the year since 2008.. Commerce and real estate are leading the boom in business creation, which is growing in parallel with business confidence.

Between the months of January and July, a total of 69,227 companies have been created in Spain, 11.24% more than in the same period last year. In fact, it has been fifteen years since so many companies were established during the first seven months, since 70,410 were reached in 2008.. According to the latest data on commercial companies updated this week by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the volume of businesses that have opened their doors is well above the closures.. Throughout the first seven months of 2023, a total of 15,416 companies have been dissolved, so that in total Spain has gained 53,811 companies so far this year.

In July alone – the last month for which there is data – an average of 267 companies were formed daily, for a total of 8,292 companies.. This is the second largest data for a seventh month of the year since 2007, only surpassed by the recovery of 2021, after the slowdown derived from the pandemic. The volume of businesses opened in July 2023 exceeds last year's record by 15.44%, which not only maintains the streak of positive year-on-year rates started at the beginning of the year, but also accelerates the pace compared to 14, 46% from the previous month. Although business creation usually suffers in the summer, the balance for July has been positive, since only 1,546 dissolutions were registered, 4.8% less than in the same period in 2022.. That is, 50 businesses closed their doors every day.

One in five newly created companies has concentrated in the commerce sector, which has been the most dynamic. They were followed by real estate agencies, banks and insurance, which represent, for their part, 17% of the openings.. Also noteworthy is the expansion of the business fabric in hospitality and construction, which 6,779 and 6,643 companies have won respectively so far this year.. In this way, the incorporation of companies in 2023 has reinforced the most active sectors. According to the INE business directory, at the end of 2022 there were 714,227 businesses and 425,251 companies dedicated to construction in Spain, these being the largest.

So far this year, not only has the creation of companies increased, but also capital increases, a maneuver with which companies increase their resources to be able to face debts or new projects, for example.. Between January and July, there have been 18,978 companies that have resorted to this route, while 4,509 have reduced their capital, 5.28% and 7.56% more respectively than in the first seven months of last year.. In July, the average subscribed capital decreased by 4.1% to 42,521 euros per company.

In expectation

The dynamism of the business fabric is related to the perceptions of the private sector about the evolution of the economy, given that good general behavior facilitates in principle the good progress of business, and vice versa.. According to data from the INE, the business confidence index in Spain has increased for three quarters since the beginning of the year. This indicator, which measures the opinion of businessmen about the current and future situation of their business with the aim of anticipating the evolution of the economy, grew by 2.6% for the period between July and September compared to the three months. previous.

However, it remains to be seen if these good prospects for businessmen continue to rise in the coming months, since economic forecasts suggest that the performance of the economy will be worse in the second half of the year than in the first.. “We are entering a clear period of very low growth,” said the president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, this Thursday at a press conference, after the monetary authority undertook a new increase in interest rates. that redoubles the pressure on those companies that have debts. “Difficult times have arrived,” he said.

In fact, despite the strength of business creation, the behavior of the last month could predict a soon change of pace. Although not so many companies were established in the seventh month of the year since 2007 and the overall balance so far this year is positive, the 8,292 businesses that opened their doors in July represent 18.7% less than the 10,206 of the previous month. This is the second largest monthly drop in a month of July since 2006, only behind that of 2022 (-19.4%). The slowdown of the summer months is a constant in the historical series, so we will have to wait to see if the last quarter of the year maintains or frustrates the pace of business openings.

Seven out of ten small and medium-sized companies have difficulty finding the employees they are looking for

Supply and demand in the Spanish labor market do not match. When the country registers 2.8 million unemployed, employers insist that they cannot find the workers they need.

This time it has been the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Enterprises (Cepyme) that has launched an SOS in the face of the growing difficulties of companies in filling vacant positions.. A weakness that is especially weighing down medium-sized SMEs since their ability to grow and expand their workforce is diminished.

“Many companies lose projects, stop investments, close production units, give up when looking for professionals and can even affect the viability of the business,” says the report 'The challenge of vacancies in Spain', which highlights that seven out of Ten SMEs (71%) confirm having “problems” filling job vacancies.

The Cepyme study highlights that in 2023 there are 150,000 declared vacancies, positions that are unfilled or that are going to be offered, although they explain that the figure does not reflect all the employment needs of companies.. Even so, the ratio of vacancies to total employees is at record levels since vacancy statistics began in 2013.

Industry, services and construction

By sectors, both industry and services show the maximum vacancy/employee ratio since there are data. Construction, although not at an all-time high, also has a higher proportion of vacancies.. By activity, Extractive industries, Gas and electricity supply and Real estate activities, information and communications and professional activities are at the all-time high. They also exceed transportation, and finance and insurance.

Businessmen ask the Government for “multi-ministerial” action that involves all Administrations.

In this disconnection between the supply and demand of employment in Spain, “underlying demographic causes, cultural and social changes and educational reasons,” denounces Cepyme.. Hence, businessmen ask the Government for a “multi-ministerial” action that involves all Administrations.

The “inefficiency” of active employment policies

Cepyme also points out the “inefficiency” of the current active employment policies that, together with the depopulation of part of the country, the aging of staff in important sectors (the average age of employees increases four years from 2008 to now, going from 39.5 to 43.7 years), “the deficit in continuous training and technical and technological profiles” and the “bureaucracy to import foreign labor” are hindering the labor market and the development of the business fabric.

Entrepreneurs believe, however, that the main cause of the imbalance must be found in the lack of training, the lack of adequacy between training skills and the demands of companies.. Eight out of ten companies face a lack of qualified personnel. That is why Cepyme wants to “open a reflection” on the link between the labor market and the educational field, as well as the promotion of technological skills and continuous training.

According to businessmen, the thinned population pyramid and the university studies chosen by youth, more in humanities (22%) than engineering (13.9%), reduce the pool of eligible. Although they have confidence in the FP reform, its effects are not yet being felt in the hiring of intermediate positions.

But, in addition, the Cepyme barometer (PDF) reflects that employers have zero confidence in public employment services, in the SEPE, since they only use this channel for 10% of recruitment. “Personal contacts (45%), social networks and the Internet (28.38%) are the main ways used by SMEs to find their employees”. That is why they request a diagnosis of active and passive employment policies that can increase their effectiveness.

Consequences of labor mismatch

Meanwhile, they denounce that the labor shortage has the effects of lower production, a drop in turnover, stagnation of productivity, lower competitiveness of the Spanish company and greater difficulty in generational change.. “That is, the lack of workers is slowing down the activity of many companies.”

In Spain there are 1.1 million microenterprises (those with less than 10 employees) that employ 3.5 million people. In addition, there are 168,800 small businesses (they have between 10 and 49 employees), which employ another 3.3 million people. Both groups (1.3 million companies that employ almost 7 million people) represent 38% of the Spanish business park and private employment.

Zelensky confirms the liberation of Klishchivka, on Bakhmut's southern flank: "Thank you for saving our land"

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, confirmed this Sunday night the liberation by Ukrainian troops of the town of Klishchivka, less than ten kilometers south of occupied Bakhmut.

“Klishchivka. I thank our fighters for liberating our land,” Zelensky wrote in a message in which he shared the video of his daily address to the nation.

The Ukrainian president cited in his thanks the 80th and 95th Air Assault brigades and the 'Furia' brigade of the National Police, created especially for the counter-offensive.. He also thanked those who resisted the Russian attacks from Kupiansk -northeast- to Kherson -south-.

According to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the recapture of Klishchivka, combined with the capture of Andrivka, also south of the eastern town of Bakhmut, will give Ukraine a solid “platform” to continue its advances on that part of the Donetsk province front.. Moscow has so far denied that its troops lost these two towns.

During the past week, kyiv forces have totally or partially liberated three towns located south of Bakhmut: Andrivka, Klishchivka and Optine. Since beginning its counteroffensive in early June, Ukraine has confirmed the liberation of some 50 square kilometers around Bakhmut.

The house of 'horrors': a man who had relations with his daughter was arrested after finding three dead babies in the basement

A father and his daughter face life in prison for murder and incest after police found the decomposed bodies of three newborn babies in the basement of their home.

Piotr Gierasik, 54, and Paulina Gierasik, 20, were arrested on Saturday, September 16, by Polish authorities in the town of Czerniki, located in the north of the country, after the remains of three babies were discovered in shallow graves. and wrapped in plastic bags, have been collected by different local media. The first two bodies were found on Friday and the third was discovered on the same Saturday of the arrest.

The district prosecutor, Mariusz Duszynski, has announced that the young woman has been charged with two counts of alleged murder and her father, with three. In addition, the man has been convicted of two charges of alleged incest, one of them with the 20-year-old daughter – who also faces a charge of incest – since two of the deceased babies were the result of a relationship between them.

The other charge of incest is attributed to him for allegedly having had sexual relations with another of his daughters, the prosecutor points out.. With her he would have had the third baby, also found dead at the scene.

The father and daughter have been detained by court decision and will remain in jail for three months, pending a trial to analyze the case.

Suspicions on the part of the young woman's colleagues

Piotr Gierasik moved to Czerniki approximately 15 years ago, taking care of his children after the death of his wife. “The father was left alone with the children. There are many, ten or twelve, the older ones have already left,” a neighbor told the local newspaper Super Express.

According to his testimony, the man made a “good impression” in the neighborhood, since he had fixed up the house he moved into and used to take his children to walk in the forest and pick mushrooms.. “Just ordinary people,” he says.

It was following an assumption made by one of Paulina's co-workers when the story of this family began to raise suspicions.. The witness realized that the young woman could be pregnant when she began to wear “big, baggy clothes” to go to work and, in addition, she was suddenly absent from her job for three weeks.

“We all assumed she was pregnant, I think she had tied belts around herself like some kind of corset. When he returned early from his vacation, the change was visible. I was much thinner, weaker and constantly tired. We asked her about the baby, but she feigned surprise and denied everything,” said another colleague.

Notice to social services

Another of the neighbors assured the Polish newspaper Fakt that Piotr and Paulina lived “like a couple”. “She called him by his first name. They walked hand in hand. A few months ago, he shaved her head so that other boys wouldn't look at her. The young woman admired him as if he were God,” he details in his testimony.

According to reports collected by authorities, one of Paulina's co-workers alerted social services after seeing a disturbing text message that the young woman had sent to her father.

At the moment, the Prosecutor's Office is waiting for the results of the three autopsies to determine how the babies died and the Police continue to search the house in search of more bodies or evidence that confirms the triple murder and incest.

Iran announces that it will exchange 10 prisoners with the United States this Monday

Iran and the United States will exchange five prisoners from each country this Monday, once the transfer of $6 billion of frozen Iranian funds to Qatar is completed, the Iranian government reported.

“Five Iranian citizens detained in the United States will be released and five American citizens will return to the United States,” said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kananí.

The diplomat indicated that two of the Iranian citizens will return to the Persian country, another two will remain in the United States and the fifth will travel to a third country.

According to regional media, American prisoners Siamak Namazi, Emad Shargi, Morad Tahbaz and two other unidentified people will be transported to Qatar in the early afternoon.

The prisoner exchange takes place after the transfer of $6 billion belonging to Tehran and blocked in South Korea has been completed, part of the agreement that Tehran and Washington reached in early August.

The United States approved a waiver for the release of funds from debts incurred by Seoul for the purchase of gas from Iran and the money has been transferred to several accounts in Qatar.

The United States has assured that Iran will not have “direct” access to the billions of dollars that can only be used for “strictly humanitarian” uses.

Hours before the announcement of the release of the prisoners, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisí left for New York this Monday to speak before the UN Assembly, where he is expected to hold a press conference, according to Iranian media.

Iran has been accused of using dual national and foreign prisoners as a pressure measure or for prisoner exchanges with other states, a practice described as “hostage diplomacy” by other countries and human rights organizations.

The Portuguese president provokes a controversy after commenting on the cleavage of a compatriot in Canada

The president of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has sparked a new controversy following his comments about the cleavage of a compatriot with whom he met in the middle of the street during a visit to Canada.

“The daughter still catches the flu. “Have you seen the neckline she's wearing?” said the Portuguese president last Thursday to two Portuguese emigrants, mother and daughter, with whom he spoke in Toronto.. The moment was recorded by public television.

Rebelo de Sousa himself has come out against this controversy: “It was not a sexist comment. I had not thought of it. Neither for the young nor for the old women. “It hasn't been sexist at all,” he responded when questioned by the press.

“At the end of the walk through the Portuguese part of Montreal it started to rain, it was cold” and that's why he warned “several older ladies, one of them with white hair and others who were younger,” he explained this Sunday. “I told several people, but apparently only one young woman was recorded: be careful, they still get constipated.”. “I got constipated,” he added.

Criticism of Rebelo de Sousa's words has come from various political parties, including the ruling Socalist Party (PS), and from the far-right ¡Basta!, the liberal Libre or the environmentalist People-Animals-Nature (PAN).

The national secretary of the PS, Isabel Moreira, has called on the head of state to apologize. “We are in 2023. You don't treat a woman you don't know making a joke about her weight.. You don't make a joke about a neckline (…). and apologize. Sexism kills us. It's not funny,” he declared, according to the Portuguese newspaper 'Público'.

“In the 21st century we have to see the normalization of this type of comments,” said PAN deputy Inês de Sousa Real, who has asked the head of state to “reinforce the importance of not normalizing these comments.”

We recently had the Rubiales case in Spain and the international community has mobilized

“We recently had the Rubiales case in Spain and the international community has mobilized. We are not going to equate the seriousness of the two situations, but the truth is that we cannot forget that we live in a world in which there is domestic violence and a quite accentuated siege where many times words uttered without malice can legitimize behaviors with other intentions,” he added.

The leader of ¡Basta!, André Ventura, has commented on Twitter that if it had been him who had uttered those phrases there would already be dozens of complaints “and I don't know how many associations and observatories for the defense of gender equality” mobilized.

Just a week ago Rebelo de Sousa was involved in another controversy when a woman sat on a bench next to the president to take a photo and he asked her if “the bank can hold?” in reference to his overweight. He had previously described Luis Rubiales's kiss as a “minor issue” compared to the war in Ukraine.

They capture how Russia bombs its own troops for surrendering in Ukraine

A video recorded from the sky showing how Russia bombs its own troops after surrendering in Ukraine was released this weekend via the Telegram messaging service.

As reported by the Mirror, Ukrainian forces have recaptured the village of Andriivka, about ten kilometers south of the Russian-occupied city of Bakhmut, as part of the slow but steady counteroffensive by Ukrainian troops.

The Third Assault Brigade said it surrounded the Russian garrison in what it described as a “lightning operation” and destroyed it within two days. By publishing details of the operation on Telegram, the Brigade shared a clip taken one day after the takeover of the area.

Aerial footage shows Ukrainian soldiers ordering Russian troops to lie on the ground as they surrender, before an explosion suddenly occurs in both forces.

The message read: “Mechanized Battalion Assault Group 2 takes another group of prisoners. At the same time, the enemy, realizing that the village is lost and its soldiers are surrendering en masse, orders to open 'fire of their own.'”

Ukrainian troops involved in the incident are believed to have been unharmed, but the assault unit said one of the Russian soldiers was killed.. and two others could be rescued alive.

The announcement of the recovery of Andriivka came early on Friday from the General Staff of the armed forces of Ukraine. He described the reconquest as an advance on Bakhmut's southern flank and “the key to success in all subsequent directions.”
