Inflation picks up in July to 2.3% due to higher fuel and food prices

Inflation accelerated in July to 2.3%, 4 tenths more than in June, driven by higher fuel prices in a month in which the price of food and beverages rose 10.8%.

The National Institute of Statistics (INE) has confirmed this Friday the data of the consumer price index (CPI), which shows a rise in food five tenths higher than that of June due to the increase in the cost of fruit and oils and fats.

With this rebound, inflation leaves behind two consecutive months of moderation, May (3.2%) and June (1.9%), although it is far from the double-digit rates registered in the summer of 2022, partly due to the effect of comparing with a period in which prices were already rising.

For its part, the INE has confirmed that core inflation (excluding unprocessed food and energy products) rose three tenths in July, to 6.2%, standing almost four points above the general CPI.

Statistics have attributed the increase in the general CPI to the rise in prices of fuels and lubricants for personal vehicles, the increase in the cost of clothing and footwear, the increase in tourist packages and the rise in food and non-alcoholic beverages.

In the case of the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, the INE has confirmed that they increased their variation by five tenths and reached 10.8%, due to the fact that the prices of fruit and oils and fats increased in July this year, compared to the decrease registered in the same month of 2022.

The map of the war in August: Russia bombards the Zaporizhia region and kyiv requests missiles to advance the counteroffensive

Russian forces have bombarded several Ukrainian cities this Friday, including Kiev, for which they have used four Kinzhal hypersonic missiles, while on the ground Ukrainian troops have continued their attacks against Russian Army positions on various fronts.

One of the hypersonic missiles has been shot down on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, while the other three have hit near the Kolomya airfield, in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, in the west of the country, reported the Ukrainian Air Force ( FAU).

kyiv denounces attacks against young pilots

The FAU spokesman, Yuri Ignat, has indicated that the attack on Kolomya was directed against young Ukrainian pilots who “soon are going to travel abroad for training” to fly other types of aircraft, “first of all, F-16 “.

This is what the map of the conflict looks like right now, according to Deciphering War:

“In this way, the enemy wanted to attack our youth, thus depriving us of the prospects for further rearmament with the latest models of Western aircraft,” he added.. According to the Ivano-Frankivsk authorities, an 8-year-old boy has been killed in that attack.

Nine Ukrainian regions bombed

On Thursday night, nine regions of Ukraine were attacked, the southern region of Zaporizhia being hardest hit, where there were shelling in 23 towns in which two people died and 21 were injured.

Although air threats also extend to Russia: for one hour, Moscow's Vnukovo airport has suspended flight departures and arrivals this Friday for “security reasons” and has resumed operations after the downing of a drone was reported. in eastern Moscow, which has caused no casualties or material damage.

This Thursday, a similar incident led to the temporary closure of Vnukovo and also of Domodedovo, another of Moscow's three main airports.

Heavy fighting at the front

In Ukraine, the fighting continues without reducing its intensity. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, on Thursday, Moscow troops improved their positions on the Kupiank front, in the northeast.

“The assault detachments of the 'West' troop group, with the support of aviation and artillery, continued offensive actions, improved their tactical situation near the towns of Olshan and Pershotravne,” defense spokesman Igor said. Konashénkov, when offering the daily war report.

The military indicated that on Thursday Russian troops repelled a total of fourteen Ukrainian attacks in five sectors of the front, where the attackers suffered, he said, about 600 casualties.

Ukraine calls for long-range missiles

Ukraine hopes that the German government will approve the supply of Taurus long-range missiles, weapons that Kiev considers essential to boost the counteroffensive that began on June 4 and which has slowed down due to the strength of the Russian defensive lines.

As published this Friday by the weekly Der Spiegel, Berlin is considering the delivery of Taurus missiles to Ukraine, which have a range of more than 500 kilometers, as long as they are modified so that they cannot be used against Russian territory. The kyiv government maintains that such restrictions allow Russia to attack all regions of Ukraine with impunity from its territory.

Zelensky points to the corrupt

In addition to the situation at the front, the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, today focused attention on a problem that affects the morale of his troops: corruption in the recruitment offices, which allows them to evade the call-up.

“The system should be run by people who know exactly what war is.. Cynicism and bribery in wartime are treasonous,” the president said when announcing the dismissal of all the heads of the regional recruitment offices.

These offices must be in charge of “soldiers who have passed through the front or who cannot be in the trenches for health reasons; they have lost their limbs, but have preserved their dignity,” he stressed.

UK 'floating prison' evacuated due to Legionella outbreak

Migrants detained this week on the huge barge that the British government has set up as a floating detention center in Dorset County have had to be evacuated after legionella bacteria were found in the water.

About fifty migrants had begun arriving on the barge, a large structure with a capacity for 500 people, earlier this week in a move criticized by both the Labor opposition and NGOs as an inhumane decision and an act of deliberate confinement.

The migrants have been moved out of the structure as a precautionary measure and right now there have been no cases of disease among the occupants of the 'Bibby Stockholm', as confirmed by a spokesman for the Interior to the British chain Sky News.

The chain, citing its own sources, points out in particular that the Government ordered a routine test of the water supply on July 25 but the results did not arrive until August 7, when the migrants had begun to be embarked.

Now, “environmental samples from the water system of the 'Bibby Stockholm' barge have shown levels of legionella bacteria that require further investigation,” according to the Interior spokesman.

Based on these initial results, however, the Home Office, in collaboration with the country's Health Security Agency, the UKHSA, have decided to undertake this procedure under the supervision of Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.

The governor of the self-proclaimed and pro-Russian Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Denis Pushilin, has assured that the controversial cluster bombs supplied by the United States to the Armed Forces of Ukraine kill and injure civilians “every day”.

According to Pushilin -imposed in office by the Kremlin- the city of Donetsk and other towns in the region of the same name are “daily under enemy cluster fire”.. “People die and are injured,” he added on his Telegram channel.

Pushilin recalled that cluster bombs are prohibited by a large part of the international community, and has criticized the US Pentagon for ensuring that kyiv uses this type of munition “correctly.”

“Cluster-type projectiles are prohibited (…) and not with the exception of cases of application 'properly' (…) And they are under prohibition due to the fact that the main victims of their use are civilians “, has reported the governor of the DPR.

In this context, Pushilin has taken the opportunity to attack the United States and its operations in Southeast Asia in the second half of the 20th century, where it made those lands a “field of criminal experiments.”

“The vast territories of these countries are literally littered with unexploded bombs. Today, unable to reverse the unfortunate situation that is developing in the war zone (…) Washington uses prohibited habitual methods,” he added.

“Well, nothing new.. The United States still considers itself an unshakable hegemon, an illusion. Believing that they can continue to wage proxy wars, they use prohibited munitions and methods of warfare,” Pushilin said.

The US authorities supplied the Ukrainian Armed Forces weeks ago with a series of cluster bombs under kyiv's promise that they would use them only for demining purposes and away from urban centers and inhabited areas.

The shipment of weapons, prohibited due to its negative impact on the civilian population, aroused criticism not only from Russia, but from some of the closest allies of the United States and Ukraine, such as Germany, the United Kingdom or Canada.

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office prosecutes the six detainees for the attack on presidential candidate Villavicencio

The Ecuadorian Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against the six men arrested for their alleged participation in the murder on Wednesday of politician Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate for the presidential elections, understanding that the crime has generated “social commotion” and a “high risk of flight”. by the suspects, who have Colombian nationality.

The Public Ministry has presented in a hearing 22 “elements of conviction” that would support the prosecution of these people, among which are evidence from the crime scene and the searches carried out, as well as statements by witnesses of the attack that claimed the Villavicencio's life after an electoral rally in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito.

The US Department of Justice appoints a special prosecutor for the case of Biden's son

The Secretary of Justice of the United States, Merrick Garland, has announced this Friday the appointment of a special prosecutor for the investigation against Hunter Biden, the son of the president of the country, Joe Biden.

The one specifically chosen has been David Weiss, the Delaware federal prosecutor who has led the investigations carried out against the president's son up to now. This jurist will thus supervise the investigation and decide “where, when and if to file charges”, as explained by Garland, who has assured that this prosecutor “will not be subject to the daily supervision of any department official”.

This prosecutor was appointed in 2017 by former President Donald Trump and ratified by the Republican Senate a year later. With his election, Biden wants to clear up all doubts about any accusation of partisanship in favor of his son.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty in June to a series of misdemeanors for irregularities on his income tax return, including non-payment of taxes.. However, the exact terms of his guilty plea were not settled because there is also an additional charge against him for possession of firearms, so for now he remains found not guilty.

In addition, the president's son faces a possible congressional investigation, led by the Republican Party, into what House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer describes as the “shady dealings” of the Biden family. .

The arrest of Daniel Sancho after confessing to the murder and dismemberment of the Colombian surgeon, Edwin Arrieta, continues to leave new information.

According to the Telecinco program Así es la vida, Arrieta would have reserved “a gigantic and maximum luxury resort” in Thailand more than 50 minutes by car from the bungalow in which Sancho allegedly ended the life of the Colombian. Apparently , the reservation would have been made by Edwin Arrieta for the 2nd and 3rd of August.

It was precisely on August 2 when Arrieta arrived on the island of Koh Phangan, the day he was allegedly dismembered.. “We have had access to a document that Edwin sends to the hotel from Colombia, an authorization to say that he is going to have a companion in the room and, therefore, he can check in and check out Daniel Sancho”, they explain from the aforementioned program.

“The hotel confirms that Edwin never comes to check in and check out, which was Daniel Sancho,” they add.

“He checks in on August 2 and leaves on August 3, the hotel staff has confirmed it to us and tells us that he would have spent the night from August 2 to 3 here,” details Así es la vida

A man murders his ex-wife while recording it live, kills two people and finally commits suicide

A man has shot his ex-wife to death while broadcasting all the images of the murder on an Instagram live. Immediately afterwards, he has killed two men and injured three other people before committing suicide. Everything has happened this Friday in the north of Bosnia-Herzegovina, as reported by the Prosecutor's Office of the northern canton of Tuzla.

The perpetrator of the crime, identified as Nermin Sulejmanovic, “shot his former wife and two men, father and son, with a pistol. He injured a policeman, another man and a woman” in different places in the city of Gradacac, the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. According to the Bosnian portal 'Klix', the injured woman is in critical condition, hospitalized in Tuzla.

The footage was removed from the social network

The attacker filmed and broadcast live the moment in which he killed his ex-wife with a shot to the head. In other images, while he was on the run, he commented on the other murders he had committed, before committing suicide after being cornered by police officers. Subsequently, the footage was removed from the social network by the Bosnian authorities.

Local media claim Sulejmanovic had a criminal record. So far, the motive for the multiple crime that has shocked Bosnian society and has sparked protests by activists and citizens has not been revealed.

In the cities of Sarajevo and Mostar, the protesters who took to the streets demanded a more effective fight against sexist violence and more severe penalties for the perpetrators of femicides.. In addition, they claimed to have information that the murdered woman had filed a complaint for domestic violence and they speculate that this step could have triggered the crime, which is why they ask that they also investigate how the information about the complaint could have reached her ex-husband. .

Elon Musk contacts Meloni to fix the location of his fight with Zuckerberg

The tycoon Elon Musk, owner among other companies of the social network X -formerly known as Twitter-, has claimed to have maintained contacts with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, to negotiate an “epic location” for his fight with the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg.

“I have spoken with the Prime Minister of Italy and with the Minister of Culture (Gennaro Sangiuliano). They have agreed on an epic location,” Musk said in a publication in which he also reported that the much-announced fight with Zuckerberg will be managed by the companies of one and the other tycoon, not by the martial arts company UFC.

“The live streaming will be on this platform and on Meta (Facebook matrix). Everything in the camera focus will be ancient Rome, so nothing modern at all (…) Everything that is done will pay respect to the past and present of Italy”, Musk has settled, ensuring that all the proceeds will go to ” the veterans”.

Both magnates challenged each other last June to a hand-to-hand fight of mixed martial arts -known as MMA for its acronym in English- and the owner of X even went so far as to propose venues such as Las Vegas or the Colosseum itself in Rome.. Zuckerberg has proposed that the bout take place on August 26.
