The Rich Heritage and Prestigious Awards of Spanish Football

The history of Spanish football in Madrid commenced in 1896 with the establishment of the Football Sky club, which later laid the foundation for the iconic Real Madrid. On March 6, 1902, the club, initially known as «Madrid Football Club,» was officially founded by brothers Padros and Julián Palacios.

A memorable date in Spanish football history is June 29, 1920, when King Alfonso XIII of Spain bestowed the club with the title of Royal, which in Spanish translates to «Real.» Thus, the club adopted its modern name, Real Madrid.

Football tournaments in Spain have played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s sporting landscape. The emergence of professional football clubs ushered in a new era of championships and competitions.

One of the earliest tournaments in the history of Spanish football was the Macaya Cup (Copa Macaya), held in December 1900, featuring four Catalan clubs. Alfonso Macaya, the president of Barcelona club «Spain,» spearheaded the initiative to organize the tournament.

The Macaya Cup served as the precursor to the Catalan Football Championship, an event that continues to this day. Spain emerged as the victor in the inaugural Macaya Cup.

A significant milestone in Spanish football history arrived with the Coronation Cup, also known as the Madrid Competition.

Held from May 13 to 16, 1902, in Madrid, the tournament commemorated the coronation of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Five clubs from different cities participated, with the Biscay club ultimately triumphing over Barcelona in the final.

The success of the Coronation Cup paved the way for the establishment of the annual national championship of Spain, which took shape in 1903 and has since been known as the Spanish Football Cup (Copa del Rey or Royal Cup).

As the oldest football tournament in Spain, the Copa del Rey held the status of a national championship before the formation of the Spanish Football League in 1928.

Teams were selected through local and regional football associations. Today, the Copa del Rey includes clubs from the Primera (top division), all teams from the Segunda (second division), the finest clubs from the Segunda «B,» and the champions of the Tercera (fourth division).

In terms of victories, Barcelona holds the record in the history of Spanish football, closely followed by Athletic Bilbao, with Real Madrid trailing behind.

In 1909, the Royal Spanish Football Federation was established as the governing body overseeing football in Spain. Headquartered in Madrid, the federation became a member of FIFA in 1913 and joined UEFA in 1954, solidifying its position in the global football community.

Another notable tournament in Spanish football after the Copa del Rey is the Spanish Football Championship, founded in 1928 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Unlike the Copa del Rey, which involves clubs from multiple divisions, the Spanish Football Championship, also known as La Liga or the Primera Division, exclusively features teams from the top division.

According to Spanish football history, in the 2010-2011 season, Real Madrid clinched the championship 31 times, with Barcelona following closely with 21 titles.

The winners of the Spanish Cup and the Spanish Football Championship face off in the Spanish Super Cup, a two-legged tournament where the victor is determined by the aggregate goal tally from both matches.

Real Madrid and Barcelona stand as the most decorated teams in the Super Cup, boasting 8 and 10 victories, respectively.

The main professional football competitions in Spain consist of three tournaments: the Spanish Football Championship (La Liga), the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup. These events showcase the finest talent in Spanish football and captivate fans nationwide.

Spanish football encompasses a rich tapestry of competitions beyond the well-known ones. Alongside prominent tournaments like the Copa Catalunya, the Spanish Football Championship among Segunda Division «B» teams, the Spanish Football Championship of Tercera division teams, and friendly tournaments contribute to the vibrant football scene in Spain.

One of the most captivating fixtures in Spanish football is El Clasico, also known as the Spanish Derby, featuring the titanic clash between the two powerhouses, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Stemming from the representation of the largest Spanish cities, Madrid and Barcelona, this rivalry has become an intriguing phenomenon. Most El Clasico matches take place in the iconic stadiums that have attained legendary status in Spain.

Barcelona’s home ground, Camp Nou, stands as Europe’s largest five-star stadium, while Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu serves as their fortress.

The passion for football extends to women’s and youth football in Spain. Women’s football and youth competitions have garnered significant popularity and support.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation actively organizes tournaments for women’s and youth clubs, nurturing talent and providing a platform for aspiring players.

Women’s football competitions in Spain encompass the Spanish Women’s Football Championship, the Spanish First Division in women’s football, the Women’s Spanish Cup, and the Women’s Football Cup of Catalonia.

Youth competitions hold immense value in developing future stars, and Spain boasts various tournaments dedicated to nurturing young talent.

These include the Spanish Football Championship among youth teams, the National League of Spain for youth teams, the Cup of Spain in football among youth teams, and the Spanish Football Champions Cup among youth teams.

These events showcase the skills and potential of young players, providing a pathway for their growth in the sport.

The diverse array of competitions in Spanish football ensures that fans of all ages, genders, and skill levels can find a platform to engage with the beautiful game and witness the emergence of new stars.

Awards and accolades play a significant role in recognizing the achievements of Spanish players, referees, and coaches in the realm of football. Many of these prestigious honors have been established by the renowned Spanish daily sports newspaper, Marca.

The history of Spanish football is intertwined with the founding of Marca in 1938 in San Sebastian. Initially a weekly publication, the newspaper transitioned to a daily format in 1942, with a primary focus on comprehensive football coverage in Spain.

Marca boasts an impressive readership of approximately 2.3 million, making it the most widely read print media outlet in Spain. In 1995, Marca further expanded its reach with the launch of its website, which has become the most visited sports resource in Spain, drawing over three million users monthly.

A significant milestone in Spanish football history arrived in 2001 with the establishment of Radiomarca, a 24-hour radio station dedicated to the sport.

Among the prestigious individual awards bestowed in Spanish football, the Trofeo Pichichi stands out. Presented by Marca since the 1928-1929 season, this accolade recognizes the top scorer in the Primera Division and is named after Rafael Moreno Aransadi, the legendary player from Athletic Bilbao, affectionately known as Pichichi.

The Ricardo Zamora Trophy, initiated by Marca in 1958, is another esteemed honor in Spanish football. Named after the iconic Spanish goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora (Barcelona, 1901-1978), who was revered as «el Divino» (the divine), this award acknowledges the goalkeeper who concedes the fewest goals in relation to matches played.

The Don Balón Award, granted by Don Balón magazine since 1976, holds significant prestige in Spanish football. This distinguished accolade celebrates the best football players and coaches in the Spanish Championship, honoring those who demonstrate exceptional performance throughout the football season.

The Trofeo di Stéfano, named after Spanish-Argentine player Alfredo di Stéfano, is an award presented to the best player in La Liga. Marca readers partake in the selection process, nominating weekly candidates, while prominent football pundits choose the ultimate winner based on their outstanding performances throughout the year.

The Trofeo Miguel Muñoz, named after the highly successful football player and coach Miguel Muñoz, is an annual award presented by Marca to the best coaches in the Primera and Segunda leagues. This accolade, established in 2005, recognizes their remarkable contributions to Spanish football.

The prestigious Trophy Guruceta, established in 1986 by Marca, is awarded annually to the best referee in the Primera and Segunda Divisions. Initially dedicated solely to first-division referees, it expanded in the 1993-1994 season to include referees from the Segunda Division.

Another esteemed honor, the Golden Whistle Award (Silbato de oro), was introduced by the Royal Spanish Football Federation in 1976. This accolade recognizes the best referees in the Primera and Segunda Divisions. Prior to 1990, two awards were presented: the Golden Whistle for the top referee in La Liga and the Silver Whistle for the best referee in the Segunda Division.

These awards and trophies serve as symbols of excellence, celebrating the remarkable contributions of individuals within Spanish football, while adding to the rich tapestry of the sport’s history in the country.

The rich sporting culture in Spain is a testament to the country’s vibrant and active lifestyle, promoting physical fitness, competition, and the pursuit of personal excellence.

Global warming and temperature record, the Aemet notice for the arrival of El Niño

Experts have been warning for weeks of a meteorological phenomenon that is about to reach Spain. This is El Niño, which can raise temperatures across the planet in ways never seen before. As explained by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the Earth could increase its temperature to the critical threshold (1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial level) this summer. The equatorial region of the largest ocean on Earth is already in a transition period.

And it is that, during the last three years, the equatorial waters of the Pacific Ocean have registered temperature values lower than normal, an oceanic pattern known as La Niña, but this 2023 the situation will change. While La Niña deflates between February and May, El Niño will emerge starting in the summer months, according to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)..

The Aemet once again insists on the imminent arrival of this phenomenon through a press release published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). According to the document, the probability of establishing an El Niño episode between May and July is close to 60%, and this percentage increases to 70-80% for the period from July to September..

What will happen in Spain

“We have just experienced the eight warmest years on record, despite the fact that, during the last three years, the La Niña episode has exerted a cooling effect that has temporarily slowed the increase in global temperature,” detail. “Most likely, the onset of an El Niño episode will trigger a new uptick in global warming and increase the chances of breaking temperature records,” says WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas..

All in all, scientists call this cyclical El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) pattern. Thus, they point out that “the effect on global temperatures usually manifests itself the year after the establishment of this phenomenon, so its consequences will probably be more noticeable in 2024”.

Everything points to even more severe periods of heat, drought or precipitation in different parts of the world. The Aemet maintains that it does not know what effect it will have in Spain. “It is complicated to know the effects, both in temperature, although globally it is expected that this phenomenon will result in higher temperatures, and in precipitation, as there are many other factors, apart from the variability of the system itself, which may influence,” they clarify.

The CIS of Tezanos gives the PSOE in Asturias the winner with 36.7% of the vote followed by PP, with 27.3% and Vox, with 9.1%

The PSOE would win the regional elections in Asturias on May 28 by obtaining 36.7% of the votes. It would be followed by the PP, which would achieve 27.3% of the vote, and the third political force in the Asturian parliament would be Vox with 9.1% of the vote, according to the macro-survey published this Thursday by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS)..

The CIS has not estimated seats in this study as a result of the sample size (500 interviews) and the electoral constituencies, so there is no distribution of seats in the General Meeting of the Principality.

The CIS also predicts that the fourth political force in the Principality would be Podemos with 8% of the votes; fifth force Call for Asturias with 6.8%, Foro Asturias with the support of 4.5% and Ciudadanos would get the support of 3.7%. The study maintains that 22.3 percent of the Asturian respondents have not yet decided on the vote. Abstention is 1.7% and people who have not wanted to answer amount to 3.3%.

Leader Assessments

The current president of the Principality of Asturias and PSOE candidate for re-election in the upcoming regional elections on May 28, Adrián Barbón, is the most valued political leader in Asturias and the only one whose work is approved by the citizens..

In this way, the CIS survey determines that the average grade that Asturians give Barbón is 5.46, above the PP candidate, Diego Canga, who obtains a 4.60 grade; Covadonga Tomé, candidate for Podemos, who scores 4.48; followed by the candidate for Call for Asturias (IU-Más País), Ovidio Zapico, with 4.33; the candidate from Foro Asturias, Adrián Pumares, who has a 4.27; the Ciudadanos candidate, Manuel Iñarra, with 3.85; and the Vox candidate, Carolina López, with 3.65.

CIS | Tezanos gives victory to the PP in La Rioja with 39% but would not get a majority

The PP would win the regional elections in La Rioja on May 28, with 39.2 percent of the votes, achieving between 14 and 15 deputies -currently it has 12-, while the PSOE would obtain 36 percent of the support, and the number of parliamentarians would drop, from 15 that it now has to the 13-14 that the survey published this Thursday by the Center for Sociological Research (CIS) gives it.

However, neither of the two formations achieves a majority, which in the La Rioja Parliament is set at 17 seats. To do this, they must seek support from the rest of the forces that attend the elections.

Specifically, the survey gives Podemos-IU 9.9 percent of the votes, which would give it between 2 and 4 parliamentarians, for the two they currently have, when they competed under the brand 'Unidas Podemos'.

Vox would enter the La Rioja Chamber for the first time, obtaining 5.6 percent of the support, with which they would achieve between 1 and 2 deputies.

Against Ciudadanos he would keep 2.5 percent of the votes, staying out of Parliament, and thus losing the four deputies they obtained in 2019.

The PR+España Vaciada, according to the survey, would obtain 3.6 percent of the votes, which means that it does not add either to enter the Hemicycle, while 1.6 percent would achieve the rest of the formations.

Iran Issues Arrest Warrant For Donald Trump Over Death Of Commander Soliemani

The Tehran prosecutor has issued an arrest warrant for 73 suspects, including former US President Donald Trump and former Secretary of State of his administration Mike Pompeo, for their alleged responsibility in the case of the death of Iranian Revolutionary Guard commander Qasem Soleimani, killed in a US attack in Baghdad in 2020.

Judge Ali Salehi has indicated that, after collecting more than 12,000 court documents against the defendants, he has summoned several dozen US citizens to trial, while suspending the prosecution of another 74 people due to lack of concrete evidence..

In the case of Trump, he has stated that he openly assumed his responsibility “in the face of this terrorist crime against humanity” and, despite the fact that Tehran is committed to international obligations such as the principle of immunity of government officials, he has criticized that the US judicial system refused to prosecute the US defendants, advocating impunity for some crimes.

This is why Salehi has pointed out that the investigation has determined that “this terrorist operation was decided and implemented at the highest level by political officials, military and members of United States Intelligence”. In addition, the prosecutor has explained that he has sent requests for judicial cooperation to the competent authorities of several countries that could have played a role in Soleimani's death, reports the Mehr news agency..

Salehi has also indicated that several meetings have been held with the authorities of Iraq, where the attack took place, in which both countries have expressed “their determination to prosecute and punish the perpetrators and those involved in the commission of the crime.”.

An Iraqi court also issued an arrest warrant against Trump in January 2021 for ordering the bombing carried out a year earlier in the country's capital, Baghdad, which resulted in the death of Soleimani..

López Miras demands to convene the Conference of Presidents to address an "exceptional" drought

The President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, has sent a letter to the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, requesting the convening, “urgently”, of a Conference of Presidents to address “the problem of water” that shakes a good part of the autonomous communities of the country and that already affects both the agricultural sector and human consumption.

The situation of the almond plantations in the Region of Murcia that are at the limit or the restrictions that the inhabitants of various towns in Andalusia are suffering are worth as a sample button.. “Water is a matter of State”, as remarked by López Miras. “We are in an exceptional situation that cannot be resolved with unilateral, electoral decisions and with smokescreens.”

The objective of the letter sent from the Palacio de San Esteban to the Moncloa is to get Sánchez to convene all the regional presidents, to address, “jointly”, possible solutions to a period of drought that lasts for months and that is leaving the reserves of the Spanish swamps low.

“We are in a situation that right now is exceptional, but of course, the water deficit in Spain and the need that exists at this time where Spaniards do not have the right to access water under the same conditions: it is a structural problem in our country”, as stressed by the head of the Murcian Executive.

The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, this Thursday, requesting the convening of a Conference of Presidents to address the drought situation.

“Sánchez is patching up an exceptional situation that requires all of us regional presidents to sit down to talk about water”. So López Miras has sent a letter to the President of the Government, with the aim of demanding in the Conference of Presidents “the need” to enable infrastructure, interconnect basins and transfers, as well as promote a National Water Plan “as soon as possible”. .

EL ESPAÑOL has accessed the letter from López Miras to Sánchez, where it begins by exposing the water deficit that the Region of Murcia, Andalusia and the Valencian Community have historically suffered:

“As you know, the Region of Murcia and the entire Spanish Levante suffer from a structural water deficit that makes it necessary to adopt policies that provide an effective response to this problem. A situation that has been especially aggravated in recent months by the extreme drought that affects the whole of Spain, with serious consequences at an economic, social and environmental level, and that forces all administrations to unite our efforts to be able to face it. “.

In the letter, he also alerted Moncloa that concern is spreading in the agricultural and livestock sectors, which are generators of employment in the labor market, and therefore, contribute to the country's economy.

“In recent years and on repeated occasions, I have expressed my deep concern about this matter, as well as my total predisposition to be able to hold a meeting with you to advance a definitive solution to the water problem in the Region of Murcia, which requires for This is a great national agreement that puts an end to disputes over an essential resource that belongs to all Spaniards. Some meeting proposals that, unfortunately, have never received a response from you, but for the Government of the Region of Murcia they are still fully valid, the same as from day one”.

“This is not the time for sterile confrontations or reproaches, but rather to act without delay. The worrying situation that our farmers and the vast majority of agricultural and livestock farms in Spain are experiencing, due to the drought, requires a heightened vision and the sum of forces instead of exacerbating the differences”.

The president of the Region of Murcia, this Thursday, attending to the media in an act. Alfonso Duran

López Miras appeals in his letter to the “constitutional principles of equality and solidarity” between all territories and citizens so that a Conference of Presidents is urgently convened, to address the situation of drought that is beginning to leave worrying patterns, such as the Ebro river with the lowest water levels of the last three decades.

“As representatives of our citizens, we are obliged to find a definitive solution to one of the greatest factors of territorial inequality in our country today, which is access to water for all Spaniards under the same conditions.. For all these reasons, I raise the urgent need to convene a Conference of Autonomous Presidents to address without delay, and in a joint, equitable and fair manner, the need to lay the foundations of a National Water Pact and a National Hydrological Plan”.

“The current situation of lack of water that Spain is going through requires immediate responses, but it is also unavoidable that the administrations be able to provide a global solution to a problem that, in basins such as the Segura, is already structural, and could very soon be also in the rest of Spain. That is why, jointly, with dialogue and agreement, we must move towards that definitive solution to the water needs in our country, agreeing on a distribution that guarantees this resource to all Spaniards”.

Chivite defends that there are 44 ETA members on the Bildu lists and Urkullu condemns him: "It is disrespectful"

While the president of the Government of Navarra, María Chivite, has assured this Thursday that it is “strictly legal” that there are 44 convicted of belonging to ETA -seven of them for murder- on the electoral lists of EH Bildu for the 28-M elections , the lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, has criticized without any filter the “lack of respect and consideration” of the abertzale formation towards the victims of terrorism.

Chivite, who has acknowledged that “I don't like” this decision by Bildu but that we must look to the future and for the coexistence of Navarra, explained that the lists are completely legal because the Electoral Board “approves” them.. In fact, he recalled that EH Bildu complies with the legal framework and that what the terrorist group was asked to do was lay down its weapons and form part of the democratic system.

[Irene Montero, on the ETA members on the 28-M lists: “Maximum respect, Bildu is a democratic party”]

“Going from violence to impose your ideas to the word, to agree on them, I think it is a success of democracy and of society as a whole. ETA disappeared 10 years ago. The future of Basque or Navarre society, like it or not, in certain places, like it or not, has to be built with Bildu”, Chivite asserted, citing the PP politician Borja Sémper, at an Informative Breakfast held today by Europa Press .

Urkullu: “It is disrespectful”

In the Basque Country, the Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, has criticized the fact that there are 44 ETA convicts on the lists of EH Bildu, a party which he has accused of “lack of respect, consideration and sensitivity” towards the victims of terrorism.

“They have the right to appear on the lists but there is no right to demonstrate once again the lack of respect, consideration and sensitivity towards the victims”, he has censured.

Likewise, it has considered that it is not acceptable that the abertzale coalition does not have “the respect that is necessary towards the sensitivity of Basque society”. “There is no right to always have us in this permanent whirlwind,” he warned.

[Javier Lambán: “I'm not a sanchista. ERC and Bildu are undesirable allies, they want to destroy the country”]

convicted of murder

This Tuesday, the Collective of Victims of Terrorism (Covite) denounced that EH Bildu has presented 44 candidates in the Basque Country and Navarra who were convicted of belonging to and collaborating with ETA.

As reported by EL ESPAÑOL this Wednesday, Bildu presents two ETA members as candidates for the May 28 elections in the same municipalities where their victims were murdered. They are Lander Maruri Basagoiti, who is running as a substitute on the Bildu list for the Ciérvana City Council (Vizcaya) and Juan Ramón Rojo González, who is number 21 on the list for the Irún City Council (Guipúzcoa).

Lander Maruri Basagoiti (above) and Juan Ramón Rojo in an old and a new image, respectively.

Maruri Basagoiti was sentenced in 2001 to 16 years in prison for his complicity in the murder of the civil guard   Jose Manuel Garcia Fernandez.   The crime was perpetrated in 1997. With him, the ETA member was also sentenced   Asier Uribarri Benito, another of the murderers who is on the lists of the Batasuna heir formation, in his case, by the Vizcaya town of Maruri.

As for Rojo González, he murdered two people in separate attacks. in   1991 riddled the young man in Irún   Francisco Gil Mendoza.   For that crime he was sentenced to 30 years in prison in 1996.. Five months later, already in 1992, he killed a national police officer in Bilbao, for which he was sentenced to another 27 years in prison. Thirty years later he returns to the city as one of Bildu's candidates.

Both candidates, upon their release from prison, received their particular ongi etorri, the welcoming public tribute that is often shamelessly given to ETA assassins when they return home after serving their sentence.

[The ETA member who planned to kill Mayor Rita Barberá is on Bildu's lists to be a councilor]

EH Bildu defends his lists

EH Bildu's candidate for the Presidency of Navarra,   Laura Aznal, stated this Wednesday that the people sentenced for their membership of ETA who are part of the electoral lists of the coalition   “They have all their rights intact, their political rights as well.”

Asked by the journalists about this issue, Aznal has opined that “all the press today shows a   extreme nervousness   by other political formations” and has indicated that “we are very calm,   we have very good expectations   ahead of these elections.

He has stressed that “in his day we presented some lists, these lists went through the Electoral Board that did not put any problem”. “All these people have all their rights intact, their political rights as well,” he stressed.

[The PSOE, powerless in the presence of ETA assassins on the Bildu lists: “Better votes than bullets”]

Irene Montero: “Bildu is democratic”

The leader of Podemos and Minister of Social Rights, Ione Belarra, pointed out this Thursday that today the situation is “very different” from that of 10 years ago and that the right “does not know how to campaign without talking about the terrorist band”.

Yesterday the Minister for Equality, Irene Montero, who this Wednesday declined to comment on the presence of those convicted of belonging to or collaborating with ETA on the Bildu lists and limited herself to stressing that the formation of the nationalist left is “a democratic party” that elects the candidates it considers “opportune”.

From the other wing of the Government, the   PSOE spokesman in Congress,   Patxi López, has recognized that   does not like anything”   that EH Bildu include 44 people convicted in the past for belonging to ETA on its lists for the Basque Country and Navarre for the May 28 elections.

For his part, the ERC parliamentary spokesman, Gabriel Rufián, stressed that Bildu is a nationalist force that “likes more or less” is “important in the Basque Country and does politics” and recalled that ETA “has not existed for more than a decade “. “And this is not debatable, it is pure information. On the other hand, fascism continues to exist, we see demonstrations, positions and even attacks with fascism behind it and there is still representation of these ideas and people condemned for these ideas.”

From the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has opined that the governability of Spain cannot rest on a party like Bildu, which has people “convicted of murder” on its lists. As he stressed, this type of agreement between Pedro Sánchez and that formation confirms that “sanchismo” must be “repealed”.

The Vox spokesman in Congress, Iván Espinosa de los Monteros, maintains the same line, who considers that this shows that calling the members of the Abertzale coalition “filoetarras” is “to fall short” because they are “etatarras”.

Two Conil players are arrested in a match-fixing network

The Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal organization in the province of Cádiz that was dedicated to fixing Third Division football matches, with the aim of defrauding gaming operators. The 'Monybet operation' has allowed four people to be arrested, the two leaders of the network and two players, specifically the goalkeeper and a defender of a football club.

There are also 34 investigated, of which six are active professional players in the Third Division and the rest are people who provided their identity to act as money mules.

During the searches carried out, 16,695 euros in cash, several cryptocurrency accounts, documentation related to bets and a large amount of mobile telephony and storage computer material have been located.

According to the Civil Guard, the organization was able to obtain benefits in prizes of more than one million euros and it is estimated that there are more than 30,000 people affected by bets made in good faith.

The operation began in February of last year when the Civil Guard learned, through the Board of Directors of the Conil de la Frontera football team, that his team, which was playing to enter the promotion phase, had played a end of season inconsistent with what was done during the first phase of the season. The board had observed that some players were not acting with the professionalism that the matches required, suspecting that they were involved with sports betting.

The first investigations focused on the request for data from the General Directorate of Gaming, the body in charge of controlling all sports bets made in the national territory, of the data of all bets made to Conil CF. during the 2021-2022 season, as well as the bettors, with which he obtained a list of more than 100,000 bets placed.

increased bets

Investigators were struck by the “disproportionate increase” in bets placed on this team's matches during the second phase of the season.. While the bets placed on other teams were between 1 and 50 euros, those placed on Conil CF. They exceeded, in most cases, 300 euros.

To try to hide their activities, they camouflaged the “juicy” bets among other predictable and risk-free bets for First Division matches, in order not to arouse the suspicions of the bookmakers and that they proceed to block the account.

Another method was the use of so-called money “mules”, that is, people who lent their identity as bettors so that the organization could multiply its profits, sometimes in exchange for a percentage of the profits and other times in exchange for privileged information. to place your own bets.

With all this information and after viewing the suspicious matches, unusual errors could be observed in professional players of the Third Division, especially in the goals conceded against Conil CF. After taking statements made to the team's squad, it was found that all suspicions pointed to the goalkeeper and a defender, although it is not ruled out that two other players may also be related.

The leaders of the organization that carried out the fraudulent bets were linked to the world of professional football, since they carried out the work of sports forecasting advisers, known as “tipsters”.. These people were a former player from another team from Cádiz and a soccer coach and, according to the Civil Guard, they had “bought” the goalkeeper and a defender from the Conileño team, who received great benefits for their actions or inactions.

The operation has been coordinated by the Civil Guard in Cádiz and the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor of the Provincial Court of Cádiz, coordinated by the Court number 3 of Chiclana de la Frontera.

Experimental RNA Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Pancreatic Cancer

Early results from a clinical trial involving 16 volunteers showed that an experimental, personalized mRNA vaccine induces a substantial immune response and potentially delays relapse in patients with a form of pancreatic cancer, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

It does this when used with other treatments, such as chemotherapy, surgery, and a type of immunotherapy.. The results of the phase 1 clinical trial are published in the journal Nature, in an article led by researchers from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (United States).

“Pancreatic cancer has a high mortality, but advances in surgery and treatment allow long survivors”

The study shows that personalized mRNA vaccines “show promise” in pancreatic cancer, Nature notes.

Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Has Low Survival Rates. A combination of surgical and medical therapies can delay recurrence, but their success rates are low, the journal recalls.

Recent literature suggests that most of these cancers harbor elevated levels of neoantigens, which are cell surface proteins that can arise on the surface of tumors following certain types of DNA mutations.

These proteins may be the target of personalized vaccine therapies in order to enhance T cell activity and improve outcomes.

As the authors summarize in their article: pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma is lethal in 88% of patients, yet it harbors mutation-derived T-cell neoantigens that are suitable for vaccines.

In this phase 1 clinical trial, Vinod Balachandran and his team administered a personalized mRNA vaccine in combination with chemotherapy and immunotherapy to 16 patients.. The vaccine was prepared according to the characteristics of the tumor of each patient.

They observed substantial T-cell responses in 50% of them, “indicating that the vaccine may induce an enhanced immune response.”

At 18-month follow-up, patients with vaccine-expanded T cells had a longer median recurrence-free survival compared with patients without vaccine-expanded T cells (13.4 months).

These results demonstrate the potential of individualized messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines in the treatment of this pancreatic cancer, in addition to providing evidence of their overall efficacy as a therapeutic tool in the treatment of the disease.

This type of mRNA vaccine put a stop to covid-19, a technology that, however, was initially conceived to try to develop vaccines against cancer.

This is a fertile field of research thanks to better knowledge of the immune system and technical developments.

The authors note that despite the limited sample size, these early results suggest that larger studies of this type of preparation are warranted.

For Manel Juan, head of the Immunology Service at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, “the study is very well designed and its scientific quality is unquestionable.”

“It demonstrates something that has been suggested many times before (with less robust data), which is that personalized vaccination with mRNA of tumor antigens is effective in inducing a response and that it can, at the very least, increase survival times,” according to this researcher, who did not participate in the work.

This study confirms that it can generate responses with clearly very reduced adverse effects against one of the tumors with the highest mortality, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, tells Science Media Center Spain.

“The work fits perfectly with the increasing number of papers showing evidence of these treatments.. The main contribution is that it achieves this in a tumor generally considered not very reactive to immunotherapy and reconfirms to all of us who consider that immunotherapy is a general proposal that depends more on the person's immune status than on the specific type of tumor”.
