A pilot dies in an accident at a rally in Azpeitia
A driver who participated in the Azpeitia Rallysprint (Guipúzcoa) died this Saturday in an accident during the test, while the co-driver of the vehicle was injured and was transferred to a hospital, the Basque Security Department informed the agency EFE.
The accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on the GI-2634 highway for reasons that are being investigated. The deceased was the pilot of one of the vehicles, a BMW E36, who participated in the test and which burned after the accident, reported the firefighters, who continue to work at the scene.
Sources from the organization told the newspaper Noticias de Guipúzkoa that the vehicle “went off the track and collided with one of those stone guardrails, the old. The place is almost a straight. The blow was strong, the engine moved and the car immediately began to burn. Luckily the stewards were able to get the co-driver out in time while the car was on fire.”
The same sources described the commissioners as “heroes”, because “if they had not taken him out we would be talking about two dead. The pilot was trapped inside and it was impossible to do anything for him.”
The accident occurred in the first of the three sleeves of the competition, at the height of Bentaberri. The co-pilot was evacuated to the Donostia de San Sebastián Hospital.
