A Swedish tennis player smashes a racket against the referee's chair and is sent off at the ATP tournament in Lyon
It's a rare bird on a tennis court. Not breaking a racket, which we have seen many players like John McEnroe or, more recently, Nick Kyrgios. But to do it against the chair of the match referee.
Mikael Ymer, Swedish player number 53 in the world, played against French Arthur Fils in the second round at the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon. When they were 5-5 in the first set, there was a disagreement between Ymer and the chair umpire Rogerio Santos.
Apparently, a blow from Fils, when they played a 40 equal, had not entered the court according to the Nordic tennis player. The Swede returned the ball and his response was called out. So, the judge gave the point for the Frenchman.
Ymer, angry, approached to claim the point asking the chair umpire to get off to confirm that the Frenchman's ball had bounced on the line, which the referee refused despite the strong protests of the Swede.
So, at the next point, with an advantage for the French player, the Swede lost the game and also his nerves. He approached the judge's chair and, after two hard blows, left his racket in a mess of strings and fiber.
Shortly after, a tournament representative approached Mikael Ymer's chair to tell him that he was disqualified.. Fils, number 117 in the world, passes the round in one of the strangest situations in tennis history.
