Diego Rubio retires from cycling after not recovering from the "botched" operation on his left arm
“The time has come to say goodbye. My career as a professional cyclist ended. It has not been the way I would have liked.. It has been a luxury to fulfill the dream of a child who used to ride a bike in his town and has been able to run some of the best races in the world”. This is an excerpt from the statement that Diego Rubio has published on his social networks to announce his forced farewell to cycling. A goodbye caused by medical malpractice.
The cyclist from Avila (32 years old) has not recovered from a “disastrous” surgical intervention that was performed on him in Tallinn (Estonia) in May 2022 after a fall suffered in the Tour of Estonia in which he fractured the ulna and radius of his arm left. “They told me to spend 15 days without moving the wrist and that in two months I would be recovered, but after returning to Spain I was examined by several doctors, who discovered that the plates were placed where they shouldn't, that there was a lack of bone mass and that the wrist had a deviation of 40º”, denounced the broker in an interview with ELMUNDO last February.
Since then, Rubio has undergone a long rehabilitation process controlled by medical specialists, but he has not been able to recover full mobility in his arm, which not only prevents him from cycling, but also from doing any of his daily activities.. “It was a botched operation…. I thought about suing the doctor and asking for damages, but the lawyers took the idea away from me because I was going to lose time and money,” explained the runner born in Navaluenga in the aforementioned report in this newspaper.
After the operation, Burgos BH did not renew his contract and he was left without a team. Diego Rubio intends to continue linked to cycling. In recent months, the title of level 3 sports director was obtained.
