Rain, rain and more rain. Since last week, Cyclone Minerva has hit central Italy, where the overflow of several rivers has caused three deaths, caused material damage and forced the evacuation of populations. In this scenario, the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the sixth round of the Formula 1 World Cup, which was to be held on Sunday at the Imola circuit, has been cancelled.
This Tuesday the overflow of the Santerno River surrounded the sports facilities with water, flooding several sections of roads near the track, in addition to the parking lot and some grassy hills on which the stands for the public are installed.
The water, on the other hand, did not reach the circuit although the personnel who worked finalizing the preparations before the great sporting event were evacuated. The boxes, commercial premises and the press room were also evicted.
Floods in Italy due to heavy torrential rains
The decision was adopted this Wednesday after the talks between all the parties involved and after the Vice President of the Italian Government and Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, considered that given the situation generated it was “opportune to postpone the Grand Prix” to focus attention in rescue efforts.
This Wednesday the red alert is still active in a large part of Emilia Romagna and rain is expected both on Friday and Saturday, when free practice and qualifying were to take place.
