Spain destroys Germany and gets into the fight for the medals
With a very serious match, especially in destructive tasks, Spain overcame Germany and won a victory (67-42) that allows them to ensure both the fight for the medals in the Eurobasket and their presence in the Pre-Olympic. Laura Gil, excellent in attack and defense, Maite Cazorla, Queralt Casas and Laura Quevedo, lethal in three-pointers, were key to a team that fully justified their previous status as favourites.
Spain started like a gale: intense in defense and relentless in attack. Two facets in which Gil shone, well supported by Cazorla. Miguel Méndez's team suffocated the ball out of a German team that could only score a shot from the field until their last attack of the first quarter. From there to the break, the distance only grew. The most intoned in scoring, before the break, was Casas, with six points.
After the break, Spain jumped onto the floor ready to leave everything sentenced. With a 14-2 run, in which the contributions of Cazorla and Gil stood out above all, he had a maximum advantage of 29 points (47-18). Enough, that is, for, taking advantage of the downturn in his rival's accuracy, to reach the last period just a little less far (53-29).
The distance, more than comfortable, made the Spanish relax perhaps one iota defensively in the last quarter. And, of course, although they may have slowed down a bit in attack as well, they managed to have a tremendously comfortable ending.. On Saturday awaits the semifinal against Hungary, who rallied from 17 points to beat the Czech Republic by a minimum (62-61).
