Valencia condemns the unfortunate Espanyol to Segunda in a dramatic ending; Real Sociedad will play the Champions League and Betis the Europa League
The unfortunate Espanyol could not circumvent his destiny. Three years after their last fall into hell, the blue and white team will play in the Second Division again after being unable to overcome the Mestalla trap. This is the sixth relegation in its history in a season in which coach Luis García tried to correct the drift on the bench of the fired Diego Martínez. It was of no use to overcome the momentary advantage of Valencia after the goal of the young Diego López. Between César Montes and Braithwaite they lifted the duel, and the referee even annulled the Mexican central defender at 1-3 after appreciating an alleged foul on goalkeeper Mamardashvili. Already in added time, in minute 93, and after taking advantage of a counterattack, Lino scored the final tie (2-2). And that was nothing more than the last shovelful for an Espanyol team that has just challenged its draw against Atlético due to a ghost goal awarded to Griezmann, and whose future is most uncertain under the ownership of the Chinese toy businessman Chen Yansheng.
The Salvation
Espanyol will accompany Elche in the Second Division, and up to six teams will play for the last place in relegation next week on the last day of the championship. Cádiz, Getafe, Valencia, Almería, Celta and Valladolid are separated by two points, with the Blanquivioletas starting as third from last and being the only ones with 39 points.
Valladolid could get little out of Almería this Sunday (0-0), where Rubi's men enjoyed the best options but did not achieve the victory that would have finally brought them out of the fire. The Valladolid will have to fight for salvation in their last home game against Getafe, with two more points. A less hostile terrain should be found in Almería, which goes to a Cornellà in mourning.
Cádiz, meanwhile, ended up putting Carlos Carvalhal's Celta (1-0) in tremendous trouble, who was still able to save himself from a win. It was enough with a great goal by Rubén Sobrino after the VAR had previously corrected the referee De Burgos Bengoetxea a penalty to Bongonda and a goal to Choco Lozano for offside by Iza. The people from Vigo will have to sigh because Barcelona, injured Balde (between six and seven weeks out due to a mistimed kick from Amath) already wants to start the holidays in Balaídos. While Sergio González's men will visit the relegated, but no less dangerous, Elche at the Martínez Valero.
While one of Bordalás's soldiers, Jaime Mata, gave air to a Getafe in minute 90 that managed to come back from Osasuna (2-1) that promised them happy after taking advantage in the first breath thanks to Chimy Ávila. Latasa, by the way, scored his first goal and was able to pay homage to the injured Enes Ünal.
Spain Supercup
Atlético gave no room for more surprises, so, in addition to staying one point behind Real Madrid in the fight for second place, they finally knocked Real Sociedad out of the third place that comes from playing in the Spanish Super Cup. He won at the Metropolitano (2-1) thanks to goals from Griezmann and Nahuel Molina. Sorloth came too late to the heroic.
Champions
Although the defeat had no further consequences for Real Sociedad, which made sure to play the next Champions League after Villarreal's defeat in Vallecas (2-1). Quique Setién's team, surpassed by goals from Raúl de Tomás and Isi Palazón, and who only found answers in a goal at the last minute from Lo Celso, will close the championship fifth, with a place in the Europa League.
europa league
Pellegrini's Betis came back in Montilivi (1-2) because Borjas Iglesias decided, with a brace, to break weeks of Verdiblanca indifference. Betis will play the Europa League thanks to a second half in which they managed to corrupt the attempts of Míchel's team, which had advanced in the first act thanks to a goal from Miguel Gutiérrez.
Conference League
Much more problematic is the fight to reach the seventh final place, a place that grants a place in the Conference League. The place is occupied for now by Osasuna, tied at 50 points with an Athletic booed in San Mamés after being defeated at sunset by relegated Elche thanks to a goal by Lucas Boyé (0-1). Girona, Rayo and Sevilla remain with 49, still with mathematical options.
Girona will play in Pamplona against Osasuna both willing to play the last bullet. Rayo, meanwhile, visit in Son Moix a Mallorca that did nothing against Barcelona (3-0, with a double by Ansu and one more by Gavi) to spoil the farewell party of both the old Camp Nou after 66 years of life, as well as two of its captains, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
Sevilla, with minimal options but still alive in the battle, will play in Anoeta against a Real Sociedad with all the work already done.
