Wyndham Clark surprises all the greats and wins the US Open
About 15 meters separated Wyndham Clark from glory. He only needed two putts from the beginning of the green to become the new major winner, to conquer the US Open of golf. Clark looked at the sky before kicking for the encouragement of his mother who died of cancer, when Wyndham was still at the university “he accompanied me all the way”, he would confess minutes later.
The 29-year-old American's best major finish so far was a 75th place finish at the 2021 PGA Championship.. A couple of months ago he achieved his first victory on the PGA Tour on the demanding Quail Hollow course. Wydham made the two putts, withstood the pressure as he has done since the first day, and looked at the sky again, already excited and as the winner of the Us Open.
It was not the day of Rickie Fowler, the always emotional favorite of the public. Three bogeys in his first seven holes soon took him out of the fight, nor was number one Scottie Scheffler's, the return of par was not enough and he had to settle for third position. The one who did fight until the end was Rory McIlroy, but another pair card for the Northern Irishman and like The Open last year, he finished second.
The Cinderella of the tournament passed over everyone at the Los Angeles Country Club, one of the most exclusive courses in the world located in the heart of Hollywood. Access to this Los Angeles club, which costs a quarter of a million dollars, is not just a matter of money, they do not admit actors or celebrities from the movie mecca; “We prefer those who hire them”, they say proudly from the club. The most tense moment of the day came for Clark with the bogeys on holes 15 and 16. The par that he saved at minute 17 was key and masterful, with a chip brimming with confidence.
Great reaction from Jon Rahm
In the end, 18 players managed to finish under par on the field, among them the best Spaniard, Jon Rahm, who managed to sign the second best round of this last day with 65 strokes. His final five under par left him with a cumulative of -3 and a very solid game thanks to which he achieved a new top-ten in majors. The Barrika player finished 10th. This is the lowest result that Jon Rahm has achieved in a Us Open, although it must be taken into account that the playing conditions this year have been much more affordable than in other editions. Sergio García finished in 27th place with a final round of 71 shots and David Puig's 67 shots must be highlighted, which in his debut in the majors places him in the top 40 of the O tournament.
