New drop in gasoline at the pump: diesel has already plummeted for eight weeks and is already 16% cheaper than a year ago
The collapse of the price of gasoline at the pumps does not seem to have a bottom. Gasoline already costs an average of 1,599 euros per liter and diesel, 1,433 euros, after a respective fall in the last week of 2.6% and 4.2% respectively, according to the European Union (EU) Oil Bulletin published this Thursday with data collected in more than 11,400 service stations in Spain between May 2 and May 8.
Gasoline thus chains its third consecutive decline and stands at levels of January 2, the last week in which the 20-cent reduction approved by the Government was in force when the war in Ukraine broke out and fuel prices skyrocketed. ; Diesel did not reach such a low value since the same month of 2022, now almost a year and a half ago, after eight weeks down.
The reductions come hand in hand with a drop in the markets for the price of a barrel of Brent oil, which has also fallen in recent weeks: this Wednesday it closed on the London futures market at $76.38, 1.34% less than at the end of the previous session, due to the prospect of further rises in interest rates, according to analysts.
Compared to a year ago, when the discount was in effect, gasoline now costs 2.5% less and diesel 16.25% less; while if compared to the beginning of 2023, gasoline is worth 15.6% more and diesel, 1.9% less. At current prices, filling a 55-liter tank with gasoline costs 87.95 euros and doing it with diesel costs 78.82 euros, which represents a drop compared to a year ago of more than 4 euros in the case of the first fuel. and 15 euros in the second.
