Ouigo celebrates two years in Spain with almost six million passengers transported at its high speed
Ouigo has already transported almost 6 million passengers during its first two years of activity in Spain, since in May 2021 it became the first operator to rival Renfe under a competition regime.
The company, a subsidiary of the French public railway company SNCF, began its service two years ago with the opening of the Madrid-Zaragoza-Tarragona-Barcelona line with five daily frequencies (10 journeys), one day after the state of alarm was lifted by the coronavirus.
“In these two years, we have given the opportunity to families, couples, friends and workers to travel in a high-speed service that they could not enjoy before due to the high prices. They are a reflection of how liberalization and modal change from more polluting means to train can become a common and long-term bet if you make it easy for the traveler”, said the commercial and marketing director of Ouigo, Federico Pareja.
The company recently inaugurated the Madrid-Valencia lines, with three daily frequencies, and Madrid-Albacete-Alicante, with two daily frequencies, with which it hopes to continue consolidating in Spain.
Ouigo is currently focused on its next opening, the line that connects Madrid with Córdoba, Seville and Málaga. To do this, it works to adapt its trains, equipped with the ERTMS system, to the LZB system, the one installed on the high-speed tracks to Andalusia.
