A mother throws herself from a fifth floor in Avilés with her seven-year-old daughter in her arms

SPAIN

A 45-year-old woman has rushed with her seven-year-old daughter in her arms after jumping from the fifth floor of a building located on Avenida de Los Telares in Avilés. The fall, police sources inform EL MUNDO, “could have been partly cushioned by a vehicle that was parked on the street”. Sources close to the investigation have reported that the woman left a farewell note before rushing in with her daughter in her arms.

Mother and daughter have been transferred to the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA). The mother, the aforementioned sources report, has been admitted with serious injuries and “her condition is critical”. The girl, awaiting further medical assessment, has minor injuries and some fractures.

Subsequently, in another house in the same building, number 38 on Calle Los Telares, the mother of the woman who fell, and therefore the girl's grandmother, was found with self-inflicted injuries to her arms.. The maternal grandmother, who lives in the same portal, has tried to cut her veins and has been transferred to the San Agustín Hospital. The injuries, reports the National Police, are minor and his life is not in danger.

Hours before the event, at dawn, the girl's maternal grandfather and the father had “engaged in an incident with knives,” according to police sources.. The grandfather would have thus violated the restraining order that he has with respect to the parent, since the confrontation took place at the home of the father of the minor.

Both were injured and are in custody.. The grandfather was transferred to the Central University Hospital of Asturias, where he is in police custody.. The father, for his part, was referred to the San Agustín Hospital, where he was treated for the minor injuries he suffered and is also detained.

VioGen System

The woman who has plunged into the void was included in the Comprehensive Monitoring System in cases of Gender Violence, known as the VioGén System, until 2020, and between 2016 and 2018 a restraining order was in force, they have informed the Efe agency Government Delegation sources. The first reported complaint of gender-based violence dates from 2016, when the girl was a baby, but the woman left the VioGén system in 2020 as no new complaints were received after a while.

According to El Comercio, the 45-year-old woman, whose identity has not been revealed, had filed several complaints against her ex-partner for gender violence that the Justice had filed, returning the visitation regime to the parent. The National Police was not aware of any restraining order of the husband with respect to the mother.

According to what some workers who were in the street at the time of the events told El Comercio, the girl would have shouted “Mom!, don't shoot me”, before the woman presumably jumped with her into the void. According to witnesses, both fell and bounced on a car that was parked on the street.

The event, which took place at 10:20 a.m., is being investigated by agents of the scientific and judicial police. The mother was “very badly injured and the girl not so much”, have pointed out the witnesses, who tried to get closer to pick up the little girl, just as a Civil Guard patrol was passing through the place, which provided the first assistance until the arrival of the medical services.
