Alfonso Rueda, the triumph of normality of the biker baron who could handle all "the pressures"

SPAIN / By Carmen Gomaro

– Alfonso Rueda is known for his calm demeanor, regardless of political turmoil or media games.
– Despite facing negative information during the campaign, Rueda maintained his composure and remained steadfast as the PPdeG’s anchor of calmness.
– His team praised him for his unwavering calmness amidst pressure and messages of all kinds, both from within his party and externally.
– Rueda’s ability to avoid distractions and remain focused on his goals has been compared to Don Tancredo’s evasiveness of thieves.
– Born in Pontevedra in 1968, Rueda started as Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s loyal number two but gradually developed his own distinct profile, steering clear of controversies and understanding that his political success depended on the support of Galicians.
– Rueda’s strategy has been to build upon the existing momentum and leverage the strong “electoral machinery” of the PPdeG without making drastic changes.
– Although he initially had reservations about taking over as president of the Xunta de Galicia, his resounding victory in the polls has prompted expectations of him imprinting his own style and gradually implementing changes.
– On a personal level, Rueda is an avid biker and cyclist. He embraces Salvador Dalí’s philosophy of being modified by everything but remaining unchanged.
– This personal philosophy has become known as the “Rueda style,” which entails staying true to one’s pre-presidential behaviors and continuing to do what one did before holding office.
– Rueda played a key role in pushing Feijóo to focus on bullrings as a campaign stronghold, particularly in Pontevedra.
– In addition to his close friendship with Mariano Rajoy, Rueda shares a strong bond with the mayors he worked with during his tenure as a local secretary, especially José Manuel Cores Tourís of Cambados and César Mera of A Cañiza.
– Rueda honed his political skills at the local level, gaining experience as a Local Administration Official and secretary of Cervantes, as well as serving as the intervening secretary of the Commonwealth of A Paradanta.
– His first significant role in the regional administration was as the head of the cabinet of the Ministry of Justice, Interior, and Labor Relations. He later became the director-general of Local Administration of the Xunta de Galicia before being elected as the general secretary of the Popular Party of Galicia in 2006.
– Rueda entered the Galician Parliament in 2009 after running as a candidate for the province of Pontevedra in the regional elections. In the same year, he was appointed Minister of the Presidency, Public Administrations, and Justice.
– He continued his tenure in the regional government, renewing his position as the head of the same department and eventually being named regional vice president in 2012.
– On May 14, 2022, Rueda assumed office as the president of the Xunta de Galicia.
– Rueda’s extensive experience in the Xunta has given him a deep understanding of how the regional administration operates, making him an expert in public administration according to the PP. His knowledge of the workings of the Xunta is unparalleled.
– With another four years in office, Rueda has the opportunity to further specialize and deepen his understanding of regional governance.
