An Air Force plane flies from Djibouti to Sudan to evacuate the 80 trapped Spaniards
An Air and Space Army plane, the A400M, is currently flying from Djibouti to Sudan, where they hope to evacuate the 80 Spaniards trapped in the country after the combat between the army and paramilitary forces. The Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are working together on this task, and in the last few hours Margarita Robles has reinforced the Spanish crew waiting from Djibouti, in case ground support for the evacuation had to be made.
While the United States evacuated its citizens last night and closed the Embassy, France is in full operation this morning. One of its citizens has been injured in an attack against the convoy during the evacuation. Spain sent two A400M aircraft to Djibouti, 1,200 kilometers from Khartoum, on Friday to be prepared for the evacuation. One of them is the one who is now heading to the African country.
The UK Armed Forces have also completed “a complex and rapid” evacuation of British diplomats and their families from Sudan, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak reported on Sunday.
This Saturday, Minister Robles explained that two more planes had been sent to transport material and that two more planes, which would make a total of six, had taken off to evacuation zone 2.. Robles explained that “mobile vehicles have also been sent in case an evacuation by land is necessary, personnel from the Army and Special Operations”. El País reported yesterday that what has been sent are RG31 armored vehicles.
The minister also explained that “at the moment when the ceasefire is real, we will make that extraction”. That information is still valid today, as EL MUNDO has confirmed through diplomatic sources.
Of the people to be evacuated, around 20 Spaniards have not been able to reach the Embassy from the places where they are. However, Robles wanted to send a message of reassurance on Saturday, since they have located everyone and are in contact with them.
Sudan has been fighting for eight days between the Army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group. The confrontation arose over the reforms undertaken to form a new transitional government after the coup.
