Katia's crime: two Portuguese twins arrested, a well and 800 grams of marijuana

SPAIN / By Carmen Gomaro

As soon as she saw the behavior of Angelo and Luis, the two 46-year-old Portuguese twins that her friend had just put up at home, the woman packed her bags, collected her things and left after several months residing with her.. Until then, he had lived with Katia, 57, to help her with the organic garden that he had raised in the town of Reliegos and from which he lived.

Katia was given to welcoming volunteers and pilgrims seasonally and she did so with the twins a month and a half ago when they arrived in the small municipality in the province of León where she settled five years ago after leaving the capital.. However, her friend did not like the two men and left immediately, as EL MUNDO has learned from sources close to the investigation.. There was something in his behavior that made her suspicious.. Katia, on the contrary, did not appreciate it at first and continued to allow them to live in her house.

Last Sunday, the woman appeared dead with obvious signs of violence inside the well of her farm. Last Monday, the Civil Guard detained the twin brothers more than 20 kilometers from there, posing as pilgrims completing the Camino de Santiago. The main hypothesis with which the researchers work is that of theft; that Katia surprised them and stood up to them or that they would get upset because she asked them to leave her house. However, they keep open all the others except the one of a sexual nature.

Investigators have found 800 grams of marijuana in the car that the woman had rented after the van with which she moved broke down, detail the same sources consulted.

They consider theft as one of the main hypotheses

At the beginning of June, Angelo and Luis arrived in the village from Portugal.. They were looking to spend a season there and Katia offered them her home. He did it quite regularly and thus obtained help in his small business. After a while, Katia asked them to leave because the coexistence began to go wrong, the same sources clarify. But the two brothers refused to leave. They put up great resistance.

Thus began a tense relationship of which the woman did not report to the Civil Guard because she did not consider it necessary.. In addition to her organic farming business, Katia also worked in a bar in Mansilla de las Mulas, a nearby municipality, cleaning by the hour to earn an extra salary.

It was precisely the fact that he did not go to the establishment on Friday afternoon that raised the alarm about his disappearance.. That he did not show up and that he had not notified caused a deep surprise to the owner of the premises. The woman then called a friend of Katia's and they also went to the Civil Guard headquarters to report the disappearance.. The two men he had taken in were gone, making finding them a priority.. An extensive search device was then activated that ended on Sunday at Katia's house.

They investigate whether the men wanted to take away marijuana

It was a friend of the woman, the same sources reveal to this newspaper, who appreciated that something was not going well. He knew the plot perfectly and the layout of all the elements, so it didn't take long for him to notice that the cover of the well had been moved and that it had some stones placed incorrectly on top of it.. They withdrew them and when they looked at the bottom, they found Katia. They immediately notified the Civil Guard, who dispatched members of the Special Group for Underwater Activities (Geas), who recovered Katia's lifeless body.. The search for the suspected twins was then activated.

Less than 24 hours later, the search device gave results and the agents located them in the town of San Justo de la Vega, near the bridge over the Tuerto river, a regular route for people on pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.. The two men were arrested and yesterday morning the investigators of the León Command Judicial Police took them to Katia's home to carry out a reconstruction of the events separately.. The brothers will go to court in the next few hours, indicate the same sources.

Katia ran La Huertina de Reliegos as an organic farming space whose products she sometimes sold in the Ecological Market of the Palacio del Conde Luna in the capital. In 2018, she was the winner of the Tomate de Plata award at the fair that Mansilla de las Mulas dedicates to this product and was the protagonist on local television.
