Metro de Madrid will cut line 12 —which connects the southern cities of the community— for five months in mid-2024. The reason is the extension of line 3 to El Casar, west of the municipality of Getafe. However, the cut will include only three stations: Juan de la Cierva, El Casar and Los Espartares, as it appears in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid (Bocam) and as confirmed by the Ministry of Transport. These will remain disabled until the expansion work is completed at the end of that year..
In fact, the closure as such has not been published, but rather the replacement transport contract for this section. It will be an alternative bus service to cover the three mentioned stations. It is estimated that it will operate for 153 days and the bidding budget for the project amounts to 649,000 euros..
Once the works are finished, MetroSur will gain its second connection with the capital's metro network. At the moment, there is only one transfer at the Joaquín Vilumbrales station, which allows travelers to take line 10 in the direction of Madrid. When the extension of L3 is finished, the El Casar station will also have a connection with the yellow line, which communicates directly with Puerta del Sol.
The Community of Madrid calculates that the expansion of the line will affect more than one million users. In total, more than two and a half kilometers of network will be expanded and the total execution period will exceed two years. The Ministry anticipates that some 9,200 travelers will make use of this new network. The expansion is part of the Central Government's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan through the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.
Currently, MetroSur is the main means of communication for residents to the south. Although the suburban network connects the municipalities with the capital, the metro is the fastest option to travel between Getafe, Fuenlabrada, Móstoles, Leganés and Alcorcón.
