Procedures begin to build a temporary waste warehouse in Vandellós II

SPAIN / By Cruz Ramiro

The Ministry of Ecological Transition has submitted to public information the project for the construction of an Individualized Temporary Warehouse (ATI) at the Vandellós II Nuclear Power Plant to store the waste generated by the plant's activity, as published today by the BOE.

According to the capacity of the current spent fuel pool at the Tarragona plant, it will be full at the end of cycle 28, in April 2027, so they have to build another storage facility that prevents saturation and ensures the continuity of the central.

The Ascó-Vandellós II Nuclear Association (ANAV) has initiated these procedures to assess the environmental impact of the construction project of this ATI.

The Congress of Deputies voted, in 2004, to build a Centralized Temporary Warehouse in Villar de Cañas (Cuenca) for the waste generated by the seven Spanish nuclear power plants, but this solution has finally been ruled out and they will build an ATI for each reactor, and later they will have to move the waste to a deep geological storage in 2073.
