Revilla will allow the investiture of the PP in Cantabria without having to agree with Vox

SPAIN

The still president of Cantabria and leader of the PRC, Miguel Ángel Revilla, has assured this Tuesday that he will allow the PP candidate, María José Sáenz de Buruaga, to be sworn in despite not having reached an absolute majority. The popular, therefore, would not have the obligation to agree with Vox to achieve the presidency, and the door is open to a possible government alone.

“I am not a scavenger, I will not hinder someone who has had such a spectacular result,” said the Cantabrian president during an interview on Antena 3, who assures that his movement seeks that the region “does not become contaminated with Vox.”

Revilla already recognized his clear defeat during the electoral night of 28-M, for which he blamed the national pacts of Pedro Sánchez. The PP won 15 seats, 8 for the PRC, 8 for the PSOE and 4 for Vox. Neither Podemos nor Ciudadanos achieved representation. The absolute majority in Cantabria stands at 18 seats.

The PRC could have forced a PP pact with Vox by voting against Buruaga's investiture, by adding 16 votes with the PSOE against 15 for the PP. According to the regulations of the Cantabrian Parliament, the candidate who opts for the presidency must obtain an absolute majority in the first vote, or a simple majority in the second. With one abstention, the PRC would already allow Sáenz de Buruaga to achieve the investiture.

In the last few hours, important mayors from his own party had called on Miguel Ángel Revilla to take that step. The councilor of Reocín and president of the Federation of Municipalities of Cantabria, Pablo Diestro, assured in statements to Europa Press that he had “spoken with many colleagues” who asked to “burn all the bullets” to try to reach an agreement with the PP.

Revilla was already vice president in Partido Popular governments in the 1990s, but has governed in coalition with the PSOE in recent years. During the campaign, the attacks between the PP and Revilla were constant and cast doubt on the option of an understanding after 28-M.
