Riot of Dominican prisoners in the Valdemoro prison for drug control

SPAIN / By Carmen Gomaro

Three Dominican prisoners from the Valdemoro prison rioted last Thursday at noon over the control of narcotic substances in the prison and dragged the rest of the inmates of module 9, the most conflictive in the prison, into the protest.. With this action they also demanded the transfer of their compatriots to the paid and most attractive destinations within their module, according to the complaint from the CSIF union. The inmates refused to pass the dining room, to eat and to go up to the cells for two hours. He wanted to put pressure on the officials and the management to gather all the Dominican prisoners in the same space. Finally, the three leaders, between 35 and 45 years old and in prison for drug trafficking, were reduced and transferred to the isolation department.

The events occurred around 1:00 p.m. before the distribution of food in module number 9 of the prison. At that time, there was a plant organized and carried out by Dominican inmates. Due to their power, hierarchy and entity, together with the fear that the other prisoners have of these inmates, the rest of the inmates joined this module, said Sergio García Delegado, delegate of CSIF Prisons in Valdemoro. “They want drug control within the module and destinations within it, especially in the dining room, which is one of the best places in the prison, being paid and handling more food than the rest of the prisoners in the module” , explains Garcia Delgado.

For quite some time the voltage in the module was increasing. “Service officers opposed the demands of the inmates and the first sparks flew,” according to CSIF. “All the prisoners in module 9 resisted going up to the cells at 2:00 p.m., which is the general rise due to the rules of the internal regime, they refused to enter the dining room and they did not eat the ration either,” according to CSIF.

Faced with this serious situation, all the officials came. After hours of negotiations, the workers were able to redirect the behavior of the Dominican prisoners. The leaders were transferred to the isolation module and are waiting to be taken to other centers to prevent them from becoming stronger, says García Delegado.

From CSIF Valdemoro they demand more means, security, training, resources, the consideration of an agent of the authority for the officials and a fair salary equalization with the civil servants of Catalonia, who earn 500 euros more per month for the same work as the rest of the employees prison publics.
