The European Commission "categorically" denies that Von der Leyen criticized Feijóo after a meeting

SPAIN / By Cruz Ramiro

The publication of an opinion article in El País that ensures that the president of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, criticized Feijóo with his team has raised a significant amount of dust in said body. Dana Spinant, one of the two main spokespersons for the European Commission, published a message on social networks on Tuesday stating that the Community Executive was never asked for a reaction on said information.. “We categorically deny any statement attributed to President von der Leyen in this article,” Spinant wrote.. But the European Commission has come out to deny these facts, with the consequent reaction from senior management in Genoa. The popular charges directly against the PSOE, which they accuse of spreading the “hoax” of the alleged criticism of the president of the Commission against the leader of the PP. One of them has been the president of the Senate, Ander Gil, who compared the information with the good treatment between Von der Leyen and Sánchez in the middle of the campaign. “You choose”, added the socialist.

“Either rectify immediately, or it should be terminated in a sudden way. The fourth authority of the State cannot lie like this. Respect the position you hold a little,” wrote the PP spokesman in the Senate, Javier Maroto, for example.. Other leaders from Genoa joined the criticism, such as Esteban González Pons or Dolors Montserrat. “The president of the Senate, like so many other PSOE officials, have lied (…). They are desperate and nervous, but not everything goes”, pointed out the MEP.

It is not usual for the European Commission to “categorically” deny information. He tends to always be tactful, avoiding replying to the numerous pieces of information that are linked to the Community Executive every day.. The Commission avoids as much as possible any position that could be interpreted as interfering in the democratic processes of the Member States, but the pressure had increased in the last hours after the publication of the article, for precisely the same reason: because they were attributed to Von der Read some words that could be interpreted as taking sides.

The meeting between Feijóo and Von der Leyen took place last March. It was an important meeting between both leaders. On the one hand, because the popular knows that the German is one of the most powerful people within the so-called “Brussels bubble”. On the other, because Von der Leyen knows that if she wants to be president of the Community Executive again in the next European legislature and there is a change of government in Spain, she will need the support of Feijóo at the European Council in July 2024.

The two are interested in having a cordial relationship even if they do not have, at least at the moment, very close ties Feijóo is, through Esteban González Pons, close to Manfred Weber, president of the European People's Party (EPP), who although he shares Political family with Von der Leyen maintains a very tense relationship with the president of the European Commission.
