The Government expects institutional loyalty from the PP so that the Spanish presidency of the EU develops normally after 23-J
About 20 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, at the Mimi Castle in Bulboaca (Moldova), the Summit of the European Political Community is held in which 47 top leaders of Europe meet. “An appointment that represents a display of unity of Europe with Ukraine against Russia. We do not falter,” diplomatic sources say. An appointment in which the general elections in Spain have had a leading role. From the Government they trust that after the elections, and if there is a change in the Presidency of the Government, there will be institutional loyalty from the PP so that it develops normally, and that everything goes according to plan.
In Moldova, a country that European leaders want to embrace, the situation in Spain, which assumes the rotating presidency of the EU on July 1, has also been present. In the Government they are sure that it is a matter of the country and that everything will develop normally, state government sources. They point out that the big issues on the European agenda and the priorities are what they are, which is why they are convinced that even after 23-J there is a change of power, and Alberto Núñez Feijóo takes over, the machinery is well-oiled.
Of course, in the Government they want to believe in this institutional loyalty although they emphasize that it is something that, they argue, the popular ones have not practiced in Brussels. Government sources say that it is something that has happened in the Casado era and also with Feijóo, from the distribution of European funds to criticism of the pension reform of the current president of the PP, agreed with the European Commission and the unions.
And it is that the electoral advance in Spain has been one of the issues for which different European leaders have been asked. During the family photo of the leaders, Pedro Sánchez spoke briefly and informally, and in a relaxed way, with other leaders. Of course, the President of the Government has been one of the few leaders who has not stopped to speak to the press upon his arrival at Mimi Castle, despite attempts to ask him how he is facing the general elections and if he brings a message of peace of mind to its European partners about the elections.

But other leaders have responded about the holding of the elections in Spain, downplaying the fact that the general elections are held in the midst of the Spanish presidency of the EU. “I am confident that the elections will not have an impact on the Spanish presidency. We know what the agenda is, so I am absolutely sure that it will be a fruitful presidency.. In Spain, people want a strong EU,” said the President of the European Council, Charles Michel.
For the High Representative for Foreign Policy of the EU, Josep Borrell, there is “nothing extraordinary” in that there are elections during that Spanish mandate. In fact, from the Spanish Government they remember that when the current presidency fell to France the last time, up to three electoral appointments were held. “I think that the electoral campaign can be carried out without prejudice to the presidency,” added Borrell.
“It is important that we are all together and I am glad to meet my friends, especially, obviously also Pedro Sánchez,” replied the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, when asked if he was concerned about the holding of the elections in Spain and the rise of the far right. Giorgia Meloni, Italian Prime Minister, has indicated that she preferred “not to interfere, I do not want to interfere”, but she has made it clear that “I am the president of the European conservatives and I am especially interested in knowing what they do”, she has stated in reference to vox. Scholz supporting Sánchez and Meloni supporting Abascal.
From the Spanish Government they indicate that the electoral call of July 23 will not alter the presence of Pedro Sánchez in major European events there will be during the electoral campaign, such as the NATO summit in Lithuania (July 11 and 12); an appearance before the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on July 13, or the celebration in Brussels of the EU-CELAC Summit of Heads of State and Government (July 17 and 18). From the Executive they remember the spirit and the European commitment of Sánchez.
