The PP sees a Feijóo government almost impossible after the resounding "no" of the PNV, but tries to avoid "Arrimadas' mistake"
The entire PP knows that Feijóo has hardly any chance of success in his attempt to build a sufficient majority to govern. It is, rather, an attempt to take the initiative and see how events unfold, but today there is not a sufficient majority in favor of it.. The absolute majority is 176 seats and the right can add 170 or 171 for now, with the PP's 136, Vox's 33 and UPN's, which yesterday gave the ok to Feijóo. The Canarian Coalition could also enter the fray, while the PNV rules out facilitating that investiture, because it accuses it of laundering Vox.
The territorial and national leaders of the party consulted give two types of answers when asked about the real options of the adventure that Feijóo has undertaken in search of the investiture. The first: “You have to try”. The second: “It is impossible”. And both are not exclusive.. The popular do not want to repeat the mistake of Inés Arrimadas, who did not appear for the investiture despite having been the most voted candidate in the 2017 Catalan elections. Afterwards, Ciudadanos deflated to its current state of an induced coma.
“When you are the favorite of the citizens, you have the obligation to attend to that support that they have given you,” Juanma Moreno, president of Andalusia, answered yesterday, when asked about this effect Arrimadas, upon his departure from the National Board of Directors (JDN) of the PP. “You have to try, you don't have to cross your arms”, they affected the environment of Isabel Díaz Ayuso. “Look if not at Inés Arrimadas, who has been blamed all this time,” they emphasized.
In Genoa they are aware that it is an operation doomed, in principle, to failure, but they add that nothing can be given 100% certainty. «It is very complicated, but we must try to the PP until the end. And also to the country, because the government that would come is worse than the one that is there, “they point out in the Feijóo team. By the latter, they mean that Sánchez should add an additional one to his current list of partners. And the most irredentist of all: Junts per Catalunya.
“There is an opportunity and we are going to explore it”, they insist on the national leadership of the PP. That is why Feijóo began the contacts yesterday to try to add enough support. He called UPN, the Canary Islands Coalition, PNV and Vox. “Since this morning [por ayer] I have maintained contacts with different political forces in order to achieve a stable government in Spain in the coming weeks,” he proclaimed in his speech before the JDN.
“The president of UPN (Javier Esparza) has confirmed his support for me in a hypothetical investiture,” Feijóo revealed yesterday before the party's senior staff. In the case of Coalición Canaria, in his call to Fernando Clavijo he has already “opened the way”. He also had “a first contact with the president of the PNV (Andoni Ortuzar, who categorically refused to negotiate)” and spoke with Santiago Abascal, leader of Vox, “to speak in the coming weeks and see if he is willing to make a change.”
In addition, on Sunday night there was a contact, at the initiative of Pedro Sánchez, with the PSOE. “We have agreed to talk” once the vote of residents abroad was known, said Feijóo. That is, from July 28. But the PP already discounts that the socialist leader will reject the government of the most voted candidate. “We will not be hostages to anyone's will. If Mr. Sánchez does not accept the dialogue with the PP, we will explore all the ways to achieve a government. I do it because the blockade is not good for Spain and it would not be acceptable that we are headed for an electoral repetition, ”the PP president justified before his own.
“The responsibility of my party is to try,” he concluded.
