IMED Hospitales celebrates International Nursing Day, which is commemorated on May 12, with the reflections of the three directors of their nursing teams at the IMED Levante, IMED Elche and IMED Valencia hospitals.
The professionals discuss current and future challenges facing their profession and how they pursue the goal of providing quality care to every patient and making a positive impact on all of society.. “The nurse's perspective is essential, it generates innovative responses, with a sustainable, effective approach and a highly humanized profile,” they state.
What are your fundamental tasks to prepare your work and lead the entire nursing team at IMED Levante?
Nursing management plays a fundamental role in medical care by being responsible for multiple key functions, among which are the coordination and supervision of nursing care, management of nursing personnel, leading the recruitment processes of new personnel and develop nursing policies and procedures to ensure the quality and safety of patient care throughout the hospital.
In short, their job is to plan, organize, direct and control human and material resources to effectively meet the objectives of the hospital.
Could you tell us about the importance of nurses in health management?
Our training, in which we acquire leadership and management skills from the degree, and all the knowledge achieved, enable us to have a global vision of people's needs.
A nurse manager, from its specificity, from the point of view of care practice, is a great contribution to the comprehensive management of health services.
The nurse's perspective is essential, it generates innovative responses, with a sustainable, effective approach and a highly humanized profile.
What are the challenges that nursing will face in the near future?
Over the years, nursing has faced various challenges and advances in the profession that position it today as the central axis of the health system.
The contribution of nursing to the health of the population is evident and the main challenge is to face the current shortage of nursing personnel, the most important challenge that must be addressed in the short and medium term.
On the other hand, keeping nursing updated in the use of technology, knowing demographic changes and lifestyles, and keeping their skills updated are also important challenges.
How does nursing contribute to disease prevention and health promotion, and why is this group so crucial for society?
The work of nurses in health promotion is of great importance, and is supported by international conferences such as Alma-Ata (1978) and Ottawa, Canada (1986).. The nurse plays an important role at all levels of care and is a strategic link to produce changes in people's lifestyles, promoting health and quality of life through self-care and the empowerment of the person and their family. .
The nurse has the task of explaining in different areas what certain diseases are and how to prevent them, not only the physical ones, but also the mental ones.. It is necessary to change the perception that the public has that the nurse only administers medication, and make them see that they are agents of change in health in different areas of life. Health promotion is more participatory and community, and this is where nursing intervenes, assessing the particularities of each individual and applying the most appropriate care according to the needs of each person.
Do you think that the work of your profession is valued by society to the extent that it deserves?
Nursing has a fundamental role in bringing about health-related changes in society, but society still does not fully understand the scope of its skills and knowledge.. It is necessary for the care model to evolve towards a model of interdisciplinary teams so that nursing actions are fully valued. Investment is needed to promote prevention and health promotion, and this requires more nursing staff in strategic locations.
In addition, within the nursing community, it is important to encourage collaboration and teamwork to change society's perception of this profession.. Each nurse must develop their skills and knowledge, not only for economic incentives, but also selflessly to achieve collective goals.
What is your vision of the role that nursing will have in the future?
I have always valued my profession and I try to transmit my values to the new generations of nursing, promoting decision-making, autonomy in care.
It is difficult to get where we want to go if our biomedical model does not let us move forward. And that is in the hands of health policy and in the background of ourselves, where we have to make ourselves noticed without stopping fighting and advancing, and being better every day, participating and collaborating in courses, in research, even together with the medical team making unity as an indispensable part in decision-making in the health of our patients without underestimating our opinion.
My vision, in short, is positive. We are a profession in constant dynamism and development, we should not stagnate. Even if we are in a “comfortable” position, we should always have concerns about advancing in our profession and fighting to be better and being in the decision-making process for our patients, innovating, suggesting, researching and who knows, putting our center in the best position. thanks to the work of nursing.
What are the essential skills and qualities that a nurse needs to carry out effective management?
The main quality that a nurse needs to achieve good management is to be a good leader. To do this, you must be able to work in a team, plan, organize and control human and material resources to meet objectives and achieve measurable and specific goals.. A good leader must also set an example for his team, carrying out joint tasks and earning the respect and trust of others.
Additionally, it is important for a nurse to have clear and effective communication skills, to share decision-making and convey information in an accurate and timely manner.. She must also be empathetic and understanding, showing a genuine interest in the needs of patients and her team.
