At least three people die and another 11,000 are isolated due to heavy rains in Chile
At least three people from the same family have died and 11,000 more have been isolated by the strong storm that has hit the Araucanía region, in south-central Chile, in recent hours.
A landslide surprised the victims in the Curarrehue commune at dawn and seriously affected two homes, according to the Chilean network Teletrece.
José Montalva, presidential delegate of the region, has reported that more than a hundred firefighters have been sent to the area. The Carabineros Special Police Operations Group and the Emergency Medical Care System (SAMU) are also present.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (SENAPRED) has estimated the number of people affected by this event at 238.. The intense rain has caused rivers to overflow in the region and SENAPRED has declared a red alert in several communes.
“Various mass removal events have been recorded affecting vehicular traffic routes, river overflows and street flooding situations,” SENAPRED reported, according to the TeleSur network.
