Eurotunnel reopens due to demobilization of French unions

INTERNATIONAL / By Luis Moreno

The railway tunnel under the English Channel, which has been closed this Thursday due to a strike in the French part of the facility, will reopen tonight due to the announcement of demobilization by the unions.

The representatives of the French workers, who with their strike had forced the closure of the terminals in France and the United Kingdom, did not give details of the negotiations that have led them to return to work.

The French unions had rejected the offer of a bonus of 1,000 euros for each worker and had demanded three times as much, according to management.

The infrastructure concessionaire company, Getlink, reported during the day the suspension of the service, while the French Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune, considered the blocking of the tunnel under the English Channel “unacceptable.”

The operator of the high-speed trains through the tunnel, Eurostar, warned passengers of the situation and recommended delaying their trips.

Around 400 trains pass through the Eurotunnel, whose entry into service will be 30 years old next May, both for passengers (the Eurostar high-speed axis between Paris-London-Amsterdam-Germany), and for the transport of vehicles and goods. .

During 2022, more than 10 million high-speed train passengers passed through the tunnel, another 8 million in their cars and a significant, but not detailed, number of trucks.
