The city's police prefect, Frédérique Camilleri, said this Friday on BFMTV television that everything indicates that it is a “settling of accounts” between drug trafficking gangs operating in Marseille.
Although it is already the 42nd that has occurred so far this year, more than in all of 2022, this time it has had more impact because it took place in district 4 of the city, a central neighborhood where it is not known that there is drug trafficking.
Camilleri acknowledged that in recent months violent acts linked to drug trafficking have increased in the city and linked it to the police fight against this scourge, which has increased significantly.
“The settlement of accounts knows no limits between drug trafficking gangs,” said the prefect, who reported that the police have put an end to numerous drug sales points in the city, which has accentuated the rivalry between the gangs.
“The work we carry out will take time, but we are going to face it resolutely, we want to show them that we are not going to stop,” said Camilleri, who pointed out that Marseille has seen its police forces reinforced significantly.
According to the prefect, in the last three years 400 police officers have arrived in France's second city and another 70 are expected in the coming months.
He stressed that their work is “bearing fruit, that murders are being avoided,” but that they need more time, while pointing out that police work has to be accompanied by other instruments, such as economic development, to “give another perspective to the Marseillais than drug trafficking”
