Father of deadly shooter of 8 people arrested in Serbia for possessing illegal weapons

The father of a young man who fatally shot eight people and wounded 14 others last week in Serbia was arrested on Wednesday for possessing a large quantity of illegal weapons at home, the Interior Ministry reported.. According to the statement, the 55-year-old man was arrested in cooperation with the prosecution and will undergo questioning.

During the search of his house and other properties in the vicinity of the town of Mladenovac, the area in which his son committed the crime some 60 kilometers south of Belgrade, a carbine with a scope, a pistol and hundreds of pieces of ammunition of different calibers.

His 21-year-old son was arrested Friday, hours after committing the crime.. This occurred less than 48 hours after a 13-year-old boy killed eight of his classmates and a security guard in a Belgrade school, injuring six students and a teacher.

The boy committed the crime with a pistol, owned by his father, who had a license for the weapon, and whom the minor used to accompany to shooting practice. Following the two tragic events, the Serbian government announced measures to limit the number of weapons in the hands of private individuals, increase controls and toughen punishments for the illegal possession of weapons and explosives.
