They fired Jesús Santrich, one of the best-known faces of the new FARC. The scoop, published by the Colombian digital page El Expediente and Semana magazine, indicates that he died in Venezuela at the hands of the National Guard for reasons that are still unknown.
“In alleged clashes that occurred in Venezuela, Santrich would have died,” wrote the Minister of Defense of the Duque Government, Diego Molano, an hour later.. He added that his death shows that the guerrillas take refuge in the Venezuelan sanctuary.
Seuxis Pausias Hernández, his real name, had created together with his friend and boss, Iván Márquez, and other guerrilla commanders, what they named Nueva Marquetalia, a criminal organization that once again took up arms to become a powerful cocaine cartel. The leadership of the band settled in Venezuela, protected by the Government of Nicolás Maduro, in the states of Zulia and Apure, bordering Colombia.
In Colombia, he earned the fury of his compatriots when, when asked by a journalist if the FARC would admit their crimes and tell the truth, he responded by singing: “Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps,” followed by a laugh.
Later, by virtue of the agreement with Juan Manuel Santos, he occupied one of the ten seats granted to the FARC, although he only got 50,000 votes throughout the country.
But the name of Santrich was well known outside of Colombia when he was arrested by the Attorney General's Office in April 2018, accused of trafficking cocaine despite the fact that his terrorist group had signed the peace process with the previous government and he was an elected congressman, although I had not taken possession. At that time, various political parties considered it an attack on peace.. A year later, in May 2019, when he was in prison awaiting extradition to the United States, the Supreme Court and the Special Justice for Peace forced him to be released against all the evidence.. They also had to pay him back wages owed to him as a congressman.
The paradox is that this month, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of sending him to North America for drug trafficking.
Santrich was a member of the FARC General Staff and one of the commanders of the Caribbean Bloc.
