Syria: No Surprise Elections Courtesy of the Asad Clan

Syria celebrates this Wednesday the second presidential elections in the middle of the war. Who will win? Nobody doubts it: Bashar Asad, president of Syria since the year 2000, when he took over from his father Hafez Asad, general leader of the corrective movement that rose to power with a coup in 1970. Bashar had not been the chosen one; it was the sudden death of Basel Asad, his brother, that gave command to the ophthalmologist who seized the reins by promising reforms and winning a heinous war.
