The UN Security Council postpones for the second consecutive day the vote on a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza
The United Nations Security Council has postponed the vote on the new resolution proposal, promoted by the United Arab Emirates, to call for an “urgent and sustainable” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip that allows the passage of humanitarian aid.
The organization already postponed the vote the day before until this Tuesday after the numerous reluctance shown by several of its members, mainly from the United States, which two weeks ago vetoed a resolution for a ceasefire in the Palestinian enclave.
The new text also specifically contemplates a mechanism for monitoring humanitarian shipments coordinated by the UN, with a view to alleviating the “serious impact” of a situation that is “rapidly deteriorating.”. Likewise, although it takes note of the reopening of the Kerem Shalom crossing, dependent on Israel, it advocates “expanding the delivery and distribution” of aid.
The Council countries also urge the parties to respect International Law, “firmly” condemning any possible violations, including indiscriminate attacks against civilians and the “forced displacement” of the Gazan population.. They also call for the “immediate and unconditional” release of all hostages held by Hamas.
In political terms, it raises the “unwavering commitment” to the two-state solution and advocates unifying the administrative control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under the leadership of the Palestinian Authority.
The representative of the United States, Robert Wood, called this Tuesday during the debate to “condemn” the attacks carried out by Hamas on October 7 and to guarantee that this group does not continue to control the Strip, in a speech in which he claimed the right of Israel to defend itself and the two-state solution.
For his part, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, Vasili Nebenzia, has asserted that only the authorities of Israel and the United States are opposed to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which also implies that “they oppose all the international community”.
Thus, the Russian representative has stressed that United States policy in the Middle East has reached “a dead end”, because instead of helping Palestinian civilians it is supplying weapons to Israel.. “Despite the efforts of the overwhelming majority of members of the Security Council, all proposed projects are blocked by Washington, which instead of providing assistance to civilians massively supplies Israel with all types of weapons,” he said.
