The Secretary of Justice of the United States, Merrick Garland, has announced this Friday the appointment of a special prosecutor for the investigation against Hunter Biden, the son of the president of the country, Joe Biden.
The one specifically chosen has been David Weiss, the Delaware federal prosecutor who has led the investigations carried out against the president's son up to now. This jurist will thus supervise the investigation and decide “where, when and if to file charges”, as explained by Garland, who has assured that this prosecutor “will not be subject to the daily supervision of any department official”.
This prosecutor was appointed in 2017 by former President Donald Trump and ratified by the Republican Senate a year later. With his election, Biden wants to clear up all doubts about any accusation of partisanship in favor of his son.
Hunter Biden pleaded guilty in June to a series of misdemeanors for irregularities on his income tax return, including non-payment of taxes.. However, the exact terms of his guilty plea were not settled because there is also an additional charge against him for possession of firearms, so for now he remains found not guilty.
In addition, the president's son faces a possible congressional investigation, led by the Republican Party, into what House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer describes as the “shady dealings” of the Biden family. .
