The Portuguese Navy deactivated an explosive device that could be “extremely dangerous” on the beaches of the Troia peninsula, some 135 kilometers from Lisbon, the institution reported on Saturday.
The Portuguese Navy acted this Friday after a citizen alert and found a device used to signal emergency zones at sea that was deactivated late at night.
“Due to the confluence of various maritime and air routes, this type of artifact is found with some frequency on the Portuguese coast and requires precautions when handling it because it can be extremely dangerous,” the agency added in a statement.
The area where it was found, on the Troia peninsula, is one of the most touristy on the Portuguese coast.
